This application belongs to the technical field of wireless communications, and in particular, relates to a UE capability change method, a terminal, and a network-side device.
Multi-SIM terminals can reside on multiple networks simultaneously, and there are multiple implementation manners for multi-SIM terminals. Some multi-SIM terminals can transmit and receive data simultaneously on multiple networks without affecting each other. Some multi-SIM terminals, although capable of residing on multiple networks simultaneously, may adopt a time division mode to reside on two networks, that is, residing on a network A to monitor paging of the network A for a period of time, and residing on a network B to monitor paging of the network B for a period of time; or connecting to the network A to receive and transmit data for a period of time, and receiving paging on the network B for a period of time; and or receiving data on the network A for a period of time, and establishing a connection or receiving and transmitting data on the network B for a period of time. Some multi-SIM terminals that support dual transmission and dual reception can simultaneously transmit and receive data on multiple networks on specific frequency bands without affecting each other. On some other frequency bands, the time division mode may be adopted to receive and transmit data on two networks.
In specific application, a multi-SIM terminal may need to transfer from a network A to a network B to perform tasks. For multi-SIM terminals that support multiple transmissions (Tx) or multiple receptions (Rx), while residing or maintaining a connected state on a network A, it may be necessary to utilize part of the resources such as Tx or Rx paths to perform tasks on a network B. However, due to the current capability or configuration of the terminal on the network A, the user equipment (UE) may not be able to utilize part of the resources to meet the multi-SIM task requirements on the network B. In view of the situation, there is a lack of corresponding solutions in the prior art.

The technical solutions in the embodiments of this application are clearly described in the following with reference to the accompanying drawings in the embodiments. Apparently, the described embodiments are merely some rather than all of the embodiments of this application. All other embodiments obtained by those of ordinary skill in the art based on the embodiments of this application fall within the protection scope of this application.
In the description and claims of this application, the terms such as “first” and “second” are used for distinguishing similar objects, rather than describing a specific sequence or order. It is to be understood that the terms used in such a way are exchangeable in a proper case, so that the embodiments of this application can be implemented in an order different from those shown or described herein. The objects distinguished by “first” and “second” are usually of the same class, and the number of the objects is not limited, for example, the number of the first object may be one or multiple. In addition, in the description and claims, “and/or” indicates at least one of the connected objects, and the character “/” generally indicates that the associated objects are in an “or” relationship.
It is worth noting that the technology described in the embodiments of this application is not limited to long term evolution (LTE)/LTE-advanced (LTE-A) systems, but may also be used in other wireless communication systems, such as code division multiple access (CDMA), time division multiple access (TDMA), frequency division multiple access (FDMA), orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA), and single-carrier frequency-division multiple access (SC-FDMA). The terms “system” and “network” in the embodiments of this application are often interchangeably used, and the described technology can be applied to the systems and radio technologies mentioned above, and can also be applied to other systems and radio technologies. The following describes a new radio (NR) system as an example, and the NR term is used in most of the following descriptions. However, these technologies can also be applied to applications other than the NR system, e.g., the 6th generation (6G) communication system.
The UE capability change method provided in the embodiments of this application will be described in detail below with reference to the accompanying drawings and through some embodiments and application scenarios thereof.
As shown in
S210: UE determines that a capability change is required and/or configuration preference.
In this embodiment of this application, a multi-SIM terminal may include multiple pieces of UE, which are referred to as Multi-SIM UE. It should be noted that the UE may be considered as a contract party. Multiple contract parties can be configured on a terminal device. A contract party may be represented by a subscriber identity module (SIM) card. One SIM card corresponds to a contract party of a network. The SIM card stores the identity of the contract party, that is, the UE identity, e.g., a subscription permanent identifier (SUPI), or an international mobile subscription identity (IMSI). Therefore, when multiple SIM cards are inserted or multiple pieces of electronic SIM card information are configured on a terminal, the terminal may form different UE with different contract parties.
In this embodiment of this application, the network-side device may initiate a capability transmission process to the UE in a connected state, thereby obtaining the wireless access capability information of the UE. For example, after receiving a UE capability enquiry message, the UE sends a UE capability information message. In a communication process, the UE determines that a capability change is required and/or configuration preference. For example, for multi-SIM terminals that support multiple Tx or Rx, the UE may need to utilize some Tx or Rx paths to perform tasks on a network B while residing or keeping in a connected state on a network A. To meet this requirement, the UE determines that a capability change is required and/or configuration preference.
