Claims
- 1. A control method (200) for controlling a vehicle semi-automatic mechanical change gear transmission system comprising a fuel throttle controlled engine (E) having known characteristics, a multi-speed change gear mechanical transmission (10), a manually controlled master friction clutch (C) drivingly interposed between the engine and the transmission, a first sensor (98) for providing a first input signal indicative of transmission input shaft (16) rotational speed, a second sensor (100) for providing a second input signal (OS) indicative of the rotational speed of the transmission output shaft (90) under at least certain transmission operating conditions, a nonmanually controllable transmission actuator (112, 70, 96) for controlling shifting of the transmission, a mode selector (108) for manual selection of at least an automatic preselection mode of operation and for providing a mode input signal indicative of said selected mode, and a central processing unit (106) for receiving said input signals and for processing same in accordance with predetermined logic rules to issue command output signals, said central processing unit including means responsive to said automatic preselection of a transmission shift from a currently engaged ratio for automatically issuing command output signals to said actuator to cause the transmission to be shifted into neutral;
- said method including:
- predetermining as a function of said known characteristics of said engine a minimum upshift input shaft speed value (150), a rated maximum input shaft speed value (154), a maximum downshift input shaft speed value (152) and a rated minimum input shaft speed value (160);
- if said central processing unit is operating in said automatic preselection mode of operation, sensing the rotational speed of said input shaft (IS) and of said output shaft (OS) and the rotational acceleration (dOS/dt) of said output shaft;
- calculating a first reference value (REF-UP) and a second reference value (REF-DN), said first reference value (REF-UP) decreasing in a range of input shaft speeds from said minimum upshift input shaft speed value (150) to said rated maximum input shaft speed value (154) and said second reference value (REF-DN) increasing in a range of input shaft speeds from said maximum downshift input shaft speed value (152) to said rated minimum input shaft speed value (160); and
- preselecting upshifts only if sensed input shift speed exceeds said minimum upshift input shift speed value (150) and the rotational acceleration of said output shaft (dOS/dt) exceeds said first reference value (REF-UP) and preselecting downshifts only if sensed input shaft speed is less than said maximum downshift input shaft speed value (152) and the rotational acceleration of said output shaft (dOS/dt) is less than said second reference value (REF-DN).
- 2. The method of claim 1 wherein said first reference value is substantially constant at said input shaft speeds exceeding said rated maximum input shaft speed value.
- 3. The method of claim 1 wherein said second reference value is substantially constant at said input shaft speeds less than said rated minimum input shaft speed value.
- 4. The method of claim 2 wherein said second reference value is substantially constant at said input shaft speeds less than said rated minimum input shaft speed value.
- 5. A control (200) system for a control system (104) for semi-automatic implementation of manually and automatically selected shifts of a vehicular mechanical change gear transmission system comprising fuel throttle controlled engine having known characteristics (E), a multi-speed change gear mechanical transmission (10), a manually controlled master friction clutch (C) drivingly interposed between the engine and the transmission, a first sensor (98) for providing a first input signal indicative of transmission input shaft (16) rotational speed, a second sensor (100) for providing a second input signal indicative of the rotational speed of the transmission output shaft (90) under at least transmission engaged in a known gear ratio conditions and a nonmanually controllable transmission actuator (112, 70, 96) for controlling shifting of the transmission, said control system including;
- means (120, 122, 124/132) for manually selecting an upshift or a downshift from a currently engaged transmission ratio or from neutral to a selected ratio and for manually selecting operation in an automatic preselect mode, and providing a third input signal indicative of said selection;
- indicia means (120, 122, 124) for indicating selection of the automatic preselect mode and for indicating selection but not confirmed execution of a shift from the currently engaged transmission ratio;
- a central processing unit (106) for receiving said first, second and third input signals and for processing same in accordance with predetermined logic rules to issue command output signals, said central processing unit including;
