Claims
- 1. In an ultrasonic angioplasty device of the type wherein an elongate ultrasound transmission member has a proximal end attached to an ultrasound transducer and a distal end for applying ultrasonic energy to an occlusive lesion and a body extending between said proximal and distal ends, the improvement comprising:
- an enlarged distal head disposed on the distal end of the ultrasound transmission member such that said distal head is laterally displaced in relation to said body of said ultrasound transmission member; and
- at least one surface disruption in the distal head.
- 2. The improvement of claim 1 further comprising:
- said elongate ultrasound transmission member being bent near its distal end so that said distal head is laterally displaced in relation to said body of said ultrasound transmission member.
- 3. The improvement of claim 1 further comprising:
- said distal head is disposed on the distal end of said elongate ultrasound transmission member at a point off-center in relation to said distal head so that said distal head is laterally displaced in relation to said body of said ultrasound transmission member.
- 4. The improvement of claim 1 further comprising:
- said ultrasound transmission member and said distal head are rotatable.
- 5. The improvement of claim 1 further comprising:
- said distal head having a guide wire aperture formed therethrough for receiving a guide wire.
- 6. The improvement of claim 1 further comprising:
- said elongate ultrasound transmission member comprising a superelastic metal alloy.
- 7. The improvement of claim 1 further comprising:
- an elongate flexible catheter having a proximal end, a distal end, and at least one lumen extending longitudinally therethrough, wherein said elongate ultrasound transmission member extends through said lumen; and
- said elongate ultrasound transmission member is mounted within said lumen of said elongate flexible catheter such that said ultrasound transmission member is movable longitudinally in relation thereto so that said ultrasound transmission member may be advanced to extend beyond said distal end of said catheter and retracted in relation to said distal end of said catheter.
- 8. The improvement of claim 1 further comprising:
- an elongate flexible catheter having a proximal end, a distal end, and at least one lumen extending longitudinally therethrough, wherein said elongate ultrasound transmission member extends through said lumen;
- said lumen of said elongate catheter is larger than the diameter of said elongate ultrasound transmission member so that cooling fluid may be applied between the lumen wall and the elongate transmission member to dissipate heat from the ultrasound member; and said elongate catheter comprises a cooling fluid outflow port disposed at its distal end through which said cooling fluid may leave said lumen of the catheter.
- 9. In an ultrasonic angioplasty device of the type wherein an elongate ultrasound transmission member has a proximal end attached to an ultrasound transducer and a distal end for applying ultrasonic energy to an occlusive lesion and a body extending between said proximal and distal ends, the improvement comprising:
- an enlarged distal head on the distal end of the ultrasound transmission member; and
- at least one surface disruption in the distal head, wherein said surface disruption comprises a circumferential groove formed around the distal head.
- 10. The improvement of claim 9 further comprising:
- the enlarged distal head is disposed on the distal end of the ultrasound transmission member such that said distal head is laterally displaced in relation to said body of said ultrasound transmission member.
- 11. The improvement of claim 10 further comprising:
- said elongate ultrasound transmission member being bent near its distal end so that said distal head is laterally displaced in relation to said body of said ultrasound transmission member.
- 12. The improvement of claim 10 further comprising:
- said distal head is disposed on the distal end of said elongate ultrasound transmission member at a point off-center in relation to said distal head so that said distal head is laterally displaced in relation to said body of said ultrasound transmission member.
- 13. The improvement of claim 10 further comprising:
- said ultrasound transmission member and said distal head are rotatable.
- 14. The improvement of claim 10 further comprising:
- said distal head having a guide wire aperture formed therethrough for receiving a guide wire.
- 15. The improvement of claim 10 further comprising:
- said elongate ultrasound transmission member comprising a superelastic metal alloy.
- 16. The improvement of claim 10 further comprising:
- an elongate flexible catheter having a proximal end, a distal end, and at least one lumen extending longitudinally therethrough, wherein said elongate ultrasound transmission member extends through said lumen; and
- said elongate ultrasound transmission member is mounted within said lumen of said elongate flexible catheter such that said ultrasound transmission member is movable longitudinally in relation thereto so that said ultrasound transmission member may be advanced to extend beyond said distal end of said catheter and retracted in relation to said distal end of said catheter.
- 17. The improvement of claim 10 further comprising:
- an elongate flexible catheter having a proximal end, a distal end, and at least one lumen extending longitudinally therethrough, wherein said elongate ultrasound transmission member extends through said lumen;
- said lumen of said elongate catheter is larger than the diameter of said elongate ultrasound transmission member so that cooling fluid may be applied between the lumen wall and the elongate transmission member to dissipate heat from the ultrasound member; and
- said elongate catheter comprises a cooling fluid outflow port disposed at its distal end through which said cooling fluid may leave said lumen of the catheter.
