Claims
- 1. A method for the treatment or prophylaxis of a disease or disorder selected from the group consisting of pain, inflammation and ulcers, by the administration to a mammal suffering from said disease or disorder of an effective amount of an active compound, wherein said active compound is selected from the group consisting of compounds of formula (I): ##STR10## in which: R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 are independently selected from the group consisting of: hydrogen atoms; C.sub.1 -C.sub.25 alkyl groups; substituted C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkyl groups having at least one substituent selected from the group consisting of substituents (a), defined below; C.sub.3 -C.sub.8 cycloalkyl groups; C.sub.2 -C.sub.6 alkenyl groups; aralkyl groups in which the alkyl part is C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 and the aryl part is C.sub.6 -C.sub.10 and is unsubstituted or has at least one substituent selected from the group consisting of substituents (b), defined below; arylalkenyl groups in which the aryl part is a C.sub.6 -C.sub.10 aryl group which is unsubstituted or has at least one substituent selected from the group consisting of substituents (b), defined below, and the alkenyl part is C.sub.2 -C.sub.3 alkenyl; C.sub.6 -C.sub.10 aryl groups; C.sub.6 -C.sub.10 aryl groups having at least one substituent selected from the group consisting of substituents (b), defined below; aromatic heterocyclic groups which have from 5 to 8 ring atoms of which from 1 to 3 are hetero-atoms selected from the group consisting of nitrogen, oxygen and sulfur hetero-atoms, said group being unsubstituted or having at least one substituent selected from the group consisting of substituents (b), defined below, and being monocyclic or being fused to a benzene ring; cyano groups; and halogen atoms;
- R.sup.3 represents: a hydrogen atom; a C.sub.1 -C.sub.25 alkyl group; a substituted C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkyl group having at least one substituent selected from the group consisting of substituents (a), defined below; an aralkyl group in which the alkyl part is C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 and the aryl part is C.sub.6 -C.sub.10 and is unsubstituted or has at least one substituent selected from the group consisting of substituents (b), defined below; a C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 aliphatic carboxylic acyl group; or an aromatic carboxylic acyl group in which the aryl part is a C.sub.6 -C.sub.10 carbocyclic aryl group which is unsubstituted or has at least one substituent selected from the group consisting of substituents (b), defined below;
- R.sup.4 and R.sup.5 are independently selected from the group consisting of: hydrogen atoms; C.sub.1 -C.sub.25 alkyl groups; substituted C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkyl groups having at least one substituent selected from the group consisting of substituents (a), defined below; C.sub.3 -C.sub.8 cycloalkyl groups; C.sub.2 -C.sub.6 alkenyl groups; aralkyl groups in which the alkyl part is C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 and the aryl part is C.sub.6 -C.sub.10 and is unsubstituted or has at least one substituent selected from the group consisting of substituents (b), defined below; arylalkenyl groups in which the aryl part is a C.sub.6 -C.sub.10 aryl group which is unsubstituted or has at least one substituent selected from the group consisting of substituents (b), defined below, and the alkenyl part is C.sub.2 -C.sub.3 alkenyl; C.sub.6 -C.sub.10 aryl groups; C.sub.6 -C.sub.10 aryl groups having at least one substituent selected from the group consisting of substituents (b), defined below; and aromatic heterocyclic groups which have from 5 to 8 ring atoms of which from 1 to 3 are hetero-atoms selected from the group consisting of nitrogen, oxygen and sulfur hetero-atoms, said group being unsubstituted or having at least one substituent selected from the group consisting of substituents (b), defined below, and being monocyclic or being fused to a benzene ring;

- hydroxy groups, halogen atoms, carboxy groups, cyano groups, C.sub.2 -C.sub.7 alkoxycarbonyl groups and aromatic heterocyclic groups which have from 5 to 8 ring atoms of which from 1 to 3 are hetero-atoms selected from the group consisting of nitrogen, oxygen and sulfur hetero-atoms, said group being unsubstituted or having at least one substituent selected from the group consisting of substituents (b), defined below, and being monocyclic or being fused to a benzene ring;

- and a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof;
- with the proviso that when at least one of R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 represents the thienyl group, at least one of the other group of R.sup.1, R.sup.2, R.sup.3, R.sup.4, and substituents (a) represents an aromatic heterocyclic group other than thienyl.