- (a) means for storing values predetermined as a function of said known characteristics of said engine, for a minimum upshift input shaft speed value (150), a rated maximum input shaft speed value (154), a maximum downshift input shaft speed value (160) and a rated minimum input shaft speed value (160);
- (b) means responsive to manual selection of operation in an automatic preselection mode (i) for issuing a command output signal to said indicia means to indicate that the automatic preselect mode has been selected, (ii) for determining the desirability of a shift from the currently engaged ratio and to select such a shift if desirable and (iii) for issuing command output signals to said indicia means to provide an indication that an upshift or downshift, as appropriate, has been selected;
- (c) means responsive to selection of a transmission shift from a currently engaged ratio for issuing command output signals to said actuator to bias the transmission to be shifted into neutral;
- (d) means responsive to (i) a selection of a shift from a currently engaged ratio into a selected ratio and (ii) confirmation of a transmission neutral condition for (i) sensing manual substantial synchronization of the transmission and (ii) thereafter for issuing command output signals to said actuator to cause the transmission to be shifted into the selected ratio; and
- (e) means for confirming execution of a selected shift and for issuing command output signals to said indicia means to terminate the indication of a selected shift;
- said control method characterized by:
- if said central processing unit is operating in said automatic preselection mode of operation, calculating a first reference value (REF-UP) and a second reference value (REF-DN), said first reference value (REF-UP) decreasing in the range of input shaft speed from said minimum upshift input shaft speed value (150) to said rated maximum input shaft speed value (154) and said second reference value (REF-DN) increasing in the range of input shaft speeds from said maximum downshift input shaft speed value (152) to said rated minimum input shaft speed value (160); and
- preselecting upshifts only if sensed input shaft speed exceeds said minimum upshift input shaft speed value (150) and the rotational acceleration of said output shaft (dOS/dt) exceeds said first reference value (REF-UP) and preselecting downshifts only if sensed input shaft speed is less than said maximum downshift input shaft speed value (152) and the rotational acceleration of said output shaft (dOS/dt) is less than said second reference value (REF-DN).
- 6. The system of claim 5 wherein said first reference value is substantially constant at said input shaft speeds exceeding said rated maximum input shaft speed value.
- 7. The system of claim 5 wherein said second reference value is substantially constant at said input shaft speeds less than said rated minimum input shaft speed value.
- 8. The system of claim 6 wherein said second reference value is substantially constant at said input shaft speeds less than said rated minimum input shaft speed value.
- 9. A control system for a vehicular semi-automatic mechanical transmission system of the type having at least a semi-automatic mode of operation wherein the transmission is automatically shifted from an engaged ratio into neutral and is retained in said neutral condition pending manual system manipulations by the vehicle operator, said system including:
- means for predetermining, as a function of said known characteristics of an engine, a minimum upshift input shaft speed value (150), a rated maximum input shaft speed value (154), a maximum downshift input shaft speed value (160) and a rated minimum input shaft speed value (160);
- means effective if said system is operating in said semi-automatic mode of operation, for sensing the rotational speed of the transmission input shaft and output shaft and the rotational acceleration of the transmission output shaft; the transmission shifting/nonshifting condition;
- means for calculating as a function of input shaft speed a first reference value (REF-UP) said first reference value (REF-UP) decreasing in the range of input shaft speeds from said minimum upshift input shaft speed value (150) to said rated maximum input shaft speed value (154) and said second reference value (REF-DN) increasing in the range of input shaft speeds from said maximum downshift input shaft speed value (152) to said rated minimum input shaft speed value (160); and
- means for preselecting upshifts only if sensed input shaft speed exceeds said minimum upshift input shift speed value (150) and the rotational acceleration of said output shaft (dOS/dt) exceeds said first reference value (REF-UP) and preselecting downshifts only if sensed input shaft speed is less than said maximum downshift input shaft speed value (152) and the rotational acceleration of said output shaft (dOS/dt) is less than said second reference value (REF-DN).
- 10. The system of claim 9 wherein said first reference value is substantially constant at said input shaft speeds exceeding said rated maximum input shaft speed value.
