Claims
- 1. A light indicating assembly comprising:
a plurality of triboluminescent particles dispersed throughout a frangible body, a source of mechanical energy, said source for disrupting said frangible body by communicating said mechanical energy onto at least a part of said frangible body, wherein a portion of said mechanical energy is communicated to said triboluminescent particles such that at least some portion of said triboluminescent particles absorb a sufficient quantity of said mechanical energy to excite a light pulse; and a light sensing means responsive to said light pulse.
- 2. The light indicating assembly of claim 1, further comprising a means for communicating said light pulse from a point adjacent to said frangible body to said light sensing means.
- 3. The light indicating assembly of claim 2, wherein said light transmission means comprises an optical fiber.
- 4. The light indicating assembly of claim 1, wherein said light transmission means comprises an open aperture.
- 5. The light indicating assembly of claim 1, wherein said light sensing means comprises a transducer means for transforming electromagnetic radiation into an electrical current.
- 6. The light indicating assembly of claim 1, wherein said light sensing means is selected from the list consisting of photographic film, a photodiode, a photometer, a photo-multiplier tube, a charge coupled device, an avalanche photodiode, and any other light sensing device or combination thereof.
- 7. The light indicating assembly of claim 1, wherein said light sensing means further comprises a means for collecting said light pulse.
- 8. The light indicating assembly of claim 7, wherein said means for collecting further comprises one or more lenses.
- 9. The light indicating assembly of claim 1, wherein said plurality of triboluminescent particles comprise any material emitting a detectable light pulse in response to absorption of mechanical energy.
- 10. The light indicating assembly of claim 9, wherein said triboluminescent particles emit a detectable pulse of light as said particles are fractured.
- 11. The light indicating assembly of claim 9, wherein said crystals are selected from the group of materials consisting of lanthanide chelates.
- 12. The light indicating assembly of claim 11, wherein said crystals consist essentially of a europium tetrakis(dibenzoylmethane) triethyl ammonium salt.
- 13. The light indicating assembly of claim 1, wherein said frangible body comprises a brittle porous material.
- 14. The light indicating assembly of claim 13, wherein said frangible body further comprises a network of open or closed cells.
- 15. The light indicating assembly of claim 14, wherein said frangible body is a low density foam.
- 16. The light indicating assembly of claim 15, wherein said porous foam comprises a polymer.
- 17. The light indicating assembly of claim 16, wherein said polymer is a water-blown polyurethane foam.
- 18. The light indicating assembly of claim 1, wherein said source of mechanical energy comprises:
a piston means contained within a cylinder, said cylinder comprising a smooth interior wall and one substantially closed end, said frangible body contained within said cylinder between said piston means and said substantially closed end, said frangible body extending substantially across a diameter of said cylinder; and drive means for driving said piston means onto said frangible body such that said frangible body is crushed at a strain rate in excess of 1 meters/meter/second.
- 19. The light indicating assembly of claim 18, wherein said piston means is a cylindrical disc, or plate, wherein said disc, or plate is arranged and disposed within said cylinder in order to move freely along an entire length of said cylinder.
- 20. The light indicating assembly of claim 19, wherein said piston means engages said interior wall so as to form a short term, near hermetic seal with said interior wall.
- 21. The light indicating assembly of claim 18, wherein said drive means comprises releasing stored chemical, mechanical, or hydraulic energy.
- 22. The light indicating assembly of claim 21, wherein said releasing said chemical energy comprises igniting a pyrotechnic match or ignitor.
- 23. The light indicating assembly of claim 21, wherein releasing said mechanical energy comprises releasing a compressed spring.
- 24. The light indicating assembly of claim 23, wherein said compressed spring is engaged by a ratchet-paw mechanism.
- 25. The light indicating assembly of claim 21, wherein releasing said hydraulic energy comprises pressurizing a fluid, wherein said fluid is a incompressible liquid or a compressed gas.
- 26. A composition of matter for producing a transient light pulse, comprising:
a lanthanide chelate having the property of triboluminescence; and a cross-linked, polycondensation polymer, wherein said polymer is derived from a list of constituents consisting of one or more monomers, one or more monomer and pre-polymers, and mixtures of said one or more monomers and/or pre-polymers, said constituents comprising at least two different reactive groups.