- 2. The method of claim 1 in which:
- R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 are independently selected from the group consisting of: hydrogen atoms; C.sub.1 -C.sub.25 alkyl groups; substituted C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkyl groups having at least one substituent selected from the group consisting of substituents (a), defined below; C.sub.3 -C.sub.8 cycloalkyl groups; C.sub.2 -C.sub.6 alkenyl groups; aralkyl groups in which the alkyl part is C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 and the aryl part is C.sub.6 -C.sub.10 and is unsubstituted or has at least one substituent selected from the group consisting of substituents (b), defined below; arylalkenyl groups in which the aryl part is a C.sub.6 -C.sub.10 aryl group which is unsubstituted or has at least one substituent selected from the group consisting of substituents (b), defined below, and the alkenyl part is C.sub.2 -C.sub.3 alkenyl; C.sub.6 -C.sub.10 aryl groups; C.sub.6 -C.sub.10 aryl groups having at least one substituent selected from the group consisting of substituents (b), defined below; aromatic heterocyclic groups, defined below; cyano groups; and halogen atoms;

The method of claim 2 wherein R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 are independently selected from the group consisting of: hydrogen atoms; C.sub.1 -C.sub.11 alkyl groups; substituted C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkyl groups having at least one substituent selected from the group consisting of substituents (a.sup.1), defined below; C.sub.3 -C.sub.6 cycloalkyl groups; C.sub.2 -C.sub.6 alkenyl groups; aralkyl groups in which the alkyl part is C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 and the aryl part is a phenyl group which is unsubstituted or has at least one substituent selected from the group consisting of substituents (b.sup.1), defined below; phenylalkenyl groups in which the phenyl part is unsubstituted or has at least one substituent selected from the group consisting of substituents (b.sup.1), defined below, and the alkenyl part is C.sub.2 -C.sub.3 alkenyl; C.sub.6 -C.sub.10 aryl groups; C.sub.6 -C.sub.10 aryl groups having at least one substituent selected from the group consisting of substituents (b.sup.1), defined below; said aromatic heterocyclic groups; and halogen atoms;

- R.sup.4 and R.sup.5 are independently selected from the group consisting of: hydrogen atoms; C.sub.1 -C.sub.11 alkyl groups; substituted C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkyl groups having at least one substituent selected from the group consisting of substituents (a.sup.1), defined below; C.sub.3 -C.sub.6 cycloalkyl groups; C.sub.2 -C.sub.6 alkenyl groups; aralkyl groups in which the alkyl part is C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 and the aryl part is a phenyl group which is unsubstituted or has at least one substituent selected from the group consisting of substituents (b.sup.1), defined below; phenylalkenyl groups in which the phenyl part is unsubstituted or has at least one substituent selected from the group consisting of substituents (b.sup.1), defined below, and the alkenyl part is C.sub.2 -C.sub.3 alkenyl; C.sub.6 -C.sub.10 aryl groups; C.sub.6 -C.sub.10 aryl groups having at least one substituent selected from the group consisting of substituents (b.sup.1), defined below; and said aromatic heterocyclic groups;
- substituents (a.sup.1):
- hydroxy groups, halogen atoms, carboxy groups, cyano groups, C.sub.2 -C.sub.4 alkoxycarbonyl groups and said aromatic heterocyclic groups;
- substituents (b.sup.1):
- C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl groups; halogen atoms; C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkoxy groups; phenoxy groups; aralkyloxy groups in which the alkyl part is C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 and the aryl part is an unsubstituted phenyl group; C.sub.2 -C.sub.6 aliphatic carboxylic acyl groups; benzoyl groups which are unsubstituted or have at least one substituent selected from the group consisting of C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl groups, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkoxy groups and halogen atoms; C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 aliphatic carboxylic acyloxy groups; benzoyloxy groups which are unsubstituted or have at least one substituent selected from the group consisting of C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl groups, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkoxy groups and halogen atoms; amino groups; C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkylamino groups; dialkylamino groups in which each alkyl part is C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 ; C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 aliphatic carboxylic acylamino groups; benzoylamino groups which are unsubstituted or have at least one substituent selected from the group consisting of C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl groups, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkoxy groups and halogen atoms; C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 haloalkyl groups; carbamoyl groups; alkylcarbamoyl and dialkylcarbamoyl groups in which the or each alkyl group is C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 ; carboxy groups; and C.sub.2 -C.sub.5 alkoxycarbonyl groups.
