Claims
- 1. An undercut saw having a central axis; said saw comprising:
a cutting assembly comprising:
a motor assembly including:
a case including:
an outer side; and a motor mounted within said case and rotatable about the central axis; a thin, planar cutting blade attached to said motor so as to rotate about the central axis and extending radially outward past said motor case and terminating radially in a circumferential cutting edge; and a base for supporting said cutting assembly above a support surface such that the central axis is normal to the support surface; said base comprising:
an inner portion including:
a sleeve supporting said case including:
an inner side; and an outer portion including:
an inner end connected to said inner portion and an outer end for resting on the support surface so as to overlie said blade except for an exposed cutting area; and wherein said case and said base include:
cooperative height adjustment means for selectively moving said case vertically within said sleeve so as to adjust the height of said blade relative to the support surface.
- 2. The undercut saw of claim 1 further including:
a wall guide attached to said base including:
means defining a plane adjacent the cutting area of said blade and normal to the plane of said blade for bearing against a workpiece being cut.
- 3. The undercut saw of claim 2 wherein:
said wall guide includes:
positioning means for selectively positioning said plane of said wall guide relative to said blade so as to limit the depth of blade cut.
- 4. The undercut saw of claim 1 wherein:
said cooperative height adjustment means includes:
cooperating screw means for moving said case vertically in said sleeve upon rotation of said case relative to said sleeve about the central axis.
- 5. The undercut saw of claim 4, further including:
a line cord connected to said motor for providing electrical power to said motor; said line cord departing said motor assembly along the central axis.
- 6. The undercut saw of claim 4 wherein:
said screw means comprises external helical threads on said outer side of said case and cooperating internal threads on said inner side of said sleeve.
- 7. The undercut saw of claim 6 further including:
a locking ring surrounding said case and including:
an inner side including:
inner threads cooperating with said external threads of said case so as to move vertically relative to said case with rotation of said ring; and a bottom surface for bearing against said sleeve in a locking position wherein rotation of said case relative to said sleeve is prevented.
- 8. The undercut saw of claim 4 wherein:
said screw means comprises a cooperating pin and helical channel in said outer side of said case and inner side of said sleeve.
- 9. The undercut saw of claim 6 further including:
a line cord connected to said motor for providing electrical power to said motor; said line cord departing said motor assembly along the central axis.
- 10. The undercut saw of claim 1 wherein:
said cooperative height adjustment means includes:
a vertical rack on said outer side of said case; and a pinion on said sleeve cooperating with said rack such that rotation of said pinion moves said case vertically.
- 11. The undercut saw of claim 1 wherein:
said sleeve includes:
a vertical slit; and clamping means for adjusting the width of said slit for clamping said sleeve to said case.
- 12. The undercut saw of claim 1 wherein:
said case is vertically slidable in said sleeve; and said sleeve includes stop means for selectively contacting said case for stopping said case from vertical movement.
- 13. The undercut saw of claim 1 wherein:
said cooperative height adjustment means includes:
a jackscrew.
- 14. An undercut saw having a central axis; said saw comprising:
a cutting assembly comprising:
a motor assembly including:
a case including:
an outer side; and a motor mounted within said case and rotatable about the central axis; a thin, planar cutting blade attached to said motor so as to rotate about the central axis and extending radially outward past said motor case and terminating radially in a circumferential cutting edge; and a base for supporting said cutting assembly above a support surface such that the central axis is normal to the support surface; said base comprising:
an inner portion including:
a cylindrical sleeve supporting said case including:
an inner side; an outer side; and brake means for selective movement between a first position not preventing rotation of said case in said sleeve and a second position resisting relative rotation of said case and said sleeve and holding said case at a selected height; and an outer portion including:
a horizontal portion connected to said inner portion and extending radially outward therefrom and having a periphery past the blade circumference so as to cover said blade except for an exposed cutting area; and a generally vertical leg portion extending down from the periphery of said horizontal portion and terminating in a foot for resting on the support surface; and wherein said case and said sleeve include cooperating screw means for moving said case vertically in said sleeve upon rotation of said case relative to said sleeve about the central axis.
- 15. The undercut saw of claim 14 further including a line cord connected to said motor for providing electrical power to said motor; said line cord departing said motor assembly along the central axis.
- 16. The undercut saw of claim 14 wherein said screw means comprises external helical threads on said outer side of said case and cooperating internal threads on said inner side of said sleeve.
