Claims
- 1. A computer implemented method for negotiating output ranges comprising:
establishing initial values; determining initial ranges of a device via reading the device; determining if the device is a read first device and if yes determining whether the data read succeeded and if yes setting output ranges as the initial ranges read.
- 2. The method of claim 1, further comprising issuing a fatal error if the data read was unsuccessful.
- 3. The method of claim 1, further comprising reading extended display identification data (EDID).
- 4. The method of claim 1, further comprising identifying a next potential device if the reading of the device did not succeed.
- 5. The method of claim 4 further comprising establishing a context to facilitate reading description data from a next device.
- 6. The method of claim 1, performing an intersection between previously determined ranges and current read ranges if the device is not a first read device but was read successfully.
- 7. The method of claim 6, further comprising employing UGA firmware to set a requested mode from the intersected ranges.
- 8. The method of claim 6, determining discrete sets of output ranges.
- 9. The method of claim 6, determining contiguous sets of output ranges.
- 10. The method of claim 1, further comprising determining if there is another device from which descriptive data is to be read.
- 11. A computer implemented method for enumerating a device, comprising:
acquiring data associated with an initial device and creating a context to facilitate interacting with the device; employing the context to start the initial device; determining whether the device can be started and if not setting the context to a parent context; and acquiring data associated with a child device if the initial device could be started.
- 12. The method of claim 11 being recursively applied so as to enumerate a plurality of devices.
- 13. The method of claim 12, further comprising performing a depth first traversal of a plurality of devices.
- 14. The method of claim 11, further comprising reading the power state of the device and causing a power state change.
- 15. The method of claim 12, further comprising performing a top down traversal of a plurality of devices during power up.
- 16. The method of claim 12, further comprising performing a bottom-up traversal of a plurality of devices during power down.
- 17. A universal graphics adaptor (UGA) firmware employing the method of claim 10 to support a plurality of video child devices.
- 18. The method of claim 17, supporting a graphics controller.
- 19. The method of claim 17, supporting an output controller.
- 20. The method of claim 17, supporting an output port.
- 18. The method of claim 11, further comprising providing an additional device descriptor data that can be interpreted by a system BIOS and Independent Hardware Vendor (IHV) driver.
- 19. The method of claim 11, further comprising providing a standardized Plug and Play (PnP) identifier.
- 20. The method of claim 11, further comprising providing a device description string.
- 21. The method of claim 11, further comprising implementing a set of device channel I/O routines which enable the operating system or system firmware to directly communicate with the output device, if the data acquisition fails.
- 22. The method of claim 11, further comprising acquiring extended display identification data (EDID).
- 23. The method of claim 22, further comprising UGA firmware creating extended display identification data, if the EDID cannot be acquired.