- 11. The system of claim 9 wherein said second reference value is substantially constant at said input shaft speeds less than said rated minimum input shaft speed value.
- 12. The system of claim 10 wherein said second reference value is substantially constant at said input shaft speeds less than said rated minimum input shaft speed value.
- 13. A control method (200) for controlling a vehicle semi-automatic mechanical change gear transmission system comprising a fuel throttle controlled engine (E) having known characteristics, a multi-speed change gear mechanical transmission (10), a manually controlled master friction clutch (C) drivingly interposed between the engine and the transmission, a first sensor (98) for providing a first input signal indicative of transmission input shaft (16) rotational speed, a second sensor (100) for providing a second input signal (OS) indicative of the rotational speed of the transmission output shaft (90) under at least certain transmission operating conditions, a nonmanually controllable transmission actuator (112, 70, 96) for controlling shifting of the transmission, a mode selector (108) for manual selection of at least an automatic preselection mode of operation and for providing a mode input signal indicative of said selected mode, and a central processing unit (106) for receiving said input signals and for processing same in accordance with predetermined logic rules to issue command output signals, said central processing unit including means responsive to automatic preselection of a transmission shift from a currently engaged ratio for automatically issuing command output signals to said actuator to cause the transmission to be shifted into neutral;
- said method including:
- predetermining as a function of said known characteristics of said engine a minimum upshift input shaft speed value (150) and a rated maximum input shaft speed value (154);
- if said central processing unit is operating in said automatic preselection mode of operation, sensing the rotational speed of said input shaft (IS) and of said output shaft (OS) and the rotational acceleration (dOS/dt) of said output shaft;
- calculating a first reference value (REF-UP) decreasing in the range of input shaft speeds from said minimum upshift input shaft speed value (150) to said rated maximum input shaft speed value (154); and
- preselecting upshifts only if sensed input shift speed exceeds said minimum upshift input shift speed value (150) and the rotational acceleration of said output shaft (dOS/dt) exceeds said first reference value (REF-UP).
- 14. The method of claim 13 wherein said first reference value is substantially constant at said input shaft speeds exceeding said rated maximum input shaft speed value.
- 15. A control method (200) for controlling a vehicle semi-automatic mechanical change gear transmission system comprising a fuel throttle controlled engine (E) having known characteristics, a multi-speed change gear mechanical transmission (10), a manually controlled master friction clutch (C) drivingly interposed between the engine and the transmission, a first sensor (98) for providing a first input signal indicative of transmission input shaft (16) rotational speed, a second sensor (100) for providing a second input signal (OS) indicative of the rotational speed of the transmission output shaft (90) under at least certain transmission operating conditions, a nonmanually controllable transmission actuator (112, 70, 96) for controlling shifting of the transmission, a mode selector (108) for manual selection of at least an automatic preselection mode of operation and for providing a mode input signal indicative of said selected mode, and a central processing unit (106) for receiving said input signals and for processing same in accordance with predetermined logic rules to issue command output signals, said central processing unit including means responsive to automatic preselection of a transmission shift from a currently engaged ratio for automatically issuing command output signals to said actuator to cause the transmission to be shifted into neutral;
- said method including:
- predetermining as a function of said known characteristics of said engine, a maximum downshift input shaft speed value (160) and a rated minimum input shaft speed value (160);
- if said central processing unit is operating in said automatic preselection mode of operation, sensing the rotational speed of said input shaft (IS) and of said output shaft (OS) and the rotational acceleration (dOS/dt) of said output shaft;
- calculating a second reference value (REF-DN), said second reference value (REF-DN) increasing in the range of input shaft speeds from said maximum downshift input shaft speed value (152) to said rated minimum input shaft speed value (160); and
- preselecting downshifts only if sensed input shaft speed is less than said maximum downshift input shaft speed value (152) and the rotational acceleration of said output shaft (dOS/dt) is less than said second reference value (REF-DN).
- 16. The method of claim 15 wherein said second reference value is substantially constant at said input shaft speeds less than said rated minimum input shaft speed value.
