Claims
- 1. A urethral profile apparatus comprising an elongate member having proximal and distal ends, said proximal end including a probe, said probe being selectively positionable within a urethral passageway by axial translation of said elongate member via said distal end, said probe dimensioned so as to indicate constrictures of the urethral passageway.
- 2. The urethral profile apparatus of claim 1 wherein said probe is adapted to be received upon a catheter, said probe being axially translatable along a segment of the catheter.
- 3. The urethral profile apparatus of claim 2 wherein said probe is rigidly dimensioned.
- 4. The urethral profile apparatus of claim 2 wherein said probe is resiliently responsive to constrictures of the urethral passageway.
- 5. The urethral profile apparatus of claim 4 wherein said probe comprises a reversibly expandable element.
- 6. The urethral profile apparatus of claim 5 wherein said reversibly expandable element is circumferentially disposable about an exterior surface of the catheter for sliding engagement therewith.
- 7. The urethral profile apparatus of claim 5 wherein said reversibly expandable element is in fluid communication with said elongate member.
- 8. The urethral profile apparatus of claim 5 wherein said reversibly expandable element is in fluid communication with said distal end of said elongate member.
- 9. The urethral profile apparatus of claim 4 wherein said proximal end of said elongate member comprises a tubular element.
- 10. The urethral profile apparatus of claim 9 wherein said probe is integral to said tubular element.
- 11. The urethral profile apparatus of claim 10 wherein said probe comprises a portion of a free end of said tubular element.
- 12. The urethral profile apparatus of claim 11 wherein said probe comprises an enlarged end portion of said tubular element.
- 13. The urethral profile apparatus of claim 12 wherein said enlarged end portion is belled.
- 14. The urethral profile apparatus of claim 10 wherein said tubular element includes a line of weakness in a wall thereof.
- 15. The urethral profile apparatus of claim 11 wherein said tubular element includes a slot in a wall thereof.
- 16. The urethral profile apparatus of claim 9 wherein a portion of said elongate member includes graduations upon an exterior surface thereof.
- 17. The urethral profile apparatus of claim 10 wherein a portion of said elongate member includes spaced apart indicia on an exterior surface thereof.
- 18. The urethral profile apparatus of claim 1 wherein said elongate member is tubular.
- 19. The urethral profile apparatus of claim 18 wherein said elongate member is adapted to be fluid filled.
- 20. The urethral profile apparatus of claim 19 wherein said elongate member includes at least a single lumen extending between said proximal and said distal ends thereof.
- 21. The urethral profile apparatus of claim 20 wherein at least a portion of said elongate member includes visible graduations.
- 22. The urethral profile apparatus of claim 21 wherein said distal end of said elongate member includes a monitoring element.
- 23. The urethral profile apparatus of claim 22 wherein said monitoring element is in fluid communication with said probe.
- 24. The urethral profile apparatus of claim 23 wherein one of said at least a single lumen at least indirectly connects said probe to said monitoring element.
- 25. The urethral profile apparatus of claim 24 wherein said probe is resiliently responsive to constrictures of the urethral passageway.
- 26. The urethral profile apparatus of claim 22 wherein said monitoring element is responsive to forces bearing upon said probe.
- 27. The urethral profile apparatus of claim 22 wherein said probe comprises a reversibly expandable element.
- 28. The urethral profile apparatus of claim 27 wherein said reversibly expandable element is in fluid communication with said at least a single lumen of said elongate member.
- 29. The urethral profile apparatus of claim 28 wherein said monitoring element is in fluid communication with said reversibly expandable element.
- 30. The urethral profile apparatus of claim 29 wherein said reversibly expandable element is circumferentially disposed about a segment of said proximal end of said elongate member.
- 31. The urethral profile apparatus of claim 29 wherein said monitoring element comprises a pressure sensing assembly.
- 32. The urethral profile apparatus of claim 31 wherein said pressure sensing assembly includes a pressure indicator.
- 33. The urethral profile apparatus of claim 32 wherein said pressure sensing assembly includes a pressure recorder.
- 34. The urethral profile apparatus of claim 29 wherein said monitoring element comprises a pressure indicator.
- 35. The urethral profile apparatus of claim 29 wherein said monitoring element comprises a reversibly expandable element
- 36. The urethral profile apparatus of claim 35 wherein said reversibly expandable element is circumferentially disposed about a segment of said distal end of said elongate member.
- 37. An endourethral assembly comprising a urethral profile apparatus adapted so as to be supported by a catheter, said urethral profile apparatus comprising a probe dimensioned so as to tactilely indicate constrictures of a urethral passageway, said probe being carried by a portion of said catheter for axial translation with respect thereto.
- 38. The assembly of claim 37 wherein said apparatus further comprises a probe wire having proximal and distal ends, said probe supported at said proximal end of said probe wire.
- 39. The assembly of claim 38 wherein said distal end of said probe wire of said apparatus includes a grip.
- 40. The assembly of claim 39 wherein at least a portion of said probe wire includes spaced apart markings.
- 41. The assembly of claim 40 wherein at least a portion of said catheter includes at least a single marking.
- 42. The assembly of claim 41 wherein axial travel of said probe relative to said catheter is proximally limited by a portion of a proximal end of said catheter.
- 43. The assembly of claim 42 wherein said portion of said proximal end of said catheter comprises an anchor element.
- 44. The assembly of claim 43 wherein said anchor element comprises a reversibly expandable balloon.
- 45. The assembly of claim 42 wherein axial travel of said probe relative to said catheter is proximally limited by abutting engagement of a distal segment of said probe wire with a distal extremity of a distal portion of said catheter.
- 46. The assembly of claim 45 wherein said distal segment of said probe wire comprises said grip.
- 47. The assembly of claim 45 wherein said axial travel of said probe relative to said catheter is distally limited by abutting engagement of said probe with a stop of said catheter.
- 48. The assembly of claim 47 wherein said apparatus further includes a supplemental probe wire support, said supplemental probe wire support adapted to maintain said probe wire not greater than a preselected distance from said catheter.
- 49. The assembly of claim 48 wherein said supplemental probe wire support reversibly circumscribes said probe wire and said catheter.
- 50. The assembly of claim 48 wherein said supplemental probe wire support slidingly receives said probe wire for axial translation therethrough.
- 51. The assembly of claim 50 wherein said probe circumscribes an outer surface of said catheter.
- 52. The assembly of claim 51 wherein said stop defines a maximum cross section for a body of said catheter.
- 53. The assembly of claim 52 wherein said stop is positioned distally relative to said probe.
- 54. The assembly of claim 53 wherein said stop circumscribes said outer surface of said catheter.
- 55. The assembly of claim 54 wherein said stop is adapted to slidingly receive said probe wire.
- 56. The assembly of claim 52 wherein a radial projection from said body of said catheter defines said stop.
- 57. In a method of urethral profiling, the steps comprising:
a. introducing a probe into a portion of the lower urinary tract, said probe configured so as to indicate constrictures of the lower urinary tract; b. tactilely sensing engagement of said probe with the constrictures of the lower urinary tract; and, c. indicating a discrete point on a distal segment of said probe for comparison with a benchmark upon tactile sensing of engagement of said probe with the constrictures of the lower urinary tract so as to ascertain the distance between an external sphincter and a bladder neck.
