The present invention relates to trigger locking or safety devices.
Trigger Trap is a development I have come to find a great use for in the presentation of newly manufactured firearms. Although this product serves as a locking or safety device, its main goal was to maintain the“newness” of a firearm. In this case its means of attachment is also a means of notification that an owner's manual is strongly suggested before use.
It should also be noted that this product is made in an effort to protect from any undesired operation of any triggered device especially if it can be deemed as a danger if used without proper direction and knowledge. Saws, drill, nail-drivers to name just a few of such devices but my descriptions herein are focused on their use in varied firearms applications.
The above disadvantages are addressed by a trigger cover for a firearm comprising an enclosure defining a space configured to receive a trigger guard. The enclosure has side panels configured to prevent operational access to the trigger, and an aperture configured to receive an elongated strap. The strap is received in the aperture and is configured to secure the enclosure to the firearm. The strap is resistant to toolless removal, and readily severable with a tool to enable removal of the enclosure.
The basic design set forth is a basic model which can entrap a standard trigger guard on common rifles and shotguns as well as some pistols. It has one side open to allow the insertion of the trigger and guard making it virtually impossible to insert a finger and pull the trigger. Some triggers however are built differently so two side of the trigger trap may have to be open for this protective device to be applied. Even further, some guns may have built in trigger systems and a Trigger Trap with 3 sides open may be required.
A Trigger Trap may be held in place by any means, even may be built into the device, however in this instance we are using zip ties or cable ties as they may be called. These may even enhance the safety aspect of the Trigger Trap by placement onto the firearm or even within the trigger guard. Optional insertions of baffles of some sort may even be employed to limit trigger movement. This would over and above the basic blocking action, prevent the trigger being deployed.
Trigger Trap construction can be done with a wide range of materials. It is most often based on the ability to be put into place without damage to the product it is designed to protect from use. In my case plastic is being used. It can be rigid or pliable but should not be easily overcome if put into place. It can be clear or opaque.
In this case a hole is place on each side of the Trigger Trap, so as to allow the zip tie to be put through the devise while it is in place over the trigger guard. However, in some cases for better more than one hole on each side may be preferred. It has to do mostly with the design of the gun, in both shape and function. Indeed, no holes may be needed if an adhesive type of system is employed to hold the Trigger Trap in place. It is conceivable that even friction can be used or a clip-on trigger design (where the gun design enables the attachment). Even a clamshell design.
The purpose as originally conceived was to keep new guns seen as new by the new owners. With the Trigger Trap in place, they will know it came from the factory this way with whatever messages that are shown or implied by its presence. That is not to say it's only use is for new guns. This product is functional, inexpensive and can even be reusable. The broad application for this item is immeasurable due to the simplicity, cost and easy of application. The ease at which modification can be made for “Custom Fits” makes it extremely versatile.
