Claims
- 1. An undercarriage assembly for supporting and propelling a mechanism, comprising:
- an elongate hollow load-bearing frame adapted for connection to the mechanism;
- at least three axle members each having a wheel receiving member at one end thereof;
- at least three wheel members each mounted on and secured to the wheel receiving end of one of the axle members;
- means rotatably supporting the axle members at longitudinally spaced points along the frame with each of the axle members extending through the frame and being rotatably supported in opposite sides of the frame;
- the middle wheel member extending below a plane lying tangent to the bottoms of the endmost wheel members to facilitate skid steering of the mechanism;
- transmission means including sprockets and chains positioned within the frame and drivingly interconnecting at least two of the axle members; and
- drive means including a motor mounted on the frame and operably connected to the transmission means for actuation thereof whereby the drive means and the transmission means cause concurrent rotation of the interconnected axle members.
- 2. A detachable undercarriage assembly, comprising:
- an elongate hollow load-bearing frame;
- at least three axle members each having a wheel receiving member at one end thereof;
- at least three wheel members each mounted on and secured to the wheel receiving end of one of the axle members;
- means rotatably supporting the axle members at spaced points along the frame with each of the axle members extending through the frame;
- the middle wheel member extending below a plane lying tangent to the bottoms of the endmost wheel members;
- a plurality of sprocket means each positioned within the frame and each mounted on and secured to one of the axle members;
- chain means mounted within the frame and constrained around the sprocket means to drivingly interconnect all of the axle members;
- motor means mounted on the frame;
- first drive sprocket means mounted for rotation by the motor means;
- second drive sprocket means mounted on one of the axle members;
- drive chain means constrained around the two drive sprocket means and thereby drivingly connecting said one of the axle members to the output of the motor means for rotation under the action thereof;
- said chain means and said sprocket means causing concurrent rotation of all of the axle means; and
- brake means positioned between the motor means and the first drive sprocket means for selectively arresting rotation of the motor means whereby the chain means and the sprocket means concurrently arrest rotation of the axle members.
- 3. An undercarriage assembly for supporting and propelling a mechanism, comprising:
- an elongate hollow frame adapted for connection to the mechanism;
- at least three axle means each extending to wheel receiving and supporting means;
- at least three wheel members each mounted on and secured to the wheel receiving and supporting means of one of the axle means;
- means rotatably supporting the axle means on the frame at longitudinally spaced points along the frame with each of the axle means extending through the frame and being rotatably supported in opposite sides of the frame;
- the center axle means being rotatable about an axis positioned substantially below a plane extending through the rotational axes of the two endmost axle means so that skid steering of the mechanism is facilitated;
- a plurality of sprocket means each positioned within the frame and each connected to one of the axle means for rotation therewith;
- chain means positioned within the frame and constrained around the sprocket means whereby at least two of the axle means are drivingly interconnected;
- drive means including a motor mounted on the frame and operably connected to one of the axle means for effecting rotation thereof; and
- said chain means and said sprocket means effecting rotation of the remaining axle means in response to rotation of said one of the axle means under the action of the drive means.
- 4. The undercarriage assembly according to claim 3 wherein the elongate hollow frame is rectangular in cross section and is comprised of structural members around its entire periphery and along its entire length so as to facilitate the attachment of the mechanism at any point thereon.
- 5. The undercarriage assembly according to claim 3 further including a fourth axle means, and wherein the center two axle means are mounted for rotation about axes lying in a plane positioned substantially below a plane extending through the rotational axes of the endmost two axle means and thereby facilitating skid steering of the mechanism.
- 6. The undercarriage assembly according to claim 3 wherein the means rotatably supporting the axle means comprises bearing means mounted on opposite sides of the frame for rotatably supporting the axle means with the axle means extending through the frame.
- 7. The undercarriage assembly according to claim 3 wherein each of the axle means extends through one of the sprocket means.
- 8. The undercarriage assembly according to claim 7 wherein the chain means comprises a plurality of chains each constrained around sprocket means mounted on an adjacent pair of axle means.
- 9. The undercarriage assembly according to claim 3 wherein the drive means includes motor means drivingly connected to one of the axle means for effecting rotation thereof.
- 10. The undercarriage assembly according to claim 9 wherein the drive means further includes first drive sprocket means mounted for rotation by the motor, second drive sprocket means mounted on said one of the axle means, and chain means constrained around the two drive sprocket means for effecting rotation of said one of the axle means under the action of the motor.
- 11. The undercarriage assembly according to claim 10 wherein the motor is of the hydraulic type.
- 12. The undercarriage assembly according to claim 10 wherein the motor means is of the electric type.
- 13. The undercarriage assembly according to claim 3 further including brake means mounted on one of the axle means for selective actuation to arrest rotation of said axle means whereby the chain means and the sprocket means concurrently arrest rotation of the remaining axle means.
- 14. The undercarriage assembly according to claim 3 further including means for selectively varying the positioning of one of the axle means and thereby positioning all of the axle means for rotation in the same plane and thereby stabilizing the positioning of the mechanism.
- 15. The undercarriage assembly of claim 3 wherein the frame comprises a lubricant reservoir whereby said chain means and said sprocket means are continuously operated in a lubricant bath.
