Claims
- 1. A method for treating a patient suffering from neuropathic pain, comprising
administering to a patient in need of such treatment an effective amount of an agonist drug capable of binding to peripheral neuronal nicotinic receptors but which does not readily cross the blood-brain barrier.
- 2. The method for treating a patient suffering from neuropathic pain according to claim 1, wherein the drug provides the patient with relief from allodynia.
- 3. A method for treating a patient suffering from allodynia, comprising
administering to a patient in need of such treatment an effective amount of an agonist drug capable of binding to at least one peripheral neuronal nicotinic receptor but which does not readily cross the blood-brain barrier.
- 4. A method for treating a patient suffering from neuropathic pain, comprising
administering to a patient in need of such treatment an effective amount of a quaternary nicotinic compound.
- 5. A method for treating a patient suffering from neuropathic pain by effecting peripheral neuronal nicotinic receptors at the level of the dorsal root ganglia, comprising
administering to a patient in need of such treatment an effective amount of a nicotinic agonist compound that does not readily cross the blood-brain barrier.
- 6. A method for reducing side effects associated with agonist activation of central neuronal nicotinic receptors, comprising administering to a patient in need of such treatment an effective amount of a nicotinic agonist compound that does not readily cross the blood-brain barrier.
