Claims
- 1. An internal combustion engine turbocharger control system comprising:
- at least one turbocharger connected to the engine and having a turbine and a compressor;
- a bypass valve connecting the compressor and the turbine
- a wastegate connected between the engine and turbine;
- an electronic control controlling in combination the bypass valve and the wastegate;
- an engine speed sensor;
- an engine intake manifold pressure sensor; and
- wherein the electronic control responds to the engine speed sensor and engine intake manifold pressure sensor to control the bypass valve and wastegate.
- 2. The turbocharger control system of claim 1 further comprising an ambient temperature sensor.
- 3. The turbocharger control system of claim 1 further comprising a barometric pressure sensor and wherein the electronic control responds to the engine speed sensor, engine intake manifold pressure sensor, and the barometric pressure sensor to control the bypass valve and wastegate.
- 4. The turbocharger control system of claim 3 wherein the turbocharger has a preferred band of operation based upon engine speed, barometric pressure and intake manifold pressure.
- 5. The turbocharger control system of claim 4 wherein the electronic control maintains the turbocharger operation within the preferred band of operation by varying the bypass valve and the wastegate.
- 6. An internal combustion engine turbocharger control system comprising:
- at least one turbocharger connected to the engine and having a turbine and a compressor;
- a bypass valve connecting the compressor and the turbine
- a wastegate connected between the engine and turbine;
- an electronic control controlling in combination the bypass valve and the wastegate; and
- an engine intake throttle arranged between the compressor and the engine and having a throttle angle for variably controlling engine intake air wherein the throttle angle versus engine load can be graphically represented and wherein the electronic control provides for a substantially linear graph of the throttle angle change as the engine load varies by controlling the bypass valve and wastegate.
- 7. An electronic turbocharger control system for a stationary internal combustion engine fueled by a gaseous fuel, the electronic turbocharger control system comprising:
- a turbocharger for the engine which has a turbine and a compressor;
- an engine speed sensor that monitors engine speed and generates a signal in response thereto;
- an engine load sensor that monitors engine load and generates a signal in response thereto;
- an electronic controller that inputs the signals from the engine speed sensor and the engine load sensor and outputs a wastegate valve control signal and a bypass valve control signal;
- a wastegate valve connected between the engine and the turbocharger turbine for diverting engine exhaust away from the turbine in response to the wastegate valve control is signal; and
- a bypass valve connected between an outlet for the turbocharger compressor and an inlet for the turbocharger turbine;
- wherein the position of the wastegate valve and the position of the bypass valve are adjusted to control air flow through the turbocharger compressor and to control a ratio of discharge pressure from the turbocharger compressor compared to inlet pressure of the turbocharger compressor; and the system further comprises:
- means for creating a wastegate valve position feedback signal indicating a position of the wastegate valve; and
- means for creating a bypass valve feedback signal indicating a position of the bypass valve;
- wherein the electronic controller receives the feedback signals.
- 8. An electronic turbocharger control system for a stationary internal combustion engine fueled by a gaseous fuel, the electronic turbocharger control system comprising:
- a turbocharger for the engine which has a turbine and a compressor;
- an engine speed sensor that monitors engine speed and generates a signal in response thereto;
- an engine load sensor that monitors engine load and generates a signal in response thereto;
- an electronic controller that inputs the signals from the engine speed sensor and the engine load sensor and outputs a wastegate valve control signal and a bypass valve control signal;
- a wastegate valve connected between the engine and the turbocharger turbine for diverting engine exhaust away from the turbine in response to the wastegate valve control signal; and
- a bypass valve connected between an outlet for the turbocharger compressor and an inlet for the turbocharger turbine;
- wherein the position of the wastegate valve and the position of the bypass valve are adjusted to control air flow through the turbocharger compressor and to control a ratio of discharge pressure from the turbocharger compressor compared to inlet pressure of the turbocharger compressor; and the system further comprises:
- a barometric pressure sensor that monitors barometric pressure and provides a signal in response thereto;
- wherein the electronic controller includes a memory programmed with sets of predetermined parameters for determining the wastegate valve control signal and the bypass valve control signals in combination, each set of predetermined parameters being based on barometric pressure, and wherein the electronic controller selects the appropriate set of predetermined parameters based on the signal from the barometric pressure sensor.
