Claims
- 1. An undercarriage assembly for supporting and propelling a mechanism, comprising:
- an elongate hollow frame adapted for connection to the mechanism;
- at least three axle members each having a wheel receiving member at one end thereof;
- at least three wheel members each mounted on and secured to a wheel receiving end of an axle member outside said frame;
- means rotatably supporting the axle members at longitudinally spaced points along the frame with each of the axle members extending out of and rotatably supported on at least one side of the frame;
- the middle wheel member extending below a plane lying tangent to the bottoms of the endmost wheel members;
- a plurality of sprocket means each positioned within the frame and each mounted on and secured to an axle member for rotation therewith;
- chain means positioned within the frame and constrained around the sprocket means on the middle axle member and at least one of the endmost axle members to drivingly interconnect at least two of the axle members;
- drive means operably connected to one of the sprocket means for effecting rotation thereof whereby the chain means and the sprocket means cause concurrent rotation of the interconnected axle members;
- a brake disc secured to at least one of the axle members for rotation therewith; and
- at least one brake puck mounted on the frame and positioned for selective engagement with the brake disc to arrest rotation thereof such that said chain means and said sprocket means concurrently arrest rotation of the remaining interconnected axle members.
- 2. An undercarriage assembly for supporting and propelling a mechanism, comprising:
- an elongate hollow frame adapted for connection to the mechanism;
- at least three axle members each having a wheel receiving member at one end thereof;
- means rotatably supporting the axle members at longitudinally spaced points along the frame with each of the axle members extending out of and rotatably supported on at least one side of the frame;
- means for selectively varying the vertical positioning of at least one of the axle members and thereby either positioning the axle members for rotation about axes lying in the same plane to stabilize a mechanism carried by the undercarriage or effectively positioning the center axle member for rotation about an axis located substantially below a plane extending through the axes of rotation of the endmost two axle members to facilitate skid steering of a mechanism carried by the undercarriage assembly;
- a plurality of sprocket means each positioned within the frame and each mounted on and secured to an axle member for rotation therewith;
- chain means positioned within the frame and constrained around the sprocket means on the middle axle member and at least one of the endmost axle members to drivingly interconnect at least two of the axle members;
- said frame comprising a lubricant reservoir whereby said sprocket means and chain means are continuously operated in a lubricant bath;
- drive means operably connected to one of the sprocket means for effecting rotation thereof whereby the chain means and the sprocket means cause concurrent rotation of all of the axle members; and
- brake means for selectively arresting rotation of one of the axle means whereby the chain means and the sprocket means concurrently arrest rotation of the remaining interconnected sprocket means.
- 3. An undercarriage assembly for supporting and propelling a mechanism, comprising:
- an elongate hollow frame adapted for connection to the mechanism;
- at least three axle members each having a wheel receiving member at one end thereof;
- at least three wheel members having substantially identical diameters each mounted on and secured to a wheel receiving end of an axle member outside said frame;
- means rotatably supporting the axle members at longitudinally spaced points along the frame with each of the axle members extending out of and rotatably supported on at least one side of the frame;
- the center axle member being mounted for rotation about an axis positioned substantially below a plane extending through the axes of rotation of the endmost two axle members to facilitate skid steering of the mechanism carried by the undercarriage assembly;
- a plurality of sprocket means each positioned within the frame and each mounted on and secured to one of the axle members;
- chain means positioned within the frame and constrained around the sprocket means to drivingly interconnect all of the axle members;
- drive means operably connected to one of the sprocket means for effecting rotation thereof whereby the chain means and the sprocket means cause concurrent rotation of all of the axle members; and
- brake means for selectively arresting rotation of one of the axle members whereby the chain means and the sprocket means concurrently arrest rotation of the remaining axle members.
- 4. An undercarriage assembly for supporting and propelling a mechanism, comprising:
- an elongate hollow frame adapted for connection to the mechanism;
- four axle members each having a wheel receiving member at one end thereof;
- four wheel members having substantially identical diameters each mounted on and secured to the wheel receiving end of an axle member outside said frame;
- means rotatably supporting the axle members at longitudinally spaced points along the frame with each of the axle members extending out of and rotatably supported on at least one side of the frame;
- the two center axle members being mounted for rotation about axes positioned substantially below a plane extending through the axes of rotation of the endmost two axle members to facilitate skid steering of the mechanism supported by the undercarriage assembly;
- a plurality of sprocket means each positioned within the frame and each mounted on and secured to one of the axle members;
- chain means positioned within the frame and constrained around the sprocket means to drivingly interconnect all of the axle members;
- drive means operably connected to one of the sprocket means for effecting rotation thereof whereby the chain means and the sprocket means cause concurrent rotation of all of the axle members; and
- brake means for selectively arresting rotation of one of the axle members whereby the chain means and the sprocket means concurrently arrest rotation of the remaining axle members.
