Claims
- 1. A non-photochromic R.sub.2 O--B.sub.2 O.sub.3 --SiO.sub.2 glass which contains a precipitated cuprous or cuprous-cadmium halide crystal phase and has a sharp spectral cutoff at about 400 nm, the glass composition consisting essentially of, in cation percent, 35-73% SiO.sub.2, 15-45% B.sub.2 O.sub.3, 0-12% Al.sub.2 O.sub.3, the Al.sub.2 O.sub.3 being less than 10% when the SiO.sub.2 is over 55%, 0-12% Li.sub.2 O, 0-20% Na.sub.2 O, 0-12% K.sub.2 O, the Li.sub.2 O+Na.sub.2 O+K.sub.2 O being 4.75-20%, 0-5% CaO+BaO+SrO, 0.125-1.0% Cu.sub.2 O, 0-1% CdO, 0-5% ZrO.sub.2, 0-0.75% SnO.sub.2, 0-1% As.sub.2 O.sub.3 and/or Sb.sub.2 O.sub.3, the glass containing 0-1.75% Cl, 0-1.0% Br, 0.25-2.0% Cl+Br and 0-2% F, the contents of Cl, Br, and F being in percent by weight of the total content of the glass composition, and having an R-value, calculated in mole percent, of 0.15-0.45, the R-value not exceeding 0.30, except as the glass composition meets at least one condition selected from the group: up to 12 cation % Li.sub.2 O, less than 10 cation % Al.sub.2 O.sub.3, at least 0.3 cation % Cu.sub.2 O and 0.50-2.0% Cl+Br.
- 2. A glass in accordance with claim 1 wherein the glass contains ZrO.sub.2, in an amount effective to increase the refractive index of the glass.
- 3. A glass in accordance with claim 1 wherein the glass contains CaO+BaO+SrO in an amount effective to increase the refractive index of the glass.
- 4. A glass in accordance with claim 1 wherein the glass contains Li.sub.2 O in an amount effective to provide a sharp UV cutoff at 400 nm.
- 5. A glass in accordance with claim 1 wherein the glass contains 0.125-0.5 cation % Cu.sub.2 O, the amount present being effective to provide a sharp UV cutoff at 400 nm.
- 6. A glass in accordance with claim 1 wherein the glass has an R-value less than that sufficient to inhibit precipitation of a cuprous chloride phase in the glass.
- 7. A glass in accordance with claim 1 wherein the glass contains 2-12% Al.sub.2 O.sub.3, the amount present being insufficient to be deleterious to UV absorption.
- 8. A glass in accordance with claim 5 wherein the Cu.sub.2 O content is 0.2-0.5 cation percent.
- 9. A glass in accordance with claim 1 wherein the content of Cl+Br is 0.5-1.5% by weigh of the total content of the glass composition.
- 10. A glass in accordance with claim 1 wherein the glass has no fixed tint and its composition consists essentially of 40-70% SiO.sub.2, 20-35% B.sub.2 O.sub.3, 2-10% Al.sub.2 O.sub.3, 8-20% R.sub.2 O selected from 0-12% Li.sub.2 O, O-20% Na.sub.2 O and 0-12% K.sub.2 O, 0.2-0.5% Cu.sub.2 O and Cl and/or Br, the content of Cl and/or Br being 0.5-1.5% by weight of the total content of the glass composition.
- 11. A glass in accordance with claim 1 containing up to 1% of a transition metal oxide whereby a fixed tint is imparted to the glass.
- 12. A glass in accordance with claim 1 containing up to 2% of an oxide selected from the group consisting of TiO.sub.2, Nb.sub.2 O.sub.3, and PbO, and/or up to 0.5% of an oxide selected from the group consisting of WO.sub.3 and MoO.sub.3, whereby refractive index is enhanced and a fixed tint is imparted to the glass.
- 13. A glass in accordance with claim 1 wherein a portion of the copper content is in the cupric state, the amount of copper in the cupric state being sufficient to impart a fixed tint to the glass.
- 14. A glass in accordance with claim 1 wherein a portion of the copper content is in a colloidal state, the amount of copper in the colloidal state being sufficient to impart a fixed tint to the glass.
