Claims
- 1. An apparatus comprising:
- a shaft comprising a handle end and a canopy end;
- a canopy comprising a plurality of extension ribs, the ribs having a shaft end pivotally connected to the canopy end of the shaft and extending from the shaft to outer rib ends, and a canopy cover supported on the extension ribs and extending radially from the shaft to the outer rib ends, a shaft section and an outer rib section, there being at least one multi-position canopy rib having at least one multi-position rib hinge between the shaft section and the outer rib section, said canopy having a plurality of sections;
- an actuating means for moving the canopy between:
- a) an closed position where all of said ribs are closed and
- b) middle position where said outer rib section is folded towards said shaft end and said canopy ribs are extended
- c) an opened position where all of the ribs are fully opened;
- means to latch the umbrella in said middle position;
- means to latch the umbrella in the opened position wherein in said middle position, a section of said canopy is closed while other sections or said canopy are extended; and
- means to fasten the canopy when opened in the middle position in the inside windshield of an automobile.
- 2. The apparatus as recited in claim 1 wherein the automobile has a rear view mirror and the means to fasten is a strap on the top of the canopy disposed to removably connect the canopy to the rear view mirror of the automobile.
- 3. The apparatus as recited in claim 2 wherein the multi-position rib hinge further comprises:
- a hinge body;
- a restricter bar connected at a restricter bar hinge end to the hinge body at the hinge pivot, and connected to shaft section of the multi-position rib through a rotating slide, the rotating slide being capable of rotating about an axis through the rib and translating along the rib;
- a stop means between the rotating slide and the hinge end to limit movement of the restricter bar toward the hinge;
- a hinge piston bar connected to the hinge body at the piston pivot, and connected to the shaft section of the multi-position rib through a hinge piston bar housing coaxial to the rib; and
- a hinge push bar interconnected between the shaft slide and the hinge piston bar.
- 4. The apparatus as recited in claim 3 wherein the hinge push bar is connected at one end to the hinge piston bar.
- 5. The apparatus as recited in claim 3 wherein the hinge push bar is pivotally connected at an opposite end to a push bar slide, the push bar slide capable of translating along the rib.
- 6. The apparatus as recited in claim 5 further comprising a push bar strut pivotally connected between the shaft slide and the push bar slide.
- 7. The apparatus as recited in claim 3 wherein the push bar strut has an axial extension means.
- 8. The apparatus as recited in claim 1 wherein the automobile has a front seat and the means to fasten is the umbrella shaft pressed against the front seat of the automobile.
- 9. An apparatus
- a shaft comprising a handle end and a canopy end;
- a canopy comprising a plurality of extension ribs, the ribs having a shaft end pivotally connected to the canopy end of the shaft and extending from the shaft to outer rib ends, and a canopy cover supported on the extension ribs and extending radially from the shaft to the outer rib ends, a shaft section and an outer rib section, there being at least one multi-position canopy rib having at least one multi-position rib hinge between the shaft section and the outer rib section, said canopy having a plurality of sections;
- an actuating means for moving the canopy between:
- a) an closed position where all of said ribs are closed and
- b) middle position where said outer rib section is folded towards said shaft end and said canopy ribs are extended
- c) an opened position where all of the ribs are fully opened;
- means to latch the umbrella in said middle position; and
- means to latch the umbrella in the opened position wherein in said middle position, a section of said canopy is closed while other sections or said canopy are extended wherein said actuating means for moving said canopy means comprises:
- the shaft having a top and a rib control strut pivotally connected to the shaft canopy end at a strut shaft end, and having a strut rib end pivotally connected to each of said ribs;
- a shaft slide disposed to slide axially along the shaft, the shaft slide having a slide top facing the shaft canopy end, and a movable slide bottom which can be positioned and latched at the lower or upper end of the shaft slide;
- a push bar slide disposed to slide along said multi-position ribs;
- a push bar strut pivotally connected to the push bar slide at a strut rib slide end and pivotally connected to the shaft slide bottom at a strut shaft slide end;
- the means to latch said multi-position rib in said middle position being the latching of the shaft slide bottom in its lower position on the shaft slide;
- the means to latch said multi-position rib in said opened position being the latching of the shaft slide bottom in its upper position on the shaft slide; and
- a push bar connected to the push bar slide on one end and to the hinge piston bar on the opposite end of sufficient length to cause the multi-position hinge to close or partially close the rib portion which extends toward the multi-position hinge, and to cause the portion of the multi-position rib from the hinge to the end of the rib to be extended with the multi-position rib hinge opened upon the slide bottom being latched at the opened position.
- 10. The apparatus as recited in claim 9 wherein the multi-position rib hinge further comprises:
- a means to rotate at least partially around a radial axis of the shaft end; and
- a means to rotate at an angle to the plane end section radially to the shaft end to open and close the end section.
