Claims
- 1. A device for clamping and cutting an umbilical cord, said device comprising:
a first shell; a second shell movably connected to said first shell; a first blade depending from said first shell; a first cutting support depending from said second shell; a first clamping member depending from said first shell; a second blade depending from said first shell; a second cutting support depending from said second shell; a second clamping member depending from said first shell; a first removable clamp engageable with and removable from said first and second shells; and a second removable clamp engageable with and removable from said first and second shells; wherein, by closing movement of said first and second shells, said first and second removable clamps compress the umbilical cord, said first and second clamping members compress the umbilical cord in cooperation with said second shell, and said first and second blades sever the umbilical cord in cooperation with said first and second cutting supports, respectively.
- 2. A device for clamping and cutting an umbilical cord, said device comprising:
a first shell; a second shell movably connected to said first shell; a blade depending from said first shell; a cutting support depending from said second shell; a first removable clamp engageable with and removable from said first and second shells; and a second removable clamp engageable with and removable from said first and second shells; wherein, by closing movement of said first and second shells, said first and second removable clamps compress the umbilical cord and said blade severs the umbilical cord in cooperation with said cutting support.
- 3. A device for clamping and cutting an umbilical cord, said device comprising:
a cutter having a first shell and a second shell movably connected to said first shell; at least one cutting support depending from said second shell; at least one blade depending from said first shell for severing the umbilical cord in cooperation with said at least one cutting support; a first clamping member for compressing the umbilical cord on a first side of said at least one blade in cooperation with said first and second shells; and a second clamping member for compressing the umbilical cord on a second side of said at least one blade in cooperation with said first and second shells; wherein at least one of said first and second clamping members comprises a removable clamp that is engageable with and removable from said first and second shells.
- 4. The device of claim 3 further comprising a blood collection reservoir.
- 5. The device of claim 4 further comprising a port for providing access to said blood collection reservoir from outside said device.
- 6. The device of claim 5 wherein said port comprises a Luer connector.
- 7. The device of claim 4 wherein said blood collection reservoir is at least partially formed by said at least one cutting support.
- 8. The device of claim 4 wherein said blood collection reservoir is removable from said device.
- 9. The device of claim 4 wherein said blood collection reservoir comprises a plurality of compartments.
- 10. The device of claim 4 wherein said blood collection reservoir comprises at least one surface coated with a diagnostic substance that reacts with blood.
- 11. The device of claim 4 wherein said blood collection reservoir comprises a diagnostic paper sensitive to blood.
- 12. The device of claim 4 further comprising a capillary conduit in liquid communication with said blood collection reservoir, said capillary conduit being accessible from outside said device.
- 13. The device of claim 3 wherein at least one of said first and second shells comprises at least one hole for providing needle access to the umbilical cord.
- 14. The device of claim 3 wherein said cutter and said removable clamp each comprises at least one coordinated identifier.
- 15. The device of claim 14 wherein said at least one coordinated identifier comprises a color.
- 16. The device of claim 14 wherein said at least one coordinated identifier comprises a number.
- 17. The device of claim 14 wherein said at least one coordinated identifier comprises a letter.
- 18. The device of claim 3 wherein said device comprises two removable clamps, each of said two removable clamps having at least one coordinated identifier.
- 19. The device of claim 18 wherein said at least one coordinated identifier comprises a color.
- 20. The device of claim 18 wherein said at least one coordinated identifier comprises a number.
- 21. The device of claim 18 wherein said at least one coordinated identifier comprises a letter.
- 22. A device for clamping and cutting an umbilical cord, said device comprising:
a first shell; a second shell movably connected to said first shell; a cutting support depending from said second shell; a blade depending from said first shell for severing the umbilical cord in cooperation with said cutting support, said blade having a first side and a second side; a clamping member depending from said first shell for compressing the umbilical cord on said first side of said blade in cooperation with said second shell; and a band engageable with and releasable from said first and second shells for compressing the umbilical cord on said second side of said blade.
- 23. The device of claim 22 wherein said band is biased to be self-winding upon release from said first and second shells.
- 24. The device of claim 22 wherein said band is plastically deformable.
- 25. An umbilical cord clamp comprising:
a clamp body having an arcuate clamping surface; an arcuate strap movably connected to said clamp body; and a closure for fastening said strap to said clamp body with the umbilical cord compressed between said clamping surface and said strap, said closure being openable.
- 26. The umbilical cord clamp of claim 25 wherein said closure comprises a hemostat-like closure.
- 27. The umbilical cord clamp of claim 25 wherein said closure comprises at least one nib that cooperates with at least one recess.
- 28. The umbilical cord clamp of claim 27 wherein said closure further comprises at least one squeezable finger grip for opening said closure.
- 29. The umbilical cord clamp of claim 27 wherein said closure further comprises at least one flexible tab for opening said closure.
- 30. A device for clamping and cutting an umbilical cord, said device comprising:
a first shell; a second shell movably connected to said first shell; a blade depending from said first shell; a cutting support depending from said second shell; a first clamping member depending from said first shell; a second clamping member depending from said first shell; said second clamping member being spaced apart from said first clamping member; and a removable clamp engageable with and removable from said first and second shells; wherein, by closing movement of said first and second shells, said first and second clamping members and said removable clamp compress the umbilical cord and said blade severs the umbilical cord in cooperation with said cutting support.
