Claims
- 1. A defoliation safener composition comprising:
(a) an abscission agent, a thinning agent, or a combination thereof; and (b) an α2-adrenergic receptor agonist, an adrenergic inhibitor, or a combination thereof.
- 2. The composition of claim 1, wherein the α2-adrenergic receptor agonist is selected from the group consisting of clonidine, guanfacine, brimonidine, and guanabenz.
- 3. The composition of claim 1, wherein the concentration of the α2-adrenergic receptor agonist is about 25 to 1,000 mg/L.
- 4. The composition of claim 1, wherein the concentration of the α2-adrenergic receptor agonist is about 50 to 500 mg/L.
- 5. The composition of claim 1, wherein the thinning agent is naphthalene acetic acid or 6-benzyladenine.
- 6. The composition of claim 1, wherein the adrenergic inhibitor is selected from the group consisting of guanethidine, bethanidine, guanadrel, and debrisoquine.
- 7. The composition of claim 1, wherein the concentration of the adrenergic inhibitor is about 25 to 1,000 mg/L.
- 8. The composition of claim 1, wherein the concentration of the adrenergic inhibitor is about 50 to 500 mg/L.
- 9. The composition of claim 1, wherein the abscission agent is 2-chloroethyl phosphonic acid.
- 10. The composition of claim 1, wherein the abscission agent is corotanine.
- 11. A defoliation safener composition comprising:
(a) a plant-compatible surfactant; and (b) an α2-adrenergic receptor agonist, an adrenergic inhibitor, or a combination thereof.
- 12. The defoliation safener composition of claim 11, wherein the surfactant is selected from the group consisting of a blend of poloyalkylene oxide modified polydimethyl siloxane and non-ionic surfactant, polyalkylene oxide modified heptamethyl trisiloxane, and sorbitan mono-9 octadecenoate poly(oxy-1,1-ethanedlyl).
- 13. The defoliation safener composition of claim 12, wherein the concentration of a blend of poloyalkylene oxide modified polydimethyl siloxane and non-ionic surfactant or polyalkylene oxide modified heptamethyl trisiloxane is about 0.5 to 0.05%.
- 14. The defoliation safener composition of claim 12, wherein the concentration of sorbitan mono-9 octadecenoate poly(oxy-1,1-ethanedlyl) is about 1.0 to 0.01%.
- 15. The composition of claim 11, wherein the α2-adrenergic receptor agonist is selected from the group consisting of clonidine, guanfacine, brimonidine, and guanabenz.
- 16. The composition of claim 11, wherein the concentration of the α2-adrenergic receptor agonist is about 25 to 1,000 mg/L.
- 17. The composition of claim 11, wherein the concentration of the α2-adrenergic receptor agonist is about 50 to 500 mg/L.
- 18. The composition of claim 11, wherein the adrenergic inhibitor is selected from the group consisting of guanethidine, bethanidine, guanadrel, and debrisoquine.
- 19. The composition of claim 11, wherein the concentration of the adrenergic inhibitor is about 25 to 1,000 mg/L.
- 20. The composition of claim 11, wherein the concentration of the adrenergic inhibitor is about 50 to 500 mg/L.
- 21. A defoliation safener composition comprising:
(a) a chemical selected from the group consisting of an herbicide, a pesticide, an antimicrobial agent, a fungicide, a fertilizer, and a plant hormone; and (b) an α2-adrenergic receptor agonist, an adrenergic inhibitor, or a combination thereof.
- 22. The composition of claim 21, wherein the α2-adrenergic receptor agonist is selected from the group consisting of clonidine, guanfacine, brimonidine, and guanabenz.
- 23. The composition of claim 21, wherein the concentration of the α2-adrenergic receptor agonist is about 25 to 1,000 mg/L.
- 24. The composition of claim 21, wherein the concentration of the α2-adrenergic receptor agonist is about 50 to 500 mg/L.
- 25. The composition of claim 21, wherein the concentration of the adrenergic inhibitor is about 25 to 1,000 mg/L.
- 26. The composition of claim 21, wherein the concentration of the adrenergic inhibitor is about 50 to 500 mg/L.
- 27. A method of reducing defoliation of a plant or tree comprising administering an effective amount of an α2-adrenergic receptor agonist, an adrenergic inhibitor, or a combination thereof, to a plant or tree, whereby defoliation is reduced.
- 28. The method of claim 27, wherein the an α2-adrenergic receptor agonist is selected from the group consisting of clonidine, guanfacine, brimonidine, and guanabenz.
- 29. The method of claim 27, wherein the defoliation is the result of a causative agent selected from the group consisting of an abscission agent, a thinning agent, an herbicide, a pesticide, an antimicrobial agent, a fungicide, a fertilizer, and a plant hormone.
- 30. The method of claim 29, wherein the α2-adrenergic receptor agonist, adrenergic inhibitor, or combination thereof is administered simultaneously with a causative agent.
- 31. The method of claim 29, wherein the α2-adrenergic receptor agonist, adrenergic inhibitor, or combination thereof, is administered before or after the causative agent.
- 32. The method of claim 27, wherein the adrenergic inhibitor is selected from the group consisting of guanethidine, bethanidine, guanadrel, and debrisoquine.
- 33. The method of claim 27, wherein the tree is citrus.
- 34. The method of claim 33, wherein the citrus is orange.
- 35. The method of claim 27, wherein the tree is apple or cherry.
