Claims
- 1. An ultramicrotome tool comprising a diamond blade having a longitudinal axis, the blade including a first substantially planar surface substantially coplanar with a first naturally occurring crystal plane within the crystalline structure of the diamond and a second substantially planar surface substantially coplanar with a second naturally occurring crystal plane within the crystalline structure of the diamond, the first and second surfaces intersecting to define a cutting edge,
- a shank for holding the diamond blade, the shank having a longitudinal axis, and
- means for mounting the diamond blade on the shank to orient one of the first and second planar surfaces of the blade to be substantially parallel to the longitudinal axis of the shank.
- 2. The ultramicrotome tool of claim 1 wherein the first and second planar surfaces cooperate to define a dihedral included angle of about 45.degree. to 60.degree..
- 3. The ultramicrotome tool of claim 1, wherein the blade is a crystalline structure and at least one of the planar surfaces is substantially coplanar with a naturally occurring crystal plane within the crystalline structure.
- 4. The ultramicrotome tool of claim 3, wherein the cyrstalline structure is a diamond.
- 5. The ultramicrotome tool of claim 1, wherein the blade is a crystalline structure, the first planar surface is substantially coplanar with a first naturally occurring crystal plane within the crystalline structure, and the second surface is substantially coplanar with the second naturally occurring crystal plane within the crystalline structure.
- 6. The ultramicrotome tool of claim 5, wherein the crystalline structure is a diamond.
- 7. The ultramicrotome tool of claim 1 wherein the first surface of the diamond blade and a (111) crystal plane of the diamond blade are substantially coplanar.
- 8. The ultramicrotome tool of claim 1 wherein the second surface of the diamond blade and a (100) crystal plane of the diamond blade are sustantially coplanar.
- 9. The ultramicrotome tool of claim 1, wherein the first surface of the diamond blade and a (320) crystal plane of the diamond blade are substantially coplanar.
- 10. The ultramicrotome tool of claim 1, wherein the second planar surface of the diamond blade and a (111) crystal plane of the diamond blade are substantially coplanar.
- 11. An ultramicrotome tool for cutting a material specimen having a longitudinal axis, the material specimen being advanced in a direction along its longitudinal axis toward the ultramicrotome tool, the ultramicrotome tool comprising
- a base,
- a diamond blade including first and second surfaces intersecting to define a cutting edge, the first surface being substantially coplanar with a first naturally occurring crystal plane within the crystalline structure of the diamond blade, the second surface being substantially colanar with a second naturally occurring crystal plane within the crystalline structure of the diamond blade,
- a shank for holding the blade, the shank having a longitudinal axis, and
- means for mounting the blade-holding shank on the base so that the longitudinal axis of the shank is substantially orthogonal to the longitudinal axis of the material specimen.
- 12. The ultramicrotome tool of claim 11, wherein the first surface of the diamond blade and a (111) crystal plane of the diamond blade are substantially coplanar.
- 13. The ultramicrotome tool of claim 11, wherein the second surface of the diamond blade and a (100) crystal plane of the diamond blade are substantially coplanar.
- 14. The ultramicrotome tool of claim 11, wherein the first surface of the diamond blade and a (320) crystal plane of the diamond blade are substantially coplanar.
- 15. The ultramicrotome tool of claim 11, wherein the second planar surface of the diamond blade and a (111) crystal plane of the diamond blade are substantially coplanar.
- 16. The ultramicrotome tool of claim 11, further comprising means for rigidly mounting the blade on the shank to orient the longitudinal axis of the blade at a predetermined orientation angle in respect to the longitudinal axis of the shank.
- 17. The ultramicrotome tool of claim 16, wherein the blade is mounted on the shank simultaneously to orient the second surface at said predetermined orientation angle in respect to the longitudinal axis of the shank in the first surface in substantially parallel relation to the longitudinal axis of the shank.
