Claims
- 1. A polyethylene product comprising a foamed body portion and an outer thermal plastic skin fused to the foamed body portion.
- 2. A polyethylene product as claimed in claim 1 wherein said foamed body portion has a boundary layer which has undergone thermal degradation which acts as an intermediary securing said outer skin to said body portion.
- 3. A polyethylene product as claimed in claim 2 wherein said skin includes a significant amount of color pigment and said body portion has no appreciable or consistent color pigment.
- 4. A polyethylene product as claimed in claim 2 wherein said skin includes a significant mount of color pigment and is of a color unrelated to said body portion.
- 5. A polyethylene product as claimed in claim 4 wherein said body portion has no significant amount of color pigment.
- 6. A polyethylene product as claimed in claim 1 wherein only said outer skin includes any significant amounts of ultraviolet stabilizers.
- 7. A polyethylene product as claimed in claim 6 wherein said outer skin includes high mounts of color pigment and said body portion has low amounts of color pigment.
- 8. A polyethylene product as claimed in claim 2 wherein said body portion is cylindrical with an open central cavity in combination with an elongate member located within said cavity whereby said polyethylene product provides an outer resilient sheath about said elongate member.
- 9. In combination as claimed in claim 8 wherein said elongate structural member is part of a play structure.
- 10. A polyethylene product as claimed in claim 1 wherein said outer skin is made of polyethylene.
- 11. A method of manufacturing a foamed polyethylene product having an outer tough skin comprising extruding a foamed polyethylene body portion of a desired cross-section, partially cooling the extruded body portion and subsequently extruding a thin thermal plastic skin directly onto the body portion fusing the skin to an upper layer of the body portion, which due to the heat of the extruded skin causes limited collapse of a boundary layer of the foamed body portion and securement of said skin to said body portion.
- 12. A method of manufacture as claimed in claim 11 wherein said step of extruding said thermal plastic skin is conducted in line with said step of extruding said polyethylene body portion and prior to complete cooling of said polyethylene body portion.
- 13. A method as claimed in claim 12 wherein said polyethylene body is pulled through a cylindrical extruding die which applies said extruded skin to said body portion as it is pulled through said die.
- 14. A method as claimed in claim 13 wherein said extruding die applies a skin having a thickness of approximately 0.003 inches.
- 15. A method as claimed in claim 14 wherein said foamed body and said skin are of different colors.
- 16. A method as claimed in claim 13 wherein said cylindrical die includes a control arrangement for adjusting the extrusion discharge rate from the cylindrical die and said method includes adjusting said control arrangement to produce a desired outer skin thickness.
- 17. A foamed polyethylene product having a foamed body portion and a non-foamed outer skin when produced by the method as claimed in claim 11.
- 18. A polyethylene product when produced by the method as claimed in claim 12.
