Claims
- 1. A handpiece for an ultrasonic tool comprising a transducer to produce ultrasonic vibrations, said transducer interposed between an acoustical concentrator and a bulk head, said transducer comprising at least two piezo-electric washers interposed between a front block and a heel slug with a central bolt passing through aligned holes in said washers and interconnecting said front block and said heel slug to compress said washers therebetween, said central bolt including an isolation region positioned between said bulk head and said heel slug, said isolation region extending proximally beyond an end of said heel slug to said bulk head at a distance from said heel slug, said isolation region having a transverse cross-sectional area perpendicular to a longitudinal axis of said handpiece no greater than about one-tenth of the transverse cross-sectional area of said heel slug.
- 2. The handpiece of claim 1, wherein a transition from between said heel slug and said isolation region is located proximate to an anti-node of said vibrations.
- 3. The handpiece of claim 1, wherein said distance between said heel slug and said bulk head is equal to about 1/16 to about 1/8 of a wavelength of said vibrations.
- 4. The handpiece of claim 1, wherein said central bolt extends proximally beyond said bulk head for a distance equal to about 1/4 of a wavelength of said vibrations.
- 5. The handpiece of claim 1, further comprising insulating material that separates said central bolt and said washers.
- 6. The handpiece of claim 1, further comprising an annular bulkhead connected to an end of said central bolt and supporting a casing of said handpiece, in which said annular bulkhead is sealed hermetically to said outer casing, said annular bulkhead and said outer casing forming a solid ground connection.
- 7. The handpiece of claim 1, further comprising a lumen located generally about said longitudinal axis.
- 8. The handpiece of claim 7, in which said lumen extends along substantially the entire length of said handpiece.
- 9. The handpiece of claim 1, wherein the cross sectional area of said isolation region transitions abruptly to the cross sectional area of said heel slug.
- 10. The handpiece of claim 1, wherein the control bolt additionally comprises a bulk head support shaft, said support shaft adjoining said isolation region at a proximal end of said isolation region.
- 11. The handpiece of claim 1, wherein said isolation region has a transverse cross-sectional area perpendicular to a longitudinal axis of said handpiece no greater than about one-twentififth of the transverse cross-sectional area of said heel slug.