- 18. An ultramicrotome tool comprising
- a blade having a longitudinal axis, the blade including a first substantially planar surface and a second substantially planar surface, the first and second surfaces intersecting to define a cutting edge,
- a shank for holding the blade, the shank having a longitudinal axis, and
- means for mounting the blade on the shank to orient the longitudinal axis of the blade at an angle other than zero degrees in respect to the longitudinal axis of the shank, wherein the blade is a crystalline structure and at least one of the planar surfaces is substantially coplanar with a naturally occurring crystal plane within the crystalline structure.
- 19. The ultramicrotome tool of claim 18, wherein the crystalline structure is a diamond.
- 20. An ultramicrotome tool comprising
- a blade having a longitudinal axis, the blade including a first sustantially planar surface and a second substantially planar surface, the first and second surfaces intersecting to define a cutting edge,
- a shank for holding the blade, the shank having a longitudinal axis, and
- means for mounting the blade on the shank to orient the longitudinal axis of the blade at an angle other than zero degrees in respect to the longitudinal axis of the shank, wherein the blade is a crystalline structure, the first planar surface is substantially coplanar with a first naturally occurring crystal plane within the crystalline structure, and the second surface is substantially coplanar with the second naturally occurring crystal plane within the crystalline structure.
- 21. The ultramicrotome tool of claim 20, wherein the crystalline structure is a diamond.
- 22. An ultramicrotome tool for cutting a material specimen having a longitudinal axis, the material specimen being advanced in a direction along its longitudinal axis toward the ultramicrotome tool, the ultramicrotome tool comprising
- a base,
- a blade including first and second surfaces intersecting to define a cutting edge,
- a shank for holding the blade, the shank having a longitudinal axis, and
- means for mounting the blade-holding shank on the base so that the longitudinal axis of the shank is substantially orthogonal to the longitudinal axis of the material specimen wherein the blade is a diamond and at least one of the surfaces is substantially coplanar with a naturally occurring crystal plane within the crystalline structure of the diamond.
- 23. The ultramicrotome tool of claim 22, wherein the cutting edge defines a line that is offset a predetermined distance in relation to the longitudinal axis of the blade.
- 24. An ultramicrotome tool comprising
- a blade having a longitudinal axis, the blade including a first substantially planar surface at an angle other than zero degrees in respect to the longitudinal axis of the blade and a second substantially planar surface in substantially spaced-apart parallel relation to the longitudinal axis of the blade, the first and second surfaces intersecting to define a cutting edge,
- a shank for holding the blade, the shank having a longitudinal axis, and
- means for rigidly mounting the blade on the shank to orient the longitudinal axis of the blade at a predetermined orientation angle other than zero degrees in respect to the longitudinal axis of the shank and simultaneously to orient the second substantially planar surface at said predetermined orientation angle in respect to the longitudinal axis of the shank and the first substantially planar surface in substantially parallel relation to the longitudinal axis of the shank, wherein the blade is a diamond and the first surface of the diamond blade and a (320) crystal plane of the diamond blade are substantially coplanar.
- 25. An ultramicrotome tool comprising
- a blade having a longitudinal axis, the blade including a first substantially planar surface at an angle other than zero degrees in respect to the longitudinal axis of the blade and a second substantially planar surface in substantially spaced-apart parallel relation to the longitudinal axis of the blade, the first and second surfaces intersecting to define a cutting edge,
- a shank for holding the blade, the shank having a longitudinal axis, and
- means for rigidly mounting the blade on the shank to orient the longitudinal axis of the blade at a predetermined orientation angle other than zero degrees in respect to the longitudinal axis of the shank and simultaneously to orient the second substantially planar surface at said predetermined orientation angle in respect to the longitudinal axis of the shank and the first substantially planar surface in substantially parallel relation to the longitudinal axis of the shank, wherein the blade is a diamond and the second surface of the diamond blade and a (111) crystal plane of the diamond blade are substantially coplanar.