S212: The UE sends a first request message, where the first request message is used for requesting a network-side device for the capability change and/or is used for sending configuration preference.
Optionally, the first request message may carry at least one of the following information from (1) to (4).
In one possible implementation of this embodiment of this application, the first request message may be sent via a UE assistance information message. In related technologies, in order to save power or prevent overheating, UE may send a preference indication in a UE assistance information message to a network. The network determines whether to change the configuration of the UE. For example, the UE recommends the network to configure fewer carriers, fewer MIMO layers, or longer DRX cycles. The network may adjust the configuration of the UE accordingly. Therefore, in this embodiment of this application, the UE assistance information message may be multiplexed for sending the first request message in the UE assistance information message to request a capability change and/or send configuration preference for the multi-SIM purpose.
In another possible implementation, the first request message may also be sent via a UE capability information message. In related technologies, the network-side device may initiate a capability transmission process to UE in a connected state, thereby obtaining the wireless access capability information of the UE. The UE sends a UE capability information message to the network in a case that the UE receives a UE capability enquiry message sent from the network-side device, and the UE capability information message may carry the UE capability information. In this embodiment of this application, the UE capability information message may be multiplexed for sending the first request message in the UE capability information message to request a capability change and/or send configuration preference for the multi-SIM purpose.
In another possible implementation of this embodiment of this application, the first request message may also be sent via a radio resource control (RRC) connection setup complete (RRC Setup Complete) message. That is, the first request message is sent in the RRC connection setup complete message sent to the network-side device in a case that the UE completes RRC connection setup with the network side.
In the above possible implementation, the RRC connection setup complete message carries first capability information of the UE, where the first capability information is different from second capability information, the second capability information is the most recently reported capability information of the UE, or the second capability information is the capability information reported during the UE registering a network, or the second capability information is the maximum capability information of the UE. For example, the second capability is 4 MIMO layers, and the first capability is 2 MIMO layers. Or, the second capability supports dual connectivity, while the first capability does not support dual connectivity.
In the above possible implementation, the capability information of the UE is the first capability information during a period in an RRC connected state corresponding to the RRC connection setup complete message. That is, the UE capability is the first capability during the period in the current RRC connected state and remains unchanged.
S214: The UE executes corresponding processing based on the response of the network-side device.
After sending the first request message to the network-side device, the UE executes corresponding processing based on the response of the network-side device to the first request message.
After receiving the first request message, the network-side device may respond to the first request message, and thus, in one possible implementation, step S214 may include:
In the above possible implementation, the response message may be an RRC reconfiguration message, which means that the network-side device reconfigures a terminal after receiving the first request message.
Alternatively, the response message may also be other messages, which can carry at least one of the following information:
In the above possible implementation, optionally, the UE applies the requested capability change and/or the sent configuration preference in a case that the UE executes corresponding processing based on the response message, and the response message carries the acceptance information. That is, the capability change requested and/or the configuration preference sent by the UE takes effect.
Alternatively, the UE executes a reconfiguration process based on the reconfiguration information or RRC reconfiguration message in a case that the response message carries the reconfiguration information or the response message is an RRC reconfiguration message.
Alternatively, the capability change requested and/or the configuration preference sent by the UE takes effect in a case that the UE receives the response message. That is, by default, the capability change and/or configuration preference takes effect after the UE receives the response message from the network.
In a possible implementation, the network-side device may be provided with a first timer, or a protocol stipulated first timer, and the UE monitoring the response messages sent from the network-side device may include: the UE starts the first timer after sending the first request message, where a duration of the first timer is configured by the first configuration message, or the duration of the first timer is predefined; and the UE monitors the response message sent from the network-side device during the duration of the first timer. That is, in the possible implementation, the UE monitors the response of the network-side device within a predefined time period after sending the first request message.
In the above possible implementation, the UE starting the first timer includes: the UE starts the first timer after sending the first request message in a case of determining that the network-side device needs to perform reconfiguration. That is, the UE starts the first timer to monitor the response of the network-side device in a case that the capability change and/or preference configuration requested by the first request message sent from the UE needs to be reconfigured by the network-side device.
