Claims
- 1. Apparatus for making a preform comprising:
- (a) means for providing a two-stage binder including a first binder constituent which has a first photo initiator responsive to visible light to generate free radicals which cross link and provide a viscosity sufficient to hold glass fibers together and a second binder constituent which has a cationic-type second photoinitiator responsive to ultraviolet light to generate electrons for cross linking and render the binder rigid;
- (b) means for applying the two-stage binder received from the providing means to coat a layer of glass fiber reinforcement material;
- (c) means for exposing the two-stage binder coated layer to visible light to activate the first binder the binder such that it has a viscosity sufficient to hold the glass fibers together for subsequent handling;
- (d) a preforming mold which is transparent to ultraviolet radiation for pressing the exposed layer into a desired shape;
- (e) means for precutting the exposed layer into precut portions;
- (f) means for placing one of said precut portions of the exposed layer into said preforming mold; and
- (g) ultraviolet generation means for exposing the precut portion to ultraviolet radiation through said preforming mold to activate the second photoinitiator and produce a rigid three-dimensional preform.
- 2. Apparatus for making a three-dimensional molded preform comprising:
- (a) means for applying a coat of a two-stage binder to a mat of glass fibers to coat the fibers without filling the interstices thereof, with a binder comprising a first constituent including a first photoinitiator which is responsive to visible light to produce free cross-linking radicals to provide a partial cure for the binder in which the binder has a viscosity sufficient to hold the glass fibers together so that the mat will be plastic and deformable, and a second constituent including a cationic-type second photoinitiator which is responsive to ultraviolet radiation to cure by producing cross-linking electrons so that the binder becomes rigid;
- (b) first means for exposing the binder-coated mat to visible light to activate the first photoinitiator of the first constituent;
- (c) an ultraviolet transparent preform mold which replicates the size and shape of the preform;
- (d) means for precutting the exposed mat into precut portions;
- (e) means for placing one of said precut portions in said mold;
- (f) means for pressing the precut portion in the mold into the size and shape of the preform to be formed;
- (g) second means for exposing the precut portion to ultraviolet radiation through the mold to activate the second photoinitiator of the second constituent and form a rigid preform;
- (h) means for removing the preform from the mold.
- 3. Apparatus for making a three-dimensional molded preform constructed in accordance with claim 2:
- wherein said means for applying the two-stage binder applies the binder in an amount in the range of 2% to 8% by weight of the glass fibers.
- 4. Apparatus for making a three-dimensional molded preform constructed in accordance with claim 2:
- wherein said first means for exposing the mat to visible light maintains said exposure until generated free radicals are all cross linked.
- 5. Apparatus for making a three-dimensional molded preform constructed in accordance with claim 2:
- wherein said means for applying the coating applies said coating to the glass fibers in the range of 1% to 12% by weight of the glass fibers.
- 6. Apparatus for making a three-dimensional preform constructed in accordance with claim 2:
- wherein said second means for exposing the mat to ultraviolet energy radiation applies ultraviolet energy radiation in the range of deep Uv (.apprxeq.200 nm) up to visible light (.apprxeq.450 nm).
- 7. Apparatus for making a three-dimensional molded preform constructed in accordance with claim 2:
- including supply means for supplying the binder to said applying means wherein the first photoinitiator of the binder is any one taken from a group consisting of Lupersol 256, Benzyl Peroxide, Tertiary Butyl Peroctoate and Tertiary Butyl Perbenzoate.
- 8. Apparatus for making a three-dimensional molded preform constructed in accordance with claim 2:
- including means for supplying the binder to said applying means wherein the second photoinitiator of the binder is any one taken from a group consisting of Irgacure 261, Cyracure UVE 6990 and Cyracure UVE 6974.
- 9. Apparatus for making a three-dimensional molded preform constructed in accordance with claim 2:
- wherein said means for applying includes a spray for applying the binder by spraying onto the fibers.
- 10. Apparatus for making a three-dimensional preform constructed in accordance with claim 2:
- including a compression means arranged at said first means to press the mat coated with said binder.
- 11. Apparatus for making a three-dimensional molded preform constructed in accordance with claim 10:
- wherein said compression means includes opposed rollers.