- 17. The undercut saw of claim 16 wherein said brake means includes:
a locking ring surrounding said case and including:
an inner side including:
inner threads cooperating with said external threads of said case so as to move vertically relative to said case with rotation of said ring; and a bottom surface for bearing against said sleeve in a locking position wherein rotation of said case relative to said sleeve is prevented.
- 18. The undercut saw of claim 14 wherein said screw means comprises a cooperating pin and helical channel in said outer side of said case and inner side of said sleeve.
- 19. The undercut saw of claim 14 wherein said screw means comprises a plurality of cooperating pins and helical channels in said outer side of said case and inner side of said sleeve.
- 20. An undercut saw having a central axis; said saw comprising:
a cutting assembly comprising:
a motor assembly including:
a case including:
an outer side; and a motor mounted within said case and rotatable about the central axis; a thin, planar cutting blade attached to said motor so as to rotate about the central axis and extending radially outward past said motor case and terminating radially in a circumferential cutting edge; and a base for supporting said cutting assembly above a support surface such that the central axis is normal to the support surface; said base comprising:
a blade shroud including:
an inner end supporting said case; and an outer end for resting on the support surface; said base extending radially outward from said inner end and having a periphery past the blade circumference such so as to cover the majority of said blade except for a cutting area and so as to define a blade cavity; said exposed cutting area having a first end where said cutting edge of said blade exits said cavity and a second end where said cutting edge enters said cavity: a vacuum passage in said base in fluid communication with the blade cavity and adapted for attachment to a vacuum device for vacuuming blade cuttings from said blade cavity; wherein said case and said base include: cooperative height adjustment means for selectively moving said case vertically within said base so as to adjust the height of said blade relative to the support surface.
- 21. The undercut saw of claim 20, wherein:
said vacuum passage includes:
including an inner end opening on said blade cavity adjacent said second end of said exposed cutting area.
- 22. The undercut saw of claim 20, said shroud further including:
a blade guard assembly including:
a blade guard rotatably mounted to said base and rotatable between a retracted position adjacent said shroud and exposing said blade and an extended position covering the cutting area of said blade so as to include the cutting area in the blade cavity.
- 23. The undercut saw of claim 22 wherein
said guard is biased toward the extended position.
- 24. The undercut saw of claim 22 further including:
sealing means between said guard and said base for preventing air passage therebetween.
- 25. The undercut saw of claim 20 further including:
a wall guide attached to said base including:
means defining a plane adjacent the cutting area of said blade and normal to the plane of said blade for bearing against a workpiece being cut.
- 26. The undercut saw of claim 25 wherein:
said wall guide includes:
positioning means for selectively positioning said plane of said wall guide so as to limit the depth of blade cut.
- 27. The undercut saw of claim 26, wherein:
said wall guide is pivotable about an axis adjacent said second end of said exposed cutting area.
- 28. The undercut saw of claim 27, wherein:
said vacuum passage includes:
an inner end; said inner end opening on said blade cavity adjacent said second end of said exposed cutting area.
- 29. The undercut saw of claim 20 wherein said cooperative height adjustment means includes:
a jackscrew.
- 30. The undercut saw of claim 20 wherein:
said cooperative height adjustment means includes:
cooperating screw means for moving said case vertically in said base upon rotation of said case relative to said base about the central axis.
- 31. The undercut saw of claim 30, further including:
a line cord connected to said motor for providing electrical power to said motor; said line cord departing said motor assembly along the central axis.
- 32. The undercut saw of claim 30 wherein:
said screw means comprises external helical threads on said outer side of said case and cooperating internal threads on said base.
- 33. The undercut saw of claim 32 further including:
a locking ring surrounding said case and including:
an inner side including:
inner threads cooperating with said external threads of said case so as to move vertically relative to said case with rotation of said ring; and a bottom surface for bearing against said base in a locking position wherein rotation of said case relative to said base is prevented.
- 34. The undercut saw of claim 30 wherein:
said screw means comprises a cooperating pin and helical channel in said outer side of said case and in said base.
- 35. The undercut saw of claim 34 further including:
a line cord connected to said motor for providing electrical power to said motor; said line cord departing said motor assembly along the central axis.
- 36. The undercut saw of claim 20 wherein:
said cooperative height adjustment means includes:
a vertical rack on said outer side of said case; and a pinion on said base cooperating with said rack such that rotation of said pinion moves said case vertically.
- 37. The undercut saw of claim 20 wherein:
said base includes:
a vertical slit; and clamping means for adjusting the width of said slit for clamping said base to said case.
- 38. The undercut saw of claim 20 wherein:
said case is vertically slidable in said base; and said base includes stop means for selectively contacting said case for stopping said case from vertical movement.
