The tray 5 can be formed by other flap or panel positioning steps, and the tray 5 could be otherwise shaped, arranged, and/or configured without departing from the disclosure.

As shown in FIG. 5, the lid assembly 15 is formed by first positioning the lid blank 13 in a similar manner as the tray blank 3 to form a top portion or lid 15a of the lid assembly (FIG. 5A). When the lid 15a is inverted, as shown in FIGS. 5 and 5A, it is in the form of a tray that is generally similar in shape as the tray 5 described above. The lid side panels 91, 93, 95 can be folded along respective fold lines 97, 99, 101 to be generally perpendicular to the lid central panel 87. Each adjacent pair of lid corner panels 105, 131; 107, 113; and 111, 115 are also inwardly folded, overlapped, and placed in face-to-face contact to form respective closed lid corners 149, 151, 153. The overlapped lid corner panels 105, 131; 107, 113; and 111, 115 can be positioned in face-to-face contact with either lid side panel of the respective pairs of lid side panels 91, 93; 91, 95; or 93, 95 respectively adjacent to the lid corners 149, 151, 153. For example, the lid corner panel 105 can be adhered to the first lid side panel 91, the lid corner panel 113 can be adhered to the third lid side panel 95, and the lid corner panel 111, can be adhered to the lid side panel 93.

After positioning the lid corner panels 105, 131; 107, 113; and 111, 115, the lid reinforcement flaps 137, 139, 141 are downwardly folded relative to a respective lid side panel 91, 93, 95 along a respective fold line 143, 145, 147 to overlap the respective lid side panel 91, 93, 95 and the lid corner panels 105, 131, 107, 113, 111, 115 disposed therebetween. The lid reinforcement flaps 137, 139, 141 can be adhered to the inner surface of the respective lid side panel 91, 93, 95, the pairs of lid corner panels 105, 131; 107, 113; or 111, 115 disposed between the lid reinforcement flap and the respective lid side panel, or combinations thereof. The lid 15a can be formed by other flap or panel positioning steps, and the lid 15a could be otherwise shaped, arranged, and/or configured without departing from the disclosure.

The insert 15b or bottom portion of the lid assembly 15 can be formed by upwardly folding the insert side panels 167, 169, 171 relative to the insert central panel 165. The insert 15b is sized to fit inside the inverted lid 15a of the lid assembly 15. As shown in FIG. 5, the insert 15b is inserted into the interior space 201 (FIG. 5A) of the lid 15a, and the insert central panel 165 positioned in face-to-face contact with the lid central panel 87 of the lid 15a. The insert side panels 167, 169, 171 fit inside and are generally in face-to-face contact with the lid reinforcement flaps 137, 139, 141 of the respective lid side panels 91, 93, 95 of the lid 15a. The insert central panel 165 can be adhesively secured to the lid central panel 87 by adhesive (e.g., glue), or the insert 15b can be secured to the lid 15a by other suitable attachment mechanisms. Further the lid assembly 15 can be formed by other flap or panel positioning steps and the lid assembly 15 can be otherwise shaped, arranged, and/or configure without departing from the disclosure. For example, the lid assembly 15 could be a one-piece lid with the top portion 15a and the bottom portion 15b being formed from the same blank without departing from the disclosure.

As shown in FIG. 6, the package 7 can be formed by placing a food product (not shown) in the tray 5, and closing the package by placing the lid over the tray to interior space 200 of the tray. The insert side panels 167, 169, 171 of the insert 15b fit inside the tray side panels 19, 25, 29 of the tray 5 so that the bottom edges (at fold lines 143, 145, 147) of the lid side panels 91, 93, 95 of the lid 15a abut a respective top edge (at fold lines 77, 79, 81) of the tray side panels 19, 25, 29 of the tray 5 so that the package 7 is configured in a closed position 210. As shown in FIG. 7, when cooking or heating the food product, the lid assembly 15 can be raised into a venting position 212 so that the lower portion 15b of the lid assembly is exposed in a manner to allow venting of hot air or steam from inside the package 7 through the openings 181 in the central portions of the insert side panels. In some embodiments, the lid assembly 15 can be raised to the position of FIG. 7 prior to initiating heating or cooking of the food product. In other embodiments, the heating or cooking of the food product can be initiated with the lid assembly in the closed position 210 of FIG. 6 and the formation of heated air or steam inside the package 7 will raise the lid assembly to a partial venting position (not shown) where the venting portions 183 of the insert side panels 167, 169, 171 are at least partially exposed above the top edges of the tray side panels 19, 25, 29 of the tray 5 to allow gases in the package to escape through the openings 181. In some embodiments, further heating or cooking of the food product will further raise the lid assembly 15 to the venting position 212 of FIG. 7.