- 9. An electronic turbocharger control system for a stationary internal combustion engine fueled by a gaseous fuel, the electronic turbocharger control system comprising:
- a turbocharger for the engine which has a turbine and a compressor;
- an engine speed sensor that monitors engine speed and generates a signal in response thereto;
- an engine load sensor that monitors engine load and generates a signal in response thereto;
- an electronic controller that inputs the signals from the engine speed sensor and the engine load sensor and outputs a wastegate valve control signal and a bypass valve control signal;
- a wastegate valve connected between the engine and the turbocharger turbine for diverting engine exhaust away from the turbine in response to the wastegate valve control signal; and
- a bypass valve connected between an outlet for the turbocharger compressor and an inlet for the turbocharger turbine;
- wherein the position of the wastegate valve and the position of the bypass valve are adjusted to control air flow through the turbocharger compressor and to control a ratio of discharge pressure from the turbocharger compressor compared to inlet pressure of the turbocharger compressor; and the system further comprises:
- an ambient temperature sensor which monitors the ambient temperature and provides an ambient temperature signal in response thereto;
- wherein the electronic controller determines the wastegate valve control signal and the bypass valve control signal at least in part in response to the ambient temperature signal.
- 10. An electronic turbocharger control system for a stationary internal combustion engine fueled by a gaseous fuel, the electronic turbocharger control system comprising:
- a turbocharger for the engine which has a turbine and a compressor;
- an engine speed sensor that monitors engine speed and generates a signal in response thereto;
- an engine load sensor that monitors engine load and generates a signal in response thereto;
- an electronic controller that inputs the signals from the engine speed sensor and the engine load sensor and outputs a wastegate valve control signal and a bypass valve control signal;
- a wastegate valve connected between the engine and the turbocharger turbine for diverting engine exhaust away from the turbine in response to the wastegate valve control signal; and
- a bypass valve connected between an outlet for the turbocharger compressor and an inlet for the turbocharger turbine;
- wherein the position of the wastegate valve and the position of the bypass valve are adjusted to control air flow through the turbocharger compressor and to control a ratio of discharge pressure from the turbocharger compressor compared to inlet pressure of the turbocharger compressor; and the system further comprises:
- a wastegate valve control actuator that receives the wastegate valve control signal and positions the wastegate valve in response thereto.
- 11. An electronic turbocharger control system for a stationary internal combustion engine fueled by a gaseous fuel, the electronic turbocharger control system comprising:
- a turbocharger for the engine which has a turbine and a compressor;
- an engine speed sensor that monitors engine speed and generates a signal in response thereto;
- an engine load sensor that monitors engine load and generates a signal in response thereto;
- an electronic controller that inputs the signals from the engine speed sensor and the engine load sensor and outputs a wastegate valve control signal and a bypass valve control signal;
- a wastegate valve connected between the engine and the turbocharger turbine for diverting engine exhaust away from the turbine in response to the wastegate valve control signal; and
- a bypass valve connected between an outlet for the turbocharger compressor and an inlet for the turbocharger turbine;
- wherein the position of the wastegate valve and the position of the bypass valve are adjusted to control air flow through the turbocharger compressor and to control a ratio of discharge pressure from the turbocharger compressor compared to inlet pressure of the turbocharger compressor; and
- wherein the electronic controller simultaneously controls the position of the wastegate valve and the bypass valve in order to create a more linear throttle angle versus load curve.
- 12. A stationary internal combustion engine fueled by a gaseous fuel, the engine comprising:
- a turbocharger for the engine which has a turbine and a compressor;
- an engine speed sensor that monitors engine speed and generates a signal in response thereto;
- an engine load sensor that monitors engine load and generates a signal in response thereto;
- an electronic controller that inputs the signals from the engine speed sensor and the engine load sensor and outputs a wastegate valve control signal and a bypass valve control signal;
- a wastegate valve connected between the engine and the turbocharger turbine for diverting engine exhaust away from the turbine in response to the wastegate valve control signal; and
- a bypass valve connected between an outlet for the turbocharger compressor and an inlet for the turbocharger turbine;
- wherein the position of the wastegate valve and the position of the bypass valve are adjusted to control air flow through the turbocharger compressor and to control a ratio of discharge pressure from the turbocharger compressor compared to inlet pressure of the turbocharger compressor; and
- wherein the electronic controller includes a memory programmed with sets of predetermined parameters which are used to generate the wastegate valve control signal and the bypass valve control signal in combination, each set being based upon barometric pressure.