- 5. An undercarriage assembly for supporting and propelling a mechanism, comprising:
- an elongate hollow frame of rectangular cross section adapted for connection to the mechanism;
- at least three axle members each having a wheel receiving member at one end thereof;
- at least three wheel members secured to a wheel receiving end of an axle member outside said frame;
- means rotatably supporting the axle members at longitudinally spaced points along the frame with each of the axle members extending out of and rotatably supported on at least one side of the frame;
- the center axle member being mounted for rotation about an axis lying in a plane extending through the axes of rotation of the endmost two axle members with the center wheel member having a diameter substantially larger than the diameters of the endmost wheel members to facilitate skid steering of the mechanism carried by the undercarriage assembly;
- a plurality of sprocket means each positioned within the frame and each mounted on and secured to one of the axle members;
- chain means positioned within the frame and constrained around the sprocket means to drivingly interconnect all of the axle members;
- drive means operably connected to one of the sprocket means for effecting rotation thereof whereby the chain means and the sprocket means cause concurrent rotation of all of the axle members; and
- brake means for selectively arresting rotation of one of the axle members whereby the chain means and the sprocket means concurrently arrest rotation of the remaining axle members.
- 6. An undercarriage assembly for supporting and propelling a mechanism, comprising:
- an elongate hollow frame of rectangular cross section adapted for connection to the mechanism;
- at least four axle members each having a wheel receiving member at one end thereof;
- at least four wheel members each mounted on and secured to a wheel receiving end of an axle member outside said frame;
- means rotatably supporting the axle members at longitudinally spaced points along the frame with each of the axle members extending out of and rotatably supported on at least one side of the frame;
- the two center axle members being mounted for rotation about axes lying in a plane extending through the axes of rotation of the endmost two wheel members and the two center wheel members having diameters substantially larger than the diameters of the endmost wheel members to facilitate skid steering of the mechanism supported by the undercarriage assembly;
- a plurality of sprocket means each positioned within the frame and each mounted on and secured to one of the axle members;
- chain means positioned within the frame and constrained around the sprocket means to drivingly interconnect all of the axle members;
- drive means operably connected to one of the sprocket means for effecting rotation thereof whereby the chain means and the sprocket means cause concurrent rotation of all of the axle members; and
- brake means for selectively arresting rotation of one of the axle members whereby the chain means and the sprocket means concurrently arrest rotation of the remaining axle members.
- 7. An undercarriage assembly for supporting and propelling a mechanism, comprising:
- an elongate hollow load-bearing frame adapted for connection to the mechanism;
- at least three axle members each having a wheel receiving member at one end thereof;
- at least three wheel members each mounted on and secured to a wheel receiving end of an axle member outside said frame;
- means rotatably supporting the axle members at longitudinally spaced points along the frame with each of the axle members extending out of and being rotatably supported in at least one side of the frame;
- the middle wheel member extending below a plane lying tangent to the bottoms of the endmost wheel members;
- transmission means positioned within the frame for drivingly interconnecting the middle axle member with at least one of the endmost axle members;
- drive means operably connected to the transmission means for actuation thereof whereby the transmission means cause concurrent rotation of the interconnected axle members;
- a brake disc secured to at least one of the axle members for rotation therewith; and
- at least one brake puck mounted on the frame and positioned for selective engagement with the brake disc to arrest rotation thereof such that said transmission means concurrently arrests rotation of the remaining interconnected axle members.
- 8. An undercarraige assembly for supporting and propelling a mechanism, comprising:
- an elongate hollow load-bearing frame adapted for connection to the mechanism;
- at least three axle members each having a wheel receiving member at one end thereof;
- at least three wheel members having substantially identical diameters each mounted on and secured to a wheel receiving end of an axle member outside said frame;
- means rotatably supporting the axle members at longitudinally spaced points along the frame with each of the axle members extending out of and being rotatably supported in at least one side of the frame;
- the center axle member being mounted for rotation about an axis positioned substantially below a plane extending through the axes of rotation of the endmost two axle members to facilitate skid steering of the mechanism carried by the undercarriage assembly;
- transmission means positioned within the frame for drivingly interconnecting all of the axle members;
- drive means operably connected to the transmission means for effecting actuation thereof whereby the transmission means causes concurrent rotation of all of the axle members; and
- brake means for selectively arresting rotation of one of the axle members whereby the transmission means concurrently arests rotation of the remaining axle members.
- 9. An undercarriage assembly for supporting and propelling a mechanism, comprising:
- an elongate hollow frame of rectangular cross section adapted for connection to the mechanism;
- at least three axle members each having a wheel receiving member at one end thereof;
- at least three wheel members each mounted on and secured to a wheel receiving end of an axle member outside said frame;
- means rotatably supporting the axle members at longitudinally spaced points along the frame with each of the axle members extending out of and being rotatably supported in at least one side of the frame;
- the center axle member being mounted for rotation about an axis lying in a plane extending through the axes of rotation of the endmost two axle members with the center wheel member having a diameter substantially larger than the diameters of the endmost wheel members to facilitate skid steering of the mechanism carried by the undercarriage assembly;
- transmission means positioned within the frame for drivingly interconnecting all of the axle members
- drive means operably connected to the transmission means for effecting actuation thereof whereby the transmission means causes concurrent rotation of all of the axle members; and
- brake means for selectively arresting rotation of one of the axle members whereby the transmission means concurrently arrests rotation of the remaining axle members.
