Claims
- 1. A method of controlling arachnids, wherein the arachnids are treated with an arachnicidally effective amount of an alpha-arylacrylic acid derivative of the formula I ##STR17## where X is ethenylene;
- n is 0 or 1;
- m is 0, 1, 2, 3, or 4, and the radicals R.sup.2 may be different when m is 2, 3, or 4;
- R.sub.1 is cyano, cyanato, thiocyanato, nitro hydroxyl, or carboxyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -haloalkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 haloalkoxy, C.sub.3 -C.sub.8 -cycloalkyl, C.sub.5 -C.sub.8 -cycloalkenyl or C.sub.5 -C.sub.8 -cycloalkadienyl, where these groups may carry from one to five halogen atoms, one phenyl, phenoxy or phenylthio group or may carry from one to three of the following groups: C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -haloalkyl, C.sub.1 C.sub.4 -alkoxy, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -haloalkoxy, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkylthio or C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -haloalkylthio; C.sub.2 -C.sub.6 -alkenyl or C.sub.2 -C.sub.6 -alkynl, where these groups may carry from one to five halogen atoms, one phenyl, phenoxy or phenylthio group or may carry from one to three of the following groups: C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -haloalkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkoxy, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -haloalkoxy, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkylthio or C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -haloalkylthio; amino which may carry one, C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 -alkylcarbonyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 -alkoxycarbonyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 -alkylaminocarbonyl, di-C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 -alkylaminocarbonyl; benzyloxycarbonyl, benzoyl, phenyl-C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl, phenyl-C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkoxy, or phenoxy-C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl, where the aromatic groups may carry from one to five halogen atoms or may carry from one to three of the following groups: C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -haloalkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkoxy, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -haloalkoxy, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkylthio or C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -haloalkylthio;
- or R.sup.1 together with R.sup.2 in the ortho-position may form a 1, 3-butadiene-1, 4-diyl group, where this group may carry from one to four halogen atoms or may carry one or two of the following groups: C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -haloalkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkoxy, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -haloalkoxy, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkylthio or C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -haloalkylthio; or a three-membered or four-membered chain consisting of carbon members and an oxygen member, where this chain may carry from one to three C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl groups, and
- R.sup.2 is halogen; C.sub.1 -C.sub.10 -alkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 -alkoxy, C.sub.2 -C.sub.10 -alkynyloxy or C.sub.5 -C.sub.10 -alkadienyloxy, where these groups may carry from one to five halogen atoms, one phenyl, phenoxy or phenylthio group or may carry from one to three of the following groups: C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -haloalkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkoxy, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -haloalkoxy, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkylthio or C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -haloalkylthio; benzyloxy or benzylthio, where the aromatic groups may carry from one to five halogen atoms, one phenyl, phenoxy or phenylthio group or may carry from one to three of the following groups: C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -haloalkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkoxy, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -haloalkoxy, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkylthio or C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -haloalkylthio, provided that n is not 0 when m is 0; n is not 0 when m is 1 and R.sup.2 denotes halogen in 4-position of the phenyl radical or when m is 2 and R.sup. 2 denotes halogen in 2- and 6-position of the phenyl group.
- 2. A method of controlling arachnids, according to claim 1, wherein the arachnids are treated with an arachnicidally effective amount of an alpha-arylacrylic acid derivative of the formula I ##STR18## where X is ethenylene;
- n is 0 or 1;
- m is 0, 1, 2, 3, or 4, and the groups R.sup.2 may be different when m is 2, 3, or 4;
- R.sup.1 is cyano, C.sub.3 -C.sub.8 -cycloalkyl, C.sub.5 -C.sub.8 -cycloalkenyl or C.sub.5 -C.sub.8 -cycloalkadienyl, where these groups may carry from one to five halogen atoms, one phenyl, phenoxy or phenylthio group or from one to three of the following groups: C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -haloalkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkoxy, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -haloalkoxy, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkylthio or C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -haloalkylthio, or C.sub.2 -C.sub.6 -alkenyl, where this group may carry from one to five halogen atoms, one phenyl, phenoxy or phenylthio or may carry form one to three of the following groups: C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkoxy, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -haloalkoxy, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkylthio or C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -haloalkylthio, and
- R.sup.2 is halogen; C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkoxy, C.sub.2 -C.sub.4 -alkynyloxy or C.sub.5 -C.sub.10 -alkadienyloxy, where these groups may carry from one to five halogen atoms, one phenyl, phenoxy or phenylthio group or may carry from one to three of the following groups: C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkoxy, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -haloalkoxy, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkylthio or C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -haloalkylthio, provided that n is not 0 when m is 0; n is not 0 when m is 1 and R.sup.2 denotes halogen in 4-position of the phenyl radical or when m is 2 and R.sup.2 denotes halogen in 2- and 6-position of the phenyl group.