- 13. A stationary internal combustion engine fueled by a gaseous fuel, the engine comprising:
- a turbocharger for the engine which has a turbine and a compressor;
- an engine speed sensor that monitors engine speed and generates a signal in response thereto;
- an engine load sensor that monitors engine load and generates a signal in response thereto;
- an electronic controller that inputs the signals from the engine speed sensor and the engine load sensor and outputs a wastegate valve control signal and a bypass valve control signal;
- a wastegate valve connected between the engine and the turbocharger turbine for diverting engine exhaust away from the turbine in response to the wastegate valve control signal; and
- a bypass valve connected between an outlet for the turbocharger compressor and an inlet for the turbocharger turbine;
- wherein the position of the wastegate valve and the position of the bypass valve are adjusted to control air flow through the turbocharger compressor and to control a ratio of discharge pressure from the turbocharger compressor compared to inlet pressure of the turbocharger compressor; and the engine further comprises:
- means for creating a wastegate valve position feedback signal indicating a position of the wastegate valve; and
- means for creating a bypass valve feedback signal indicating a position of the bypass valve;
- wherein the electronic controller receives the feedback signals.
- 14. A stationary internal combustion engine fueled by a gaseous fuel, the engine comprising:
- a turbocharger for the engine which has a turbine and a compressor;
- an engine speed sensor that monitors engine speed and generates a signal in response thereto;
- an engine load sensor that monitors engine load and generates a signal in response thereto;
- an electronic controller that inputs the signals from the engine speed sensor and the engine load sensor and outputs a wastegate valve control signal and a bypass valve control signal;
- a wastegate valve connected between the engine and the turbocharger turbine for diverting engine exhaust away from the turbine in response to the wastegate valve control signal; and
- a bypass valve connected between an outlet for the turbocharger compressor and an inlet for the turbocharger turbine;
- wherein the position of the wastegate valve and the position of the bypass valve are adjusted to control air flow through the turbocharger compressor and to control a ratio of discharge pressure from the turbocharger compressor compared to inlet pressure of the turbocharger compressor; and the engine further comprises:
- a barometric pressure sensor that monitors barometric pressure and provides a signal in response thereto;
- wherein the electronic controller includes a memory programmed with sets of predetermined parameters for determining the wastegate valve control signal and the bypass valve control signals in combination, each set of predetermined parameters being based on barometric pressure, and wherein the electronic controller selects the appropriate set of predetermined parameters based on the signal from the barometric pressure sensor.
- 15. A stationary internal combustion engine fueled by a gaseous fuel, the engine comprising:
- a turbocharger for the engine which has a turbine and a compressor;
- an engine speed sensor that monitors engine speed and generates a signal in response thereto;
- an engine load sensor that monitors engine load and generates a signal in response thereto;
- an electronic controller that inputs the signals from the engine speed sensor and the engine load sensor and outputs a wastegate valve control signal and a bypass valve control signal;
- a wastegate valve connected between the engine and the turbocharger turbine for diverting engine exhaust away from the turbine in response to the wastegate valve control signal; and
- a bypass valve connected between an outlet for the turbocharger compressor and an inlet for the turbocharger turbine;
- wherein the position of the wastegate valve and the position of the bypass valve are adjusted to control air flow through the turbocharger compressor and to control a ratio of discharge pressure from the turbocharger compressor compared to inlet pressure of the turbocharger compressor; and the engine further comprises:
- an ambient temperature sensor which monitors the ambient temperature and provides an ambient temperature signal in response thereto;
- wherein the electronic controller determines the wastegate valve control signal and the bypass valve control signal at least in part in response to the ambient temperature signal.
