Claims
- 1. A polymeric composition having enhanced resistance to water treeing and electrical treeing consisting essentially of a homogeneous mixture of a solid synthetic organic polymeric thermoplastic resin and a water treeing and an electrical treeing inhibitor consisting essentially of
- (1) a hydrocarboxyalkoxy silane having the formula: ##STR6## wherein R.sub.1, R.sub.2 and R.sub.3 are the same or different and are (OC.sub.n H.sub.2n).sub.y OR.sub.4, C.sub.1 to C.sub.8 alkyl, C.sub.1 to C.sub.8 alkoxy, C.sub.1 to C.sub.8 acyloxy, C.sub.2 to C.sub.8 alkenyl, C.sub.6 to C.sub.18 aryl or substituted aryl or C.sub.6 to C.sub.18 aryloxy or substituted aryloxy,
- R.sub.4 is C.sub.1 to C.sub.8 alkyl or C.sub.6 to C.sub.18 aryl or substituted aryl, and
- n is 1 to 8 and y is 1 to 5, and
- (2) an unsubstituted or an aryl-substituted C.sub.10 to C.sub.20 fatty acid, said aryl substituent being a C.sub.6 to C.sub.18 aryl or substituted aryl, said silane and fatty acid each being provided in an amount which when combined with the other provides a combined amount which is effective to inhibit water treeing and electrical treeing in said polymeric composition and which does not adversely affect the electrical insulating properties of said polymeric composition.
- 2. A composition according to claim 1 wherein the polymer is polyethylene.
- 3. A composition according to claim 1 wherein
- R.sub.1 is vinyl,
- R.sub.2 and R.sub.3 are each (OC.sub.n H.sub.2n).sub.y OR.sub.4,
- R.sub.4 is phenyl, and
- n is 2 and y is 1.
- 4. A composition according to claim 1 wherein
- R.sub.1 is methyl,
- R.sub.2 and R.sub.3 are each (OC.sub.n H.sub.2n).sub.y OR.sub.4,
- R.sub.4 is phenyl, and
- n is 2 and y is 1.
- 5. A composition according to claim 1 wherein
- R.sub.1, R.sub.2 and R.sub.3 are each (OC.sub.n H.sub.2n).sub.y OR.sub.4,
- R.sub.4 is phenyl, and
- n is 2 and y is 1.
- 6. A composition according to claim 1 wherein
- R.sub.1 is vinyl,
- R.sub.2 and R.sub.3 are each (OC.sub.n H.sub.2n).sub.y OR.sub.4,
- R.sub.4 is methyl, and
- n is 2 and y is 1.
- 7. A composition according to claim 1 wherein
- R.sub.1 is methyl,
- R.sub.2 and R.sub.3 are each (OC.sub.n H.sub.2n).sub.y OR.sub.4,
- R.sub.4 is methyl, and
- n is 2 and y is 1.
- 8. A composition according to claim 1 wherein
- R.sub.1, R.sub.2 and R.sub.3 are (OC.sub.n H.sub.2n).sub.y OR.sub.4,
- R.sub.4 is methyl, and
- n is 2 and y is 1.
- 9. A composition according to claims 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 or 8 wherein the fatty acid is stearic acid.
- 10. A composition according to claims 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 or 8 wherein the fatty acid is phenyl stearic acid.
- 11. A composition according to claims 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 or 8 wherein the fatty acid is tolyl stearic acid.
- 12. A composition in accordance with claims 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 or 8 which is curable or cured.
- 13. A composition in accordance with claim 9 which is curable or cured.
- 14. A composition in accordance with claim 10 which is curable or cured.
- 15. A composition in accordance with claim 11 which is curable or cured.
- 16. An electrical conductor coated with the composition of claims 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 or 8.
- 17. An electrical conductor coated with the composition of claim 13.
- 18. An electrical conductor coated with the composition of claim 14.
- 19. An electrical conductor coated with the composition of claim 15.
- 20. A method of stabilizing polymeric insulated electrical conductor against water treeing and electrical treeing which comprises:
- coating an electrical conductor with an insulating effective amount of polymeric insulating composition, said composition consisting essentially of a homogeneous mixture of a solid synthetic organic polymeric thermoplastic resin and a water treeing and electrical treeing inhibitor consisting essentially of
- (1) a hydrocarboxy silane having the formula: ##STR7## wherein R.sub.1, R.sub.2 and R.sub.3 are the same or different and are (OC.sub.n H.sub.2n).sub.y OR.sub.4, C.sub.1 to C.sub.8 alkyl, C.sub.1 to C.sub.8 alkoxy, C.sub.1 to C.sub.8 acyloxy, C.sub.2 to C.sub.8 alkenyl, C.sub.6 to C.sub.18 aryl or substituted aryl or C.sub.6 to C.sub.18 aryloxy or substituted aryloxy,
- R.sub.4 is C.sub.1 to C.sub.8 alkyl or C.sub.6 to C.sub.18 aryl or substituted, aryl,
- n is 1 to 8 and y is 1 to 5, and
- (2) an unsubstituted or an aryl-substituted C.sub.10 -C.sub.20 fatty acid, said aryl substituent being a C.sub.6 to C.sub.18 aryl or substituted aryl, said silane and said fatty acid each being provided in an amount which when combined with the other provides a combined amount which is effective to inhibit water treeing and electrical treeing in said polymeric composition and which does not adversely affect the insulating properties of said polymeric composition, whereby said insulated electrical conductor exhibits water treeing and electrical treeing inhibition when exposed to an environment subject to water treeing and electrical treeing conditions.
- 21. A method according to claim 20 wherein the polymer is polyethylene.

- 35. A water tree and an electrical tree inhibitor composition for solid synthetic organic polymeric thermoplastic resin consisting essentially of:
- (a) a hydrocarboxyalkoxy silane having the formula: ##STR8## wherein R.sub.1, R.sub.2 and R.sub.3 are the same or different and are (OC.sub.n H.sub.2n).sub.y OR.sub.4, C.sub.1 to C.sub.8 alkyl, C.sub.1 to C.sub.8 alkoxy, C.sub.1 to C.sub.8 acyloxy, C.sub.2 to C.sub.8 alkenyl, C.sub.6 to C.sub.18 aryl or substituted aryl or C.sub.6 to C.sub.18 aryloxy or substituted aryloxy,
- R.sub.4 is C.sub.1 to C.sub.8 alkyl or C.sub.6 to C.sub.18 aryl or substituted aryl,
- n is 1 to 8 and y is 1 to 5, and
- (b) an unsubstituted or an aryl substituted C.sub.10 to C.sub.20 fatty acid, said aryl substituent being a C.sub.6 to C.sub.18 aryl or substituted aryl,
- said saline and said fatty acid each being provided in an amount which when combined with the other provides a combined amount which is effective to inhibit water treeing and electrical treeing in polymeric compositions and which does not adversely affect the electrical insulating properties of polymeric compositions.
- 36. A water tree and electrical tree inhibitor composition according to claim 35 wherein

- R.sub.2 and R.sub.3 are each (OC.sub.n H.sub.2n).sub.y OR.sub.4

- 37. A water tree and an electrical tree inhibitor composition according to claim 35 wherein

- 41. A water tree and an electrial tree inhibitor composition according to claim 35 wherein

- 42. A water tree and an electrical tree inhibitor composition according to claims 36, 37, 38, 39, 40 or 41 wherein the fatty acid is stearic acid.
- 43. A water tree and an electrical tree inhibitor composition according to claims 36, 37, 38, 39, 40 or 41 wherein the fatty acid is phenyl stearic acid.
