Claims
- 1. A system for electro-optically reading bar code symbols, comprising:
- a) a housing movable relative to a symbol to be read during an aiming mode of operation;
- b) a reader in the housing, including a light source for directing a light beam toward the symbol for reflection therefrom, a light sensor having a field of view and operative for detecting light reflected from the symbol and for generating an electrical signal indicative of the detected light, and a scanner for scanning at least one of the light beam and the field of view during a scanning mode of operation; and
- c) a trigger switch on the housing, said trigger switch being manually displaceable by a user from a first position to a second position for activating the reader during the aiming mode to direct the light beam out of the housing onto the symbol to enable the user to move the housing and position the light beam on the symbol, said trigger switch being releasable from the second position and automatically returnable to the first position for activating the reader to initiate the scanning mode.
- 2. The system as claimed in claim 1, wherein the housing includes a handle for gripping by the user.
- 3. The system as claimed in claim 2, wherein the trigger switch is mounted on the handle.
- 4. The system as claimed in claim 1, wherein the housing includes a main portion having a window for the light beam, and a handle portion for supporting the main portion from below, and wherein the trigger switch is mounted on the handle portion adjacent the main portion.
- 5. The system as claimed in claim 1, wherein the light source is a laser diode.
- 6. The system as claimed in claim 1, wherein the light sensor is a photodiode.
- 7. The system as claimed in claim 1, wherein the light sensor is a charge coupled array device.
- 8. The system as claimed in claim 1, wherein the return of the trigger switch to said first position activates the reader to transfer the electrical signal away from the reader.
- 9. The system as claimed in claim 8, and further comprising a printer for receiving and printing the transferred electrical signal.
- 10. The system as claimed in claim 8, and further comprising a display for receiving and visually displaying the transferred electrical signal.
- 11. The system as claimed in claim 8, wherein the reader includes a wireless transmitter for transmitting the electrical signal away from the reader; and further comprising a receiver in wireless communication with the transmitter for receiving the transferred electrical signal.
- 12. The system as claimed in claim 11, wherein the transmitter and the receiver operate at radio frequencies.
- 13. The system as claimed in claim 11, wherein the transmitter and the receiver operate at infrared frequencies.
- 14. The system as claimed in claim 1, and further comprising an electronic article surveillance tag detector for detecting a tag associated with an article bearing the symbol; and wherein the return of the trigger to said first position activates the detector to deactivate the tag.
