Claims
- 1. A method of extinguishing a fire comprising applying to said fire at least one nonflammable composition comprising a fluorinated ketone compound containing up to two hydrogen atoms and having a boiling point in a range of about 0° C. to about 150° C., in an amount sufficient to extinguish the fire.
- 2. The method of claim 1, wherein the fluorinated ketone further contains up to two halogen atoms selected from the group consisting of chlorine, bromine, iodine, and a mixture thereof.
- 3. The method of claim 1, wherein the composition further comprises at least one co-extinguishing agent selected from the group consisting of hydrofluorocarbons, hydrochlorofluorocarbons, perfluorocarbons, perfluoropolyethers, hydrofluoroethers, hydrofluoropolyethers, chlorofluorocarbons, bromofluorocarbons, bromochlorofluorocarbons, iodofluorocarbons, hydrobromofluorocarbons, hydrobromocarbons, and mixtures thereof.
- 4. The method of claim 1, wherein the fluorinated ketone has a total of 4 to 8 carbon atoms.
- 5. The method of claim 1, wherein the fluorinated ketone has a boiling point of about 0° C. to about 110° C.
- 6. The method of claim 1, wherein the fluorinated ketone has a boiling point of about 0° C. to about 75° C.
- 7. The method of claim 1, wherein the fluorinated ketone is at least one compound selected from the group consisting of CF3CF2C(O)CF(CF3)2, (CF3)2CFC(O)CF(CF3)2, CF3(CF2)2C(O)CF(CF3)2, CF3(CF2)3C(O)CF(CF3)2, CF3(CF2)5C(O)CF3, CF3CF2C(O)CF2CF2CF3, CF3C(O)CF(CF3)2, perfluorocyclohexanone, and mixtures thereof.
- 8. The method of claim 1, wherein the fluorinated ketone is C2F5C(O)CF(CF3)2.
- 9. A fire extinguishing composition comprising:
(a) at least one fluorinated ketone containing up to two hydrogen atoms and having a boiling point of about 0° C. to about 150° C.; and (b) at least one co-extinguishing agent selected from the group consisting of hydrofluorocarbons, hydrochlorofluorocarbons, perfluorocarbons, perfluoropolyethers, hydrofluoroethers, hydrofluoropolyethers, chlorofluorocarbons, bromofluorocarbons, bromochlorofluorocarbons, iodofluorocarbons, hydrobromofluorocarbons, hydrobromocarbons, and mixtures thereof; wherein (a) and (b) are in an amount sufficient to extinguish the fire.
- 10. The composition of claim 9, wherein (a) and (b) are in a weight ratio of about 9:1 to about 1:9.
- 11. The composition of claim 9, wherein the fluorinated ketone further contains up to two halogen atoms selected from the group consisting of chlorine, bromine, iodine, and a mixture thereof
- 12. The composition of claim 9, wherein the fluorinated ketone has a total of 4 to 8 carbon atoms.
- 13. The composition of claim 9, wherein the fluorinated ketone has a boiling point of about 0° C. to about 110° C.
- 14. The composition of claim 9, wherein the fluorinated ketone has a boiling point of about 0° C. to about 75° C.
- 15. The composition of claim 9, wherein the fluorinated ketone is at least one compound selected from the group consisting of CF3CF2C(O)CF(CF3)2, (CF3)2CFC(O)CF(CF3)2, CF3(CF2)2C(O)CF(CF3)2, CF3(CF2)3C(O)CF(CF3)2, CF3(CF2)5C(O)CF3, CF3CF2C(O)CF2CF2CF3, CF3C(O)CF(CF3)2, perfluorocyclohexanone, and mixtures thereof.
- 16. The composition of claim 9, wherein the fluorinated ketone is C2F5C(O)CF(CF3)2.
- 17. The composition of claim 9, wherein the co-extinguishing agent is selected from the group consisting of CF3CH2CF3, C5F11H, C6F13H, C4F9H, CF3CFHCFHCF2CF3, H(CF2)4H, CF3H, C2F5H, CF3CFHCF3, CF3CF2CF2H, CF3CHCl2, CF3CHClF, CF3CHF2, CF4, C2F6, C3F8, C4F10, C6F14, C3F7OCH3, C4F9OCH3, F(C3F6O)CF2H, F(C3F6O)2CF2H, HCF2O(CF2CF2O)CF2H, HCF2O(CF2CF2O)2CF2H, HCF2O(CF2O)(CF2CF2O)CF2H, C2F5Cl, CF3Br, CF2ClBr, CF3I, CF2HBr, n-C3H7Br, and CF2BrCF2Br, and mixtures thereof
- 18. A method of preventing fires or deflagration in an air-containing enclosed area containing combustible materials comprising introducing into said area a non-flammable extinguishing composition comprising a fluorinated ketone compound containing up to two hydrogen atoms, optionally having up to two halogen atoms selected from chlorine, bromine, iodine and a mixture thereof, and optionally containing one or more catenated heteroatoms interrupting the carbon backbone of the fluorinated ketone, and maintaining said composition in an amount sufficient to suppress combustion of combustible materials in the enclosed area.
- 19. The method of claim 18, wherein the composition further comprises at least one co-extinguishing agent selected from the group consisting of hydrofluorocarbons, hydrochlorofluorocarbons, perfluorocarbons, perfluoropolyethers, hydrofluoroethers, hydrofluoropolyethers, chlorofluorocarbons, bromofluorocarbons, bromochlorofluorocarbons, iodofluorocarbons, hydrobromofluorocarbons, and mixtures thereof.
- 20. A compound of the formula (CF3)2CFC(O)CF2Cl.
- 21. A compound of the formula CF3OCF2CF2C(O)CF(CF3)2.
- 22. A fire extinguishing composition comprising a compound of the formula (CF3)2CFC(O)CF2Cl or CF3OCF2CF2C(O)CF(CF3)2 or a mixture thereof in an amount sufficient to extinguish a fire.
- 23. A process for removing dimeric or trimeric by-products from a fluorinated ketone, which comprises the step of treating said fluorinated ketone with an alkali metal permanganate in a suitable organic solvent at ambient or elevated temperatures.
- 24. The process of claim 23, where the step is carried out in a sealed vessel.
- 25. The process of claim 23 wherein the organic solvent contains acetic acid.
- 26. The process of claim 25 wherein the treating is run at an elevated temperature.
- 27. A process for reacting a acyl halide with hexafluoropropylene to make a fluorinated ketone having a minimum amount of dimer and trimer by-products comprising (a) charging an initial portion of acyl halide to a reactor vessel and (b) adding hexafluoropropylene and the remaining acyl halide continuously over an extended period of time or in small increments over an extended time period.
