Claims
- 1. A universal ceiling box assembly adapted to support either a fan or a fixture comprising:
- a top portion having a perimeter;
- a side portion extending substantially perpendicularly from said top portion along said perimeter of said top portion, said side portion and said top portion partially enclosing a main cavity;
- two flanges extending substantially perpendicularly from said side portion and extending into said main cavity,
- each said flange having an unthreaded hole extending through said flange, respectively, each of said holes having the same diameter; and
- fastening means for attaching either a fan or a fixture to said holes, said fastening means cutting threads in said flanges when said fastening means is inserted into said holes.
- 2. A universal ceiling box assembly according to claim 1, wherein
- said fastening means are screws.
- 3. A universal ceiling box as claimed in claim 1, wherein:
- said top portion is substantially flat.
- 4. A universal ceiling box as claimed in claim 1, wherein:
- the axes of said holes are disposed at substantially the same distance from a central axis of said ceiling box.
- 5. A universal ceiling box as claimed in claim 1, wherein:
- each of said holes initially have a diameter smaller than that which is compatible with a 8-32 screw for supporting said fixture, and are cut by said fastening means to have a diameter compatible with a 8-32 screw for supporting said fixture.
- 6. A universal ceiling box as claimed in claim 1, wherein:
- each of said holes initially have a diameter smaller than that which is compatible with a 10-32 screw for supporting said fan, and are cut by said fastening means to have a diameter compatible with a 10-32 screw for supporting said fan.
- 7. A universal ceiling box as claimed in claim 1, wherein:
- portions of said flanges having said holes therein lie within substantially the same plane.
- 8. A universal ceiling box as claimed in claim 1, wherein:
- said flanges are disposed on opposite sides of a first plane extending through a central axis of said main cavity perpendicular to said top portion.
- 9. A universal ceiling box as claimed in claim 1, wherein:
- said side portion defines said main cavity as a substantially circularly shaped cavity.
- 10. A universal ceiling box as claimed in claim 1, wherein:
- said side portion defines said main cavity as an octagonally shaped cavity.
- 11. A universal ceiling box as claimed in claim 1, wherein:
- said flanges extend toward each other.
