Claims
- 1. An injectable, in situ crosslinkable composition which is suitable for in vivo administration into a patient comprising a biocompatible, naturally occurring polymer and a mixture of a hydrophilic crosslinking agent and a hydrophobic crosslinking agent, wherein the hydrophobic agent contains two or more succinimidyl groups, and wherein the hydrophilic crosslinking agent and the hydrophobic crosslinking agent are each capable of covalently bonding with the biocompatible, naturally occurring polymer in said suspension to form a crosslinked biomaterial composition.
- 2. The composition of claim 1, wherein the hydrophobic crosslinking agent is a polyacid.
- 3. The composition of claim 2, wherein the polyacid is selected from the group consisting of trimethylpropane-based tricarboxylic acid, di(trimethylol propane)-based tricarboxylic acid, heptanedioic acid, octanedioic acid, and hexadecanedioic acid.
- 4. The composition of claim 2, wherein the hydrophobic crosslinking agent has two, three, or four succinimidyl groups.
- 5. The composition of claim 1, wherein the biomaterial is collagen.
- 6. The composition of claim 5, wherein the collagen is fibrillar collagen.
- 7. The composition of claim 5, wherein the collagen is nonfibrillar collagen.
- 8. The composition of claim 7, wherein the nonfibrillar collagen is a chemically derivatized collagen selected from the group consisting of succinylated collagen and methylated collagen.
- 9. The composition of claim 1, wherein the hydrophobic crosslinking agent is disuccinimidyl suberate.
