Claims
- 1. A thermosetting powder coating system in which competing reactions are taking place simultaneously, said reactions being:
- (A) a catalyzed self-curing of a portion of an epoxy resin present in an extruded mixture of the resin and a catalyst, and (B) a crosslinking reaction between another portion of the extruded resin and a low temperature curing agent;
- said extruded mixture and said low temperature curing agent both being in powder form and being blended to form a coating powder.
- 2. The system of claim 1 wherein the low temperature curing agent of reaction (B) is an epoxy resin adduct of an aliphatic polyamine having a primary amino group.
- 3. The system of claim 1 wherein the catalyst of reaction (A) is an epoxy adduct of an imidazole having the general formula: ##STR2## wherein R.sup.1, R.sup.2, R.sup.3, and R.sup.4 are independently hydrogen or any substituent which is not reactive with the epoxy resin.
- 4. The system of claim 1 wherein the reactions occur at a temperature of from about 180.degree. F. up to but not including the decomposition temperature of the blend.
- 5. The system of claim 4 wherein the temperature is from about 190.degree. F. to about 290.degree. F.
- 6. The system of claim 5 wherein the temperature is from about 190.degree. F. to about 250.degree. F.
- 7. The system of claim 4 wherein the epoxy resin is crystalline.
- 8. The system of claim 3 wherein R.sup.1, R.sup.2, R.sup.3, and R.sup.4 are independently alkyl, aryl, alkaryl.
- 9. The system of claim 3 wherein R.sup.2 is methyl, and R.sup.1, R.sup.3, and R.sup.4 are hydrogen.
- 10. The system of claim 1 wherein the rate of reactions (A) and (B) are different.
- 11. The system of claim 1 wherein the rate of reaction (B) is greater than that of reaction (A).
- 12. The system of claim 1 wherein the curing agent is an epoxy adduct of an aliphatic polyamine having a secondary amino group.
- 13. A thermosetting powder coating system in which the thermosetting of an extruded mixture of a self-curing epoxy resin and (A) a catalyst or (B) an amount of a low temperature curing agent insufficient to cause substantial curing of the resin during extrusion is facilitated by the separate addition of a low temperature curing agent; said extruded mixture and said separately added low temperature curing agent both being in powder form and being blended to form a coating powder.
- 14. The system of claim 13 wherein the low temperature curing agent (B) is a non-catalytic amount of said catalyst which is sufficient to complete the cure.
- 15. The system of claim 13 wherein the low temperature curing agent is an epoxy resin adduct of a aliphatic polyamine having a primary amino group.
- 16. The system of claim 13 wherein the catalyst is an epoxy adduct of an imidazole having the general formula: ##STR3## wherein R.sup.1, R.sup.2, R.sup.3, and R.sup.4 are independently hydrogen or any substituent which is not reactive with the epoxy resin.
- 17. The system of claim 1 wherein the catalyst of reaction (A) is an imidazole having the general formula: ##STR4## wherein R.sup.1, R.sup.2, R.sup.3, and R.sup.4 are independently hydrogen or any substituent which is not reactive with the epoxy resin.
