Claims
- 1. The method of cutting a food item into separate portions and inserting dividers between adjacent portions, in which a cutting blade during a first movement toward the food item is ultrasonically energized to cut the food item, the blade is then withdrawn while a divider sheet is inserted between the blade and the food item, and thereafter the blade is again driven toward the food item to fold the divider sheet and to insert the thus-folded divider sheet into the cut between the two now separate portions of the food item.
- 2. The method of claim 1 wherein in its second movement, after inserting the divider sheet into the food item, the blade before being retracted is also ultrasonically energized so as to effectively disengage the blade from the divider sheet.
- 3. The method of claim 1 wherein the cutting blade is selected to be integrally formed of titanium with a thickness of about one-fourth inch, and is made to vibrate at a frequency not less than about 19,500 Hertz.
- 4. The method of claim 1 wherein a platform is utilized to support the divider in a horizontal position, a pair of cams associated with the platform are spaced apart during the first movement of the blade through the divisible platform to cut into the food item, the cams are placed in abutting relationship and the divider sheet is supported upon them above the food item prior to commencement of a second downward movement of the blade, and the cams are again separated so that the blade may pick up the divider sheet and carry it into the previously formed cut in the food item.
- 5. The method of cutting a food item into separate portions and then inserting dividers between adjacent portions, comprising the steps of:selecting a cutting blade that, when ultrasonically vibrated, is capable of cutting the food item across a major diameter; supporting the food item in a horizontal position; applying ultrasonic energy to the blade, and while it is thus energized driving the blade in a first downward movement into the exposed upper surface of the food item to cut the food item in two; withdrawing the blade from the cut until the cutting edge of the blade is spaced vertically away from the food item, while also maintaining support of the now-separated parts of the food item; selecting a divider sheet and moving it horizontally into the space between the blade edge and the food item; then driving the blade in a second downward movement toward the food item so that the cutting edge of the blade engages the divider sheet immediately above the cut, and also causes the divider sheet to become folded along a line immediately underneath the cutting edge of the blade as the blade moves downward; and continuing the second downward movement of the blade to drive divider sheet into position between two adjacent portions of the food item.
- 6. The method of claim 5 wherein ultrasonic energy is applied to the blade during at least the latter part of its second downward movement, to disengage the blade from the divider sheet.