In the illustrated embodiment, the tray central panel 17, the lid central panel 87, and the insert central panel 165 are substantially equilateral triangles, wherein the tray central panel 17 and the lid central panel 87 are substantially the same size, wherein the height H2 of the lid central panel 87 is substantially the same as the height H3 of the tray central panel 17. Accordingly, the lid side panels 91, 93, 95 are generally aligned with one of the tray side panels 19, 25, 29 when the lid assembly 15 engages the tray 5 in either the closed position 210 or the venting position 212. For example, in the illustrated embodiment, the tray side panel 19 and the lid side panel 91 are aligned and cooperate to form a side wall 221 of the package 7, the tray side panel 25 and the lid side panel 93 are aligned and cooperate to form a side wall 223 of the package 7, and the tray side panel 29 and the lid side panel 95 are aligned and cooperate to form a side wall 225 of the package 7. Since the central panels are equilateral triangles, the lid assembly 15 can be oriented with respect to the tray 5 so that the lid side panels 91, 93, 95 are generally aligned with any one of the tray side panels 19, 25, 29. In an alternative embodiment, the lid central panel 87 can be a different size than the tray central panel 17. In a further alternative, the central panels can be non-equilateral triangles, such as isosceles or scalene triangles, or the central panels can be any other shape.

Any of the various embodiments of the present disclosure could include at least one microwave energy interactive element that may comprise a susceptor for becoming hot when exposed to microwave energy, although other types and various combinations of microwave energy interactive elements are also within the scope of the present disclosure, as will be discussed below. Also, the various embodiments of the present disclosure could be free of a microwave energy interactive element without departing from the disclosure.

A blank according to the present disclosure can be, for example, formed from coated paperboard and similar materials. For example, the interior and/or exterior sides of the blank can be coated with a clay coating. The clay coating may then be printed over with product, advertising, price coding, and other information or images. The blank may then be coated with a varnish to protect any information printed on the blank. The blank may also be coated with, for example, a moisture barrier layer, on either or both sides of the blank. In accordance with the above-described embodiments, the blank may be constructed of paperboard of a caliper such that it is heavier and more rigid than ordinary paper. The blank can also be constructed of other materials, such as cardboard, hard paper, or any other material having properties suitable for enabling the package to function at least generally as described herein. The blank can also be laminated or coated with one or more sheet-like materials at selected panels or panel sections.

In accordance with the above-described embodiments of the present disclosure, a fold line can be any substantially linear, although not necessarily straight, form of weakening that facilitates folding therealong. More specifically, but not for the purpose of narrowing the scope of the present disclosure, fold lines may include: a score line, such as lines formed with a blunt scoring knife, or the like, which creates a crushed portion in the material along the desired line of weakness; a cut that extends partially into a material along the desired line of weakness, and/or a series of cuts that extend partially into and/or completely through the material along the desired line of weakness; and various combinations of these features.

As an example, a tear line can include: a slit that extends partially into the material along the desired line of weakness, and/or a series of spaced apart slits that extend partially into and/or completely through the material along the desired line of weakness, or various combinations of these features. As a more specific example, one type tear line is in the form of a series of spaced apart slits that extend completely through the material, with adjacent slits being spaced apart slightly so that a nick (e.g., a small somewhat bridging-like piece of the material) is defined between the adjacent slits for typically temporarily connecting the material across the tear line. The nicks are broken during tearing along the tear line. The nicks typically are a relatively small percentage of the tear line, and alternatively the nicks can be omitted from or torn in a tear line such that the tear line is a continuous cut line. That is, it is within the scope of the present disclosure for each of the tear lines to be replaced with a continuous slit, or the like. For example, a cut line can be a continuous slit or could be wider than a slit without departing from the present disclosure.

The above embodiments may be described as having one or more panels adhered together by glue during erection of the package embodiments. The term “glue” is intended to encompass all manner of adhesives commonly used to secure package panels in place.

The foregoing description illustrates and describes various embodiments of the present disclosure. As various changes could be made in the above construction, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense. Furthermore, the present disclosure covers various modifications, combinations, and alterations, etc., of the above-described embodiments that are within the scope of the claims. Additionally, the disclosure shows and describes only selected embodiments, but various other combinations, modifications, and environments are within the scope of the disclosure as expressed herein, commensurate with the above teachings, and/or within the skill or knowledge of the relevant art. Furthermore, certain features and characteristics of each embodiment may be selectively interchanged and applied to other illustrated and non-illustrated embodiments of the disclosure.
