Claims
- 1. A spindle hub configured for rotation about an axis, the spindle hub comprising:
a first end; a second end; and a plurality of through holes on the spindle hub such that the through holes extend from the first end to the second end in a direction generally parallel to the axis.
- 2. A spindle hub of claim 1 further comprising:
a weight in one particular of the plurality of through holes, wherein the weight and the particular through hole are configured such that the weight can be fixed at different positions along the particular through hole.
- 3. A spindle hub of claim 2 wherein the weight and the particular through hole are configured for interference fit or clearance with each other.
- 4. A spindle hub of claim 2 wherein the particular through hole has an internal thread and the weight has an external thread cooperative with the internal thread of the through hole.
- 5. A spindle hub of claim 1 wherein each of the through holes further includes a stop at the second end of the spindle hub.
- 6. A spindle hub of claim 5 further comprising:
a weight in one particular of the plurality of through holes, wherein the weight is configured such that the weight can be positioned in the particular through hole at the stop.
- 7. A spindle hub of claim 6 further comprising:
a retainer in the particular through hole wherein the retainer is configured to retain the weight in a position between the retainer and the stop.
- 8. A disc drive with a disc pack assembly which comprises:
a spindle hub configured for rotation about an axis, the spindle hub further comprising:
a first end; a second end; and a plurality of through holes on the spindle hub such that the through holes extend from the first end to the second end in a direction generally parallel to the axis.
- 9. A disc drive of claim 8 further comprising:
a weight in one particular of the plurality of through holes, wherein the weight and the particular through hole are configured such that the weight can be fixed at different positions along the particular through hole.
- 10. A disc drive of claim 9 wherein the through hole has an internal thread and the weight has an external thread cooperative with the internal thread of the through hole.
- 11. A spindle hub of claim 10 wherein the weight is a nylock-type screw.
- 12. A disc drive of claim 9 wherein the weight and the particular through hole are configured for interference fit or clearance with each other.
- 13. A disc drive of claim 8 wherein each of the through holes further includes a stop at the second end of the spindle hub.
- 14. A disc drive of claim 13 further comprising:
a weight in one particular of the plurality of through holes, wherein the weight is configured such that the weight can be positioned in the particular through hole at the stop.
- 15. A disc drive of claim 14 further comprising:
a retainer in the particular through hole wherein the retainer is configured to retain the weight in a position between the retainer and the stop.
- 16. A disc drive of claim 15 wherein the retainer and the particular through hole are configured for press fit or clearance with each other.
- 17. A disc drive of claim 15 wherein the retainer includes an internally threaded hole configured such that when the retainer is in the particular through hole, the internally threaded hole is accessible from the first end of the spindle hub.
- 18. A disc drive of claim 8 wherein each through hole is equidistant from another.
- 19. A method of balancing a disc pack assembly of a disc drive, the disc pack being configured to rotate about an axis, the method comprising steps of:
(a) providing a spindle hub having a plurality of through holes extending from a first end to a second end of the spindle hub in a direction generally parallel to the axis; and (b) positioning a weight within one particular of the plurality of through holes.
- 20. A method according to claim 19 wherein the positioning step (b) is carried out by accessing the weight from only the first end of the spindle hub.
- 21. A method according to claim 19 further comprising a step (c) of retaining the weight in a position within the particular through hole.
- 22. A method according to claim 21 wherein the retaining step (c) is carried out by accessing the disc pack assembly from only the first end of the spindle hub.
- 23. A method according to claim 19 further comprising a step (c) of determining imbalance of the disc pack assembly.
- 24. A method according to claim 19 wherein the providing step (a) and the positioning step (b) are performed to achieve two-plane balance of the disc pack assembly.
- 25. A disc drive comprising:
a disc pack assembly; and means for balancing the disc pack assembly.
