Claims
- 1. A cannula head for use in a trocar system having an obturator, said cannula head comprising:
a housing having a first passageway extending therethrough for receiving the obturator, said housing having a distal opening and a proximal opening to said first passageway; and wherein at least a portion of an outer surface of the housing comprises a resilient non-slip material.
- 2. The cannula head of claim 1 wherein said resilient non-slip material extends along at least some of a bottom portion of the housing.
- 3. The cannula head of claim 1 wherein said resilient non-slip material extends around said distal opening.
- 4. The cannula head of claim 1 wherein said resilient non-slip material forms a seal between the distal opening and a cannula tube.
- 5. The cannula head of claim 1 wherein said resilient non-slip material extends along at least some of a bottom portion of the housing and around said distal opening.
- 6. The cannula head of claim 1 wherein said housing defines a recess for receiving said resilient non-slip material.
- 7. The cannula head of claim 1 further comprising a lower seal attachable across said first passageway.
- 8. The cannula head of claim 1 further comprising a releasably attachable upper seal connectable to said housing across said proximal opening.
- 9. The cannula head of claim 1 wherein said housing comprises a reduced distal portion, an enlarged proximal portion, an enlarged front portion, and a reduced rear portion.
- 10. The cannula head of claim 1 wherein said housing comprises a port having a Luer Lock fitting, said port being connectable in fluid communication with said first passageway.
- 11. The cannula head of claim 1 wherein said housing comprises a port having a Luer Lock fitting, and a second passageway for receiving a stopcock valve for controlling fluid through said port into said first passageway and out of said first passageway.
- 12. A cannula head for use in a trocar system having an obturator, said cannula head comprising:
a housing having a first passageway extending therethrough for receiving the obturator, said housing having a distal opening and a proximal opening to said first passageway; a port having a Luer Lock fitting, said port being connectable in fluid communication with said first passageway; and wherein said housing and said port with said Luer lock fitting are monolithic.
- 13. The cannula head of claim 12 wherein said housing comprises a second passageway opening into said first passageway, and wherein said port opens onto said second passageway.
- 14. The cannula head of claim 13 further comprising a stopcock valve receivable in said second passageway for regulating the flow of fluid through said port, said valve being receivable in said second passageway.
- 15. The cannula head of claim 14 wherein said stopcock valve comprises a first position for allowing pressurized fluid through said port into said first passageway, a second position for inhibiting transfer of fluid between said first passageway and said port, and a third position for venting pressurized fluid from said first passageway.
- 16. The cannula head of claim 12 wherein at least a portion of an outer surface of the housing comprises a resilient non-slip material.
- 17. The cannula head of claim 12 further comprising a releasably attachable seal connectable to said housing across said first passageway.
- 18. The cannula head of claim 12 further comprising a releasably attachable upper seal connectable to said housing across said proximal opening.
- 19. The cannula head of claim 12 wherein said housing comprises a reduced distal portion, an enlarged proximal portion, an enlarged front portion, and a reduced rear portion.
- 20. A cannula head for use in a trocar system having an obturator, said cannula head comprising:
a housing having a first passageway extending therethrough for receiving the obturator, said housing having a distal opening and a proximal opening to said first passageway; and wherein an outer surface of said housing comprises a reduced distal portion, an enlarged proximal portion, an enlarged top portion, and a reduced bottom portion.
- 21. A cannula head for use in a trocar system having an obturator, said cannula head comprising:
a housing having a first passageway extending therethrough for receiving the obturator, said housing having a distal opening and a proximal opening to said first passageway for receiving the obturator; a port having a Luer Lock fitting, said port being connectable in fluid communication with said first passageway; a stopcock valve having a lever installed in said housing for regulating the flow of fluid through said port; at least a portion of an outer surface of the housing comprising a resilient non-slip material; a flapper valve disposed across said passageway within said housing; a releasably attachable seal connectable to said housing across said proximal opening; and wherein an outer surface of said housing comprises a reduced distal portion, an enlarged proximal portion, an enlarged forward portion, and a reduced rear portion.
- 22. A cannula for use in a trocar system having an obturator, said cannula comprising:
a cannula head and a reusable and releasably attachable cannula tube defining a passageway extending therethrough, and wherein said cannula head comprises a housing having a resilient material for forming a seal between said housing and said cannula tube.
- 23. The cannula of claim 22 wherein said cannula tube comprises titanium.
- 24. The cannula of claim 22 wherein said cannula head and said attachable cannula tube are connectable with a bayonet connector.
- 25. A trocar system comprising:
a cannula head of claim 1 and a cannula tube; an obturator receivable in said cannula head and cannula tube.
- 26. A trocar system comprising:
a cannula head of claim 12 and a cannula tube; and an obturator receivable in said cannula head and cannula tube.
- 27. A trocar system comprising:
a cannula head of claim 20 and a cannula tube; and an obturator receivable in said cannula head and cannula tube.
- 28. A trocar system comprising:
a cannula head of claim 21 and a cannula tube; and an obturator receivable in said cannula head and cannula tube.
- 29. A trocar system comprising:
a cannula of claim 22; and an obturator receivable in said cannula.
- 30. An ergonomically shaped trocar system comprising:
a cannula having a proximal head; an obturator having a proximal cap, said obturator being insertable into said cannula so that its cap is adjacent said head; said head and said cap being shaped so that when said obturator is inserted into said cannula with the head and cap in alignment, said head and said cap together form a bulbous, substantially continuous outer surface grippable by a human hand; and at least a portion of said head comprising a non-slip material.
- 31. An ergonomically shaped trocar system comprising:
a cannula having a proximal head; an obturator having a proximal cap; and said head and said cap being shaped so that when said obturator is inserted into said cannula with the head and cap in alignment, said head and said cap together comprise a handle having a reduced distal portion, an enlarged proximal portion, an enlarged forward portion, and a reduced rear portion.
- 32. The trocar system of claim 31 wherein at least a portion of an outer surface of said head comprises a resilient non-slip material.
- 33. The trocar system of claim 31 wherein said obturator comprises a locking mechanism disposed in said cap for locking a shield in said first position over a blade when said obturator is withdrawn from said cannula and unlocking said shield when said obturator is inserted into said cannula so that said shield is retractable to a second position to expose said blade when a force is applied to said shield.
- 34. A method for forming a cannula head of a trocar system, the method comprising:
forming a housing comprising a rigid material; and attaching a non-slip material to the housing.
- 35. The method of claim 34 wherein attaching the non-slip material to the housing comprises using an overmolding process.
- 36. A method for forming a monolithic cannula head for use with a trocar system having an obturator, the method comprising:
integrally forming a housing having a port having a Luer Lock fitting, the housing having a first passageway extending therethrough for receiving the obturator, the housing having a distal opening and a proximal opening to the first passageway, and the port being connectable in fluid communication with the first passageway.
- 37. The method of claim 36 wherein the integrally forming step further comprises integrally forming a second passageway for receiving a stopcock, the second passageway opening into the first passageway.
- 38. The method of claim 36 wherein the integrally forming step further comprises integrally forming an outer recess on the housing for receiving a non-slip material.