- 16. A detachable undercarriage assembly for supporting and propelling a mechanism, comprising:
- an elongate hollow frame adapted for connection to the mechanism;
- at least three axle means each extending to wheel receiving and supporting means;
- at least three wheel members each mounted on and secured to the wheel receiving and supporting means of one of the axle means;
- means rotatably supporting the axle means on the frame;
- the center axle means being rotatable about an axis positioned substantially below a plane extending through the rotational axis of the two endmost axle means so that skid steering of the mechanism is facilitated;
- a plurality of sprocket means each positioned within the frame and each connected to one of the axle means for rotation therewith;
- chain means positioned within the frame and constrained around the sprocket means whereby at least two of the axle means are drivingly interconnected;
- drive means operably connected to one of the axle means for effecting rotation thereof;
- said chain means and said sprocket means effecting rotation of the remaining axle means in response to rotation of said one of the axle means under the action of the drive means; and
- brake means mounted between the drive means and the axle means to which said drive means is connected for selective actuation to arrest rotation of said drive means whereby the chain means and the sprocket means concurrently arrest rotation of the axle means.
- 17. A detachable undercarriage assembly for supporting and propelling a mechanism, comprising:
- an elongate hollow frame adapted for connection to the mechanism;
- at least three axle means each extending to wheel receiving and supporting means;
- at least three wheel members each mounted on and secured to a wheel receiving end of one of the axle means outside said frame;
- means rotatably supporting the axle means at longitudinally spaced points on the frame with each of the axle means extending through and being rotatably supported on opposite sides of the frame;
- the center axle means being rotatable about an axis lying in a plane extending through the rotational axes of the two endmost axle means and the center wheel member having a diameter substantially larger than the diameters of the endmost wheel members thereby facilitating skid steering of the mechanism;
- a plurality of sprocket means each positioned within the frame and each connected to an axle means for rotation therewith;
- chain means positioned within the frame and constrained around the sprocket means on the middle axle means and at least one of the endmost axle means whereby at least two of the axle means are drivingly interconnected;
- drive means operably connected to one of the axle means for effecting rotation thereof; and
- said chain means and said sprocket means effecting rotation of the remaining interconnected axle means in response to rotation of said one of the axle means under the action of the drive means.
- 18. The undercarriage assembly according to claim 17 wherein the elongate hollow frame is rectangular in cross section and is comprised of structural members around its entire periphery and along its entire length so as to facilitate the attachment of the mechanism at any point thereon.
- 19. The undercarriage assembly according to claim 17 further including a fourth axle means, and wherein the center two axle means are mounted for rotation about axes lying in a plane extending through the rotational axes of the endmost two axle means and the center two wheel members having diameters substantially larger than the diameters of the endmost wheel members thereby facilitating skid steering of the mechanism.
- 20. The undercarriage assembly according to claim 17 wherein the means rotatably supporting the axle means comprises bearing means mounted on opposite sides of the frame for rotatably supporting the axle means with the axle means extending through the frame.
- 21. The undercarriage assembly according to claim 17 wherein each of the axle means extends through one of the sprocket means.
- 22. The undercarriage assembly according to claim 21 wherein the chain means comprises a plurality of chains each constrained around sprocket means mounted on an adjacent pair of axle means.
- 23. The undercarriage assembly according to claim 17 wherein the drive means includes motor means drivingly connected

The undercarriage assembly according to claim 23 wherein the drive means further includes first drive sprocket means mounted for rotation by the motor means, second drive sprocket means mounted on said one of the axle means, and chain means constrained around the two drive sprocket means for effecting rotation of said one of the axle means under the action of the motor means.
- 25. The undercarriage assembly according to claim 24 wherein the motor means is of the hydraulic type.
- 26. The undercarriage assembly according to claim 24 wherein the motor means is of the electric type.
- 27. The undercarriage assembly according to claim 17 further including brake means mounted on one of the axle means for selective actuation to arrest rotation of said axle means whereby the chain means and the sprocket means concurrently arrest rotation of the remaining axle means.
- 28. The undercarriage assembly according to claim 17 further including brake means mounted between the drive means and the axle means to which said drive means is connected for selective actuation to arrest rotation of said drive means whereby the chain means and the sprocket means concurrently arrest rotation of the axle means.
- 29. The undercarriage assembly of claim 17 wherein the frame comprises a lubricant reservoir whereby said chain means and said sprocket means are continuously operated in a lubricant bath.
- 30. An undercarriage assembly for supporting and propelling a mechanism, comprising:
- an elongate hollow load-bearing frame adapted for connection to the mechanism;
- at least three axle members each having a wheel receiving member at one end thereof;
- at least three wheel members each mounted on and secured to a wheel receiving end of an axle member outside said frame;
- means rotatably supporting the axle members at longitudinally spaced points along the frame with each of the axle members extending through the frame and being rotatably supported in opposite sides of said frame;
- the middle wheel member extending below a plane lying tangent to the bottoms of the endmost wheel members to facilitate skid steering of the mechanism;
- transmission means positioned within the frame for drivingly interconnecting the middle axle member with at least one of the endmost axle members; and
- drive means operably connected to the transmission means for actuation thereof whereby the drive means and the transmission means cause concurrent rotation of the interconnected axle members.