- 7. The method of claim 2, wherein:
- R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 are independently selected from the group consisting of: hydrogen atoms; C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkyl groups; substituted C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl groups having at least one substituent selected from the group consisting of substituents (a.sup.2), defined below; benzyl groups in which the phenyl part is unsubstituted or has at least one substituent selected from the group consisting of substituents (b.sup.2), defined below; cinnamyl groups; phenyl groups; naphthyl groups; phenyl or naphthyl groups having at least one substituent selected from the group consisting of substituents (b.sup.2), defined below; said aromatic heterocyclic groups; and halogen atoms;
- R.sup.3 represents: a hydrogen atom; a C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkyl group; a substituted C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl group having at least one substituent selected from the group consisting of substituents (a.sup.2), defined below; a benzyl group which is unsubstituted or has at least one substituent selected from the group consisting of substituents (b.sup.2), defined below; a C.sub.2 -C.sub.4 aliphatic carboxylic acyl group; or a benzoyl group which is unsubstituted or has at least one substituent selected from the group consisting of substituents (b.sup.2), defined below;
- R.sup.4 and R.sup.5 are independently selected from the group consisting of: hydrogen atoms; C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkyl groups; substituted C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl groups having at least one substituent selected from the group consisting of substituents (a.sup.2), defined below; benzyl groups which are unsubstituted or have at least one substituent selected from the group consisting of substituents (b.sup.2), defined below; cinnamyl groups; phenyl groups; naphthyl groups; phenyl or naphthyl groups having at least one substituent selected from the group consisting of substituents (b.sup.2), defined below; and said aromatic heterocyclic groups;
- substituents (a.sup.2):
- a group selected from the group consisting of hydroxy groups, halogen atoms, cyano groups, carboxy groups, C.sub.2 -C.sub.4 alkoxycarbonyl groups and said aromatic heterocyclic groups;
- substituents (b.sup.2):
- a group selected from the group consisting of C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl groups; halogen atoms; C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkoxy groups; trifluoromethyl groups; hydroxy groups; cyano groups; amino groups; carbamoyl groups; phenoxy groups; C.sub.2 -C.sub.6 aliphatic carboxylic acyl groups; benzoyl groups which are unsubstituted or have at least one substituent selected from the group consisting of C.sub.1 -C.sub.2 alkyl groups, C.sub.1 -C.sub.2 alkoxy groups; halogen atoms; C.sub.2 -C.sub.4 aliphatic carboxylic acyloxy groups; benzoyloxy groups which are unsubstituted or have at least one substituent selected from the group consisting of C.sub.1 -C.sub.2 alkyl groups, C.sub.1 -C.sub.2 alkoxy groups and halogen atoms; carboxy groups; and C.sub.2 -C.sub.5 alkoxycarbonyl groups.
- 8. The method of claim 2, wherein:
- R.sup.1 represents a hydrogen atom or a C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkyl group;
- R.sup.2 represents: a phenyl group; a substituted phenyl group having at least one substituent selected from the group consisting of substituents (b.sup.2), defined above; or said aromatic heterocyclic group;
- R.sup.3 represents: a hydrogen atom; a C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl group; a substituted C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl group having at least one substituent selected from the group consisting of substituents (a.sup.2), defined above; a C.sub.2 -C.sub.4 aliphatic carboxylic acyl group; or a benzoyl group which is unsubstituted or has at least one substituent selected from the group consisting of substituents (b.sup.2), defined below;
- R.sup.4 and R.sup.5 are independently selected from the group consisting of: hydrogen atoms; C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkyl groups; substituted C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl groups having at least one substituent selected from the group consisting of substituents (a.sup.2), defined above; and said aromatic heterocyclic groups.