Optionally, the UE determining that the network-side device needs to perform reconfiguration may include at least one of the following: the first request message includes reconfiguration indication information; the first request message includes the reconfiguration indication information and the reconfiguration indication information indicates that the network-side device needs to reconfigure the UE; the UE requests for a capability change; and the current configuration of the UE does not satisfy the preference configuration requested by the UE. For example, the capability should decrease after a UE capability change, but the current configuration is greater than the capability after the UE capability change, and thus the network-side device needs to reconfigure the UE.
Optionally, the UE is not allowed to send the first request message again during the duration of the first timer; or, the UE is not allowed to send a second request message for requesting a capability change and/or sending configuration preference during the duration of the first timer, where the second request message is different from the first request message. That is, the UE monitors response messages from the network during the duration of the first timer, and the UE cannot send the same first request message again during the duration of the first timer, or the UE cannot send the second request message for requesting a capability change and/or sending configuration preference.
In a possible implementation, after the first timer is started, the method further includes: the UE stops the first timer during the duration of the first timer in one of the following situations:
That is, the conditions for the UE to stop the first timer during the duration of the first timer include one of the following:
In a possible implementation, the UE executing corresponding processing based on the response of the network-side device further includes: the UE performs a first operation in a case that the first timer expires. For example, the UE stops the first timer in a case that before the first timer expires, the UE does not receive the response message from network-side device, or the received reconfiguration message or reconfiguration information does not satisfy the configuration preference of the UE.
Optionally, the first operation includes, but is not limited to, at least one of the following:
The above possible implementation presents a processing solution for the UE in a case that the network does not respond or the request of the UE is not satisfied after the UE requests a capability change or sends configuration preference for the multi-SIM purpose, thereby effectively perfecting negotiation of the capability change or configuration, and improving the network switching performance of multi-SIM UE.
In a possible implementation, the UE executes corresponding processing based on the response message in a case than a response message sent from the network-side device is detected by the UE before the first timer expires, and optionally, the executable processes include one of the following:
The above (2) and (3) present a processing method for the UE in a case that the network does not satisfy the request of the UE after the UE requests a capability change and/or sends configuration preference for the multi-SIM purpose, thereby effectively perfecting a solution for capability change and/or configuration negotiation, and improving the network switching performance of multi-SIM UE.
In a possible implementation, the network-side device may also send a first configuration message used for indicating whether the UE is allowed to send the first request message, that is, whether the UE is allowed to request a capability change and/or send configuration preference. Therefore, before S210, the method may further include: a first configuration message sent from the network-side device is received, where the first configuration message is used for indicating that the UE is allowed to send the first request message. The UE sends the first request message to the network-side device when a capability change is required and/or configuration preference after receiving the first configuration message.
Optionally, the first configuration message may include at least one of the following information:
Optionally, the first configuration message may be sent via a system information (SI) message or an RRC reconfiguration message. For example, the first configuration message is carried in OtherConfig IE of the RRC reconfiguration message.
In this embodiment of this application, a negotiation solution for capability change and/or configuration preference of multi-SIM UE is provided, so that the UE may execute corresponding processing based on the response of a network-side device after the UE requests a capability change or sends configuration preference for multi-SIM tasks. Also, processing operations for the UE in a case that the network does not respond or the request of the UE is not satisfied are provided, thereby effectively perfecting negotiation of the capability change or configuration, and improving the network switching performance of the multi-SIM UE.

In this embodiment of this application, the network-side device may respond to the first request message based on the operational situation of the network-side device. For example, the network-side device may send a response message to the UE, and the response message indicates acceptance of the first request message and/or carries reconfiguration information, or the network-side device may send a reconfiguration message to the UE. The reconfiguration information or reconfiguration message may or may not satisfy the configuration preference of the UE.
In a possible implementation, the first request message may carry at least one of the following information:
In a possible implementation, the configuration preference information includes at least one of the following:
In a possible implementation, the first request message is carried via one of the following messages:

Optionally, the capability information of the UE is the first capability information during the period in the RRC connected state corresponding to the RRC connection setup complete message.
In a possible implementation, the network-side device responding to the first request message includes:
In a possible implementation, before the network-side device receives the first request message sent from the UE, the method further includes: a first configuration message is sent to the UE, where the first configuration message is used for indicating whether the UE is allowed to send the first request message.