- 16. A stationary internal combustion engine fueled by a gaseous fuel, the engine comprising:
- a turbocharger for the engine which has a turbine and a compressor;
- an engine speed sensor that monitors engine speed and generates a signal in reponse thereto;
- and engine load sensor that monitors engine load and generates a signal in response thereto;
- an electronic controller that inputs the signals from the engine speed sensor and the engine load sensor and outputs a wastegate valve control signal and a bypass valve control signal;
- a wastegate valve connected between the engine and the turbocharger turbine for diverting engine exhaust away from the turbine in response to the wastegate valve control signal; and
- a bypass valve connected between an outlet for the turbocharger compressor and an inlet for the turbocharger turbine;
- wherein the position of the wastegate valve and the position of the bypass valve are adjusted to control air flow through the turbocharger compressor and to control a ratio of discharge pressure from the turgocharger compressor compared to inlet pressure of the turbocharger compressor; and the engine further comprises:
- a wastegate valve control actuator that receives the wastegate valve control signal and positions the wastegate valve in response thereto.
- a turbocharger for the engine which has a turbine and a compressor;
- an engine speed sensor that monitors engine speed and generates a signal in response thereto;
- an engine load sensor that monitors engine load and generates a signal in response thereto;
- an electronic controller that inputs the signals from the engine speed sensor and the engine load sensor and outputs a wastegate valve control signal and a bypass valve control signal;
- a wastegate valve connected between the engine and the turbocharger turbine for diverting engine exhaust away from the turbine in response to the wastegate valve control signal; and
- a bypass valve connected between an outlet for the turbocharger compressor and an inlet for the turbocharger turbine;
- wherein the position of the wastegate valve and the position of the bypass valve are adjusted to control air flow through the turbocharger compressor and to control a ratio of discharge pressure from the turbocharger compressor compared to inlet pressure of the turbocharger compressor; and the engine further comprises:
- a wastegate valve control actuator that receives the wastegate valve control signal and positions the wastegate valve in response thereto.
- 17. A stationary internal combustion engine fueled by a gaseous fuel the engine comprising:
- a turbocharger for the engine which has a turbine and a compressor;
- an engine speed sensor that monitors engine speed and generates a signal in response thereto;
- an engine load sensor that monitors engine load and generates a signal in response thereto;
- an electronic controller that inputs the signals from the engine speed sensor and the engine load sensor and outputs a wastegate valve control signal and a bypass valve control signal;
- a wastegate valve connected between the engine and the turbocharger turbine for diverting engine exhaust away from the turbine in response to the wastegate valve control signal; and
- a bypass valve connected between an outlet for the turbocharger compressor and an inlet for the turbocharger turbine;
- wherein the position of the wastegate valve and the position of the bypass valve are adjusted to control air flow through the turbocharger compressor and to control a ratio of discharge pressure from the turbocharger compressor compared to inlet pressure of the turbocharger compressor; and
- wherein the electronic controller simultaneously controls the position of the wastegate valve and the bypass valve in order to create a more linear throttle angle versus load curve.
- 18. An electronic turbocharger control system for a stationary internal combustion engine fueled by a gaseous fuel, the electronic turbocharger control system comprising:
- a turbocharger for the engine which has a turbine and a compressor;
- an engine speed sensor that monitors engine speed and generates a signal in response thereto;
- an engine load sensor that monitors engine load and generates a signal in response thereto;
- an electronic controller that inputs the signals from the engine speed sensor and the engine load sensor and outputs a wastegate valve control signal and a bypass valve control signal;
- a wastegate valve connected between the engine and the turbocharger turbine for diverting engine exhaust away from the turbine in response to the wastegate valve control signal; and
- a bypass valve connected between an outlet for the turbocharger compressor and an inlet for the turbocharger turbine;
- wherein the position of the wastegate valve and the position of the bypass valve are adjusted to control air flow through the turbocharger compressor and to control a ratio of discharge pressure from the turbocharger compressor compared to inlet pressure of the turbocharger compressor; and
- wherein the electronic controller includes a memory programmed with sets of predetermined parameters which are used to generate the wastegate valve control signal and the bypass valve control signal in combination, each set being based upon barometric pressure.