- 18. In an ultrasonic angioplasty device of the type wherein an elongate ultrasound transmission member has a proximal end attached to an ultrasound transducer and a distal end for applying ultrasonic energy to an occlusive lesion, the improvement comprising:
- an enlarged distal head on the distal end of the ultrasound transmission member; and
- at least one surface disruption in the distal head, wherein said surface disruption comprises a plurality of dimples formed on the distal head.
- 19. The improvement of claim 18 further comprising:
- the enlarged distal head is disposed on the distal end of the ultrasound transmission member such that said distal head is laterally displaced in relation to said body of said ultrasound transmission member.
- 20. The improvement of claim 19 further comprising:
- said elongate ultrasound transmission member being bent near its distal end so that said distal head is laterally displaced in relation to said body of said ultrasound transmission member.
- 21. The improvement of claim 19 further comprising:
- said distal head is disposed on the distal end of said elongate ultrasound transmission member at a point off-center in relation to said distal head so that said distal head is laterally displaced in relation to said body of said ultrasound transmission member.
- 22. The improvement of claim 19 further comprising:
- said ultrasound transmission member and said distal head are rotatable.
- 23. The improvement of claim 19 further comprising:
- said distal head having a guide wire aperture formed therethrough for receiving a guide wire.
- 24. The improvement of claim 19 further comprising:
- said elongate ultrasound transmission member comprising a superelastic metal alloy.
- 25. The improvement of claim 19 further comprising:
- an elongate flexible catheter having a proximal end, a distal end, and at least one lumen extending longitudinally therethrough, wherein said elongate ultrasound transmission member extends through said lumen; and
- said elongate ultrasound transmission member is mounted within said lumen of said elongate flexible catheter such that said ultrasound transmission member is movable longitudinally in relation thereto so that said ultrasound transmission member may be advanced to extend beyond said distal end of said catheter and retracted in relation to said distal end of said catheter.
- 26. The improvement of claim 19 further comprising:
- an elongate flexible catheter having a proximal end, a distal end, and at least one lumen extending longitudinally therethrough, wherein said elongate ultrasound transmission member extends through said lumen;
- said lumen of said elongate catheter is larger than the diameter of said elongate ultrasound transmission member so that cooling fluid may be applied between the lumen wall and the elongate transmission member to dissipate heat from the ultrasound member; and
- said elongate catheter comprises a cooling fluid outflow port disposed at its distal end through which said cooling fluid may leave said lumen of the catheter.
- 27. An ultrasonic angioplasty apparatus, comprising:
- an elongate flexible catheter having a proximal end, a distal end, and at least one lumen extending longitudinally therethrough;
- an elongate ultrasound transmission member having a proximal end attached to an ultrasound transducer and a distal end for applying ultrasonic energy to an occlusive lesion and a body extending between said proximal and distal ends, wherein said elongate ultrasound transmission member extends through said lumen such that said ultrasound transmission member is movable longitudinally in relation thereto so that said ultrasound transmission member may be advanced to extend beyond said distal end of said catheter and retracted in relation to said distal end of said catheter and so that said ultrasound transmission member is rotatable; and
- an enlarged distal head disposed on the distal end of the ultrasound transmission member such that said distal head is movable longitudinally and rotatable with said ultrasound transmission member and such that said distal head is laterally displaced in relation to said body of said ultrasound transmission member, wherein said distal head comprises at least one surface disruption.
- 28. The apparatus of claim 27 wherein:
- said elongate ultrasound transmission member is bent near its distal end so that said distal head is laterally displaced in relation to said body of said ultrasound transmission member.
- 29. The apparatus of claim 27 wherein:
- said distal head is disposed on the distal end of said elongate ultrasound transmission member at a point off-center in relation to said distal head so that said distal head is laterally displaced in relation to said body of said ultrasound transmission member.
- 30. The apparatus of claim 27 wherein said elongate ultrasound transmission member comprises a superelastic metal alloy.
- 31. The apparatus of claim 27 wherein:
- said lumen of said elongate catheter is larger than the diameter of said elongate ultrasound transmission member so that cooling fluid may be applied between the lumen wall and the elongate transmission member to dissipate heat from the ultrasound member; and
- said elongate catheter comprises a cooling fluid outflow port disposed at its distal end through which said cooling fluid may leave said lumen of the catheter.
- 32. The apparatus of claim 27 wherein said distal head has a guide wire aperture formed therethrough for receiving a guide wire.
