A method of treatment of slow- or non-healing wounds comprising the topical application of a composition comprising at least one non-bacterial plasminogen activator selected from the group consisting of urokinase, a urokinase mutant, prourokinase, a prourokinase mutant, and plasminogen activator derived from vampire-bats, as the active ingredient therein, in a sufficient amount to the surface of the slow- or non-healing external wound to treat the slow- or non-healing wound.
- 2. The method of treatment of claim 1, wherein the plasminogen activator is urokinase.
- 3. The method of treatment of claim 1, wherein the plasminogen activator is present in a physiologically acceptable carrier.
- 4. The method of treatment of claim 1, wherein the wounds are leg ulcers.
- 5. A method of treatment of slow- or non-healing wounds consisting of the topical application of a composition consisting essentially of at least one non-bacterial plasminogen activator selected from the group consisting of urokinase, a urokinase mutant, prourokinase, a prourokinase mutant, and plasminogen activator derived from vampire-bats, present in a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier, in a sufficient amount to the surface of the slow- or non-healing external wound to treat the slow- or non-healing external wound.