- 3. A method of controlling arachnids, according to claim 1, wherein the arachnids are treated with an arachnicidally effective amount of an alpha-arylacrylic acid derivative of the formula I ##STR19## where X is ethenylene;
- n is 0 or 1;
- m is 0, 1, 2, 3, or 4, and the radicals R.sup.2 may be different when m is 2, 3, or 4;
- R.sup.1 is cyano, nitro, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -haloalkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -haloalkoxy, C.sub.3 -C.sub.8 -cycloalkyl, C.sub.2 -C.sub.6 -alkenyl or C.sub.2 -C.sub.6 -alkenyl, or R.sup.1 together with R.sup.2 in the ortho-position may form a 1, 3-butadiene-1, 4-diyl-group, where this group may carry from one to four halogen atoms or may carry one or two of the following groups: C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -haloalkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkoxy, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -haloalkoxy, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkylthio or C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -haloalkylthio; or a three-membered or four-membered chain consisting of carbon members and an oxygen member, where this chain may carry form one to three C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl groups; and
- R.sup.2 is halogen; C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkoxy, C.sub.2 -C.sub.6 -alkynyloxy or C.sub.5 -C.sub.10 -alkadienyloxy, where these groups may carry from one to five halogen atoms, one phenyl, phenoxy or phenylthio group or may carry from one to three of the following groups: C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -haloalkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkoxy, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -haloalkoxy, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkylthio or C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -haloalkylthio; benzyloxy where the aromatic groups may carry from one to five halogen atoms, or from one to three of the following groups: C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -haloalkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkoxy, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -haloalkoxy, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkylthio or C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -haloalkylthio provided that n is not 0 when m is 0; n is not 0 when m is 1 and R.sup.2 denotes halogen in 4-position of the phenyl radical or when m is 2 and R.sup.2 denotes halogen in 2- and 6-positions of the phenyl group.
- 4. A method of controlling arachnids, according to claim 1, wherein the arachnids are treated with an arachnicidally effective amount of an alpha-arylacrylic acid derivative of the formula I ##STR20## where X is ethenylene;
- n is 0 or 1;
- m is 0, 1, 2, 3, or 4, and the groups R.sub.2 may be different when m is 2, 3, or 4;
- R.sup.1 is cyano, C.sub.3 -C.sub.6 -cycloalkyl, or C.sub.2 -C.sub.6 -alkenyl,
- R.sup.2 is halogen; C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkoxy, C.sub.2 -C.sub.6 -alkenyloxy or C.sub.5 -C.sub.10 -alkadienyloxy, where these groups may carry from one to five halogen atoms, one phenyl, phenoxy or phenylthio group or may carry from one to three of the following groups: C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkoxy, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -haloalkoxy, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkylthio or C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -haloalkylthio;
- provided that n is not 0 when m is 0; n is not 0 when m is 1 and R.sup.2 denotes halogen in 4-position of the phenyl radical or when m is 2 and R.sup.2 denotes halogen in 2- and 6-positions of the phenyl group.
