Claims
- 1. A process for preparing an aromatic 1, 3, 5-triazine compound from an aromatic nitrile compound which comprises heating the aromatic nitrile compound to a temperature in the range of from about 100.degree. C. to about 700.degree. C. in the presence of a catalyst consisting essentially of a compound or mixture of compounds from at least one of the following groups:
- A. organic sulfonic and sulfinic acids,
- B. organic phosphonic and phosphinic acids, and
- C. metallic acetylacetonates, at a pressure in the range of from about atmospheric pressure to about 10,000 p.s.i.
- 2. The process of claim 1 wherein the aromatic nitrile compound is heated to a temperature in the range of from about 100.degree. C. to about 500.degree. C.
- 3. The process of claim 1 wherein the aromatic nitrile compound is heated to a temperature in the range of from about 200.degree. C. to about 350.degree. C.
- 4. The process of claim 1 conducted at a pressure in the range of from about 50 p.s.i. to about 1000 p.s.i.
- 5. The process of claim 1 conducted at a pressure in the range of from about 200 p.s.i. to about 750 p.s.i.
- 6. The process of claim 3 conducted at a pressure in the range of from about 50 p.s.i. to about 1000 p.s.i.
- 7. The process of claim 3 conducted at a pressure in the range of from about 200 p.s.i. to about 750 p.s.i.
- 8. The process of claim 1 wherein the aromatic nitrile compound is selected from the group consisting of meta-, ortho- and para-cyanobenzoic acid and their ester and halide derivatives.
- 9. The process of claim 1 wherein the aromatic nitrile compound is selected from the group consisting of meta-, ortho- and para-aminobenzonitrile.
- 10. The process of claim 1 wherein the aromatic nitrile compound is selected from the group consisting of 4-cyanophthalic anhydride and its ester and halide derivatives.
- 11. The process of claim 1 wherein the aromatic nitrile compound is 3,4-diaminobenzonitrile.
- 12. The process of claim 1 wherein the aromatic nitrile compound is 3,5-diaminobenzonitrile.
- 13. The process of claim 1 wherein the aromatic nitrile compound has the following structural formula: ##STR72## wherein X is a monovalent radical selected from the group consisting of --H, --CN, --F, --Cl, --Br, --NO.sub.2, --CH.sub.3, --NH.sub.2, --OCH.sub.3, ##STR73## and substituted aryls, and X may be substituted at the meta and para positions.

The invention described herein was made by an employee of the United States Government and may be manufactured and used by or for the Government for governmental purposes without the payment of any royalties thereon or therefor.