- 9. The method of claim 2, wherein:
- R.sup.1 represents: a phenyl group; a substituted phenyl group having at least one substituent selected from the group consisting of substituents (b.sup.2), defined above; or said aromatic heterocyclic group;
- R.sup.2 represents a hydrogen atom or a C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkyl group;
- R.sup.3 represents: a hydrogen atom; a C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl group; a substituted C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl group having at least one substituent selected from the group consisting of substituents (a.sup.2), defined above; a C.sub.2 -C.sub.4 aliphatic carboxylic acyl group; or a benzoyl group which is unsubstituted or has at least one substituent selected from the group consisting of substituents (b.sup.2), defined below;
- R.sup.4 and R.sup.5 are independently selected from the group consisting of: hydrogen atoms; C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkyl groups; substituted C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl groups having at least one substituent selected from the group consisting of substituents (a.sup.2), defined above; and said aromatic heterocyclic groups.
- 10. The method of claim 2, wherein:
- R.sup.1 represents a hydrogen atom or a methyl or ethyl group;
- R.sup.2 represents: a phenyl group; a substituted phenyl group having at least one substituent selected from the group consisting of methyl groups, chlorine atoms, trifluoromethyl groups and methoxy groups; a furyl group; or a furyl group having at least one substituent selected from the group consisting of methyl groups, methoxy groups, chlorine atoms and trifluoromethyl groups;
- R.sup.3 represents: a hydrogen atom; a C.sub.1 -C.sub.2 alkyl group; a C.sub.2 -C.sub.4 aliphatic carboxylic acyl group; a benzyl group; a cyanomethyl group; a (C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkoxy) carbonylmethyl group; or a benzoyl group;
- R.sup.4 and R.sup.5 are independently selected from the group consisting of: hydrogen atoms; C.sub.1 -C.sub.2 alkyl groups; and substituted C.sub.1 -C.sub.2 alkyl groups having at least one substituent selected from the group consisting of C.sub.2 -C.sub.3 alkoxycarbonyl groups.
- 11. The method of claim 2, wherein:
- R.sup.1 represents: a phenyl group; a substituted phenyl group having at least one substituent selected from the group consisting of methyl groups, chlorine atoms, trifluoromethyl groups and methoxy groups; a furyl group; or a furyl group having at least one substituent selected from the group consisting of methyl groups, methoxy groups, chlorine atoms and trifluoromethyl groups;
- R.sup.2 represents a hydrogen atom or a methyl or ethyl group;
- R.sup.3 represents: a hydrogen atom; a C.sub.1 -C.sub.2 alkyl group; a benzyl group; a cyanomethyl group; a (C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkoxy)carbonylmethyl group; a C.sub.2 -C.sub.4 aliphatic carboxylic acyl group; or a benzoyl group;
- R.sup.4 and R.sup.5 are independently selected from the group consisting of: hydrogen atoms; C.sub.1 -C.sub.2 alkyl groups; and substituted C.sub.1 -C.sub.2 alkyl groups having at least one substituent selected from the group consisting of C.sub.2 -C.sub.3 alkoxycarbonyl groups.
- 12. The method of claim 2, wherein said active compound is selected from the group consisting of:
- 6-phenyl-1H-imidazo�1,2-b!pyrazole;
- 6-(p-chlorophenyl)-1H-imidazo�1,2-b!pyrazole;
- 7-methyl-6-phenyl-1H-imidazo�1,2-b!pyrazole;
- 7-phenyl-1H-imidazo�1,2-b!pyrazole;
- 6-methyl-7-phenyl-1H-imidazo�1,2-b!pyrazole;
- 6-methyl-7-(p-chlorophenyl)-1H-imidazo�1,2-b!pyrazole;
- 7-(p-methylphenyl)-1H-imidazo�1,2-b!pyrazole;
- and a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof.