- 5. A method of controlling arachnids, according to claim 1, wherein the arachnids are treated with an arachnicidally effective amount of an alpha-arylacrylic acid derivative of the formula ##STR21## where X is ethenylene;
- n is 0 or 1;
- m is 0, 1 or 2 and the radicals R.sup.2 may be different when m is 2;
- R.sup.1 is C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -haloalkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -haloalkoxy, C.sub.3 -C.sub.6 -cycloalkyl, or C.sub.2 -C.sub.6 -alkenyl
- or R.sup.1 together with R.sup.2 in the ortho-position may form a 1, 3-butadiene-1, 4-diyl group, or a three-membered or four-membered chain consisting of carbon members and an oxygen member, where this chain may carry form one to three C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl groups, and R.sup.2 is halogen; C.sub.1 -C.sub.10 -alkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 -alkoxy where these groups may carry from one to five halogen atoms, or may carry from one to three of the following groups: C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkoxy, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -haloalkoxy, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkylthio or C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -haloalkylthio;
- where the aromatic group may carry from one to five halogen atoms, or from one to three of the following groups: C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -haloalkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkoxy, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -haloalkoxy, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkylthio or C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -haloalkylthio, provided that n is not 0 when m is 0; n is not 0 when m is 1 and R.sup.2 denotes halogen in 4-position of the phenyl radical or when m is 2 and R.sup.2 denotes halogen in 2- and 6-positions of the phenyl group.
- 6. A method of controlling arachnids, according to claim 1, wherein the arachnids are treated with an arachnicidally effective amount of an alpha-arylacrylic acid derivative of the formula I ##STR22## where X is ethenylene;
- n is 0 or 1;
- m is 0, 1, or 2 and the groups R.sup.2 may be different when m is 2;
- R.sup.1 is C.sub.3 -C.sub.8 -cycloalkyl, or C.sub.2 -C.sub.6 -alkenyl
- R.sup.2 is halogen; C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl or C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkoxy where these groups may carry from one to five halogen atoms, or may carry from one to three of the following groups: C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -haloalkoxy, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkylthio or C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -haloalkylthio provided that n is not 0 when m is 0; n is not 0 when m is 1 and R.sup.2 denotes halogen in 4-position of the phenyl radical or when m is 2 and R.sub.2 denotes halogen in 2- and 6-positions of the phenyl group.
- 7. A method of controlling arachnids, according to claim 1, wherein the arachnids are treated with an arachnicidally effective amount of an alpha-aryl-acrylic acid derivative of the formula I A ##STR23## Wherein R.sup.x and R.sup.z denote hydrogen, halogen, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -haloalkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkoxy or C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -haloalkoxy,
- R.sup.y denotes hydrogen, halogen, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -haloalkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkoxy or C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -haloalkoxy, C.sub.3 -C.sub.6 -cycloalkyl, C.sub.3 -C.sub.6 -alkenyl or benzyloxy, or
- R.sup.y and R.sup.z together from a 1, 3-butadiene-1,4-diyl group or a C.sub.2 -C.sub.3 -alkylenoxy group, the latter being optionally substituted by one to three C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl radicals, provided that at least one of the radicals R.sup.x, R.sup.y and R.sup.z is not hydrogen.
- 8. A method according to claim 7, wherein the compounds IA are defined as follows:
- R.sup.x and R.sup.z denote hydrogen, fluorine, chlorine, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -haloalkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkoxy or C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -haloalkoxy,
- R.sup.y denotes hydrogen, fluorine, chlorine, bromine, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -haloalkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkoxy, C.sub.1 -C.sub.2 -haloalkoxy, C.sub.3 -C.sub.6 -cycloalkyl, C.sub.3 -C.sub.6 -alkenyl or benzyl or
- R.sup.y and R.sup.z together form a 1,3-butadiene-1,4-diyl group or a C.sub.2 -alkylenoxy group, the latter being optionally substituted by one or two C.sub.1 -C.sub.2 -alkyl radicals.
- 9. A method according to claim 7, wherein the compounds IA are defined as follows:
- R.sup.x and R.sup.z denote hydrogen, fluorine, chlorine, C.sub.1 -C.sub.2 -haloalkyl C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkoxy or C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -haloalkoxy,
- R.sup.y denotes hydrogen, fluorine, chlorine, C.sub.1 -C.sub.2 -haloalkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.2 -haloalkoxy or C.sub.3 -C.sub.6 -cycloalkyl.
