An apparatus, for examining a body by means of ultrasonic energy, including: ultrasonic transducer means comprising at least one transmitting transducer, arranged to direct ultrasonic energy into a region of the body from a plurality of different dispositions therearound; at least one receiving transducer, which may also be the transmitting transducer, arranged to receive ultrasonic energy reflected from locations in the body to provide, for each of said positions of the transmitting transducer, at least one set of output signals representing integrals of reflection of said energy towards the receiving transducer for respective lines of reflecting locations spaced at different distances from the transmitting transducer, wherein the propagation times to the respective locations on any one line are the same; means for deriving from the output signals of each such set a modified output signal for each said line by combining, according to a predetermined weighting function, a proportion of the respective output signal for said line with proportions of the output signals for a predetermined number of lines on each side of said line along a given one of said directions; a data store representing said region and having a matrix of storage locations, one for each of a plurality of elements of the body in said region; and means for distributing among the storage locations, corresponding to elements intersected by each line of reflecting locations, the modified output signal for the respective line or a signal derived therefrom.
- 3. An apparatus, for examining a body by means of ultrasonic energy, including: ultrasonic transducer means comprising at least one transducer, arranged to direct ultrasonic energy into a region of the body from a plurality of different positions disposed substantially in a circle about the body and to receive ultrasonic energy reflected from locations in the body to provide, for each of said positions of the transducer, at least one set of output signals representing line integrals of reflection of said energy towards the transducer for respective lines of reflecting locations where the locations on each one line are at the same distance from the transducer and the different lines are spaced in distance from the transducer; means for deriving from the output signals, for one such set, a modified output signal for each said line by convolving the output signals of the set with a predetermining function; a data store representing said region and having a matrix of storage locations, one for each of a plurality of elements of the body in said region; and means for distributing the modified output signals to the storage locations corresponding to elements intersected by the respective lines of reflecting locations to provide a representation of reflectivity of the ultrasonic energy in the region.
- 4. A method of examining a body by means of ultrasonic energy, including the steps of:

- (b) receiving the ultrasonic energy after reflection at reflecting locations within the region and measuring the intensity of the energy received after different propagation times;
- (c) forming line integral values of reflection from said measurements of intensity, where each line integral value of reflection results from measuring the intensity of the energy received from a line of reflecting locations for which the propagation time is substantially the same,
- (d) notionally defining a matrix of elements in the body,
- (e) distributing to all elements, intersected by a chosen line of reflecting locations, a value related to the line integral values associated with that line together with contributions derived from other line integral values for which the propagation time is different; and
- (f) repeating step (c) for sufficient lines of reflecting locations intersecting within said region to provide a representation of the two-dimensional distribution of reflectivity of the ultrasonic energy within the region.
