Claims
- 1. A method for preventing, retarding, arresting, or reversing wrinkles or atrophy in mammalian skin comprising treating the skin with a safe and effective amount of a composition comprising:
- (a) a safe and effective amount of salicylic acid,
- (b) a surfactant, and
- (c) a pharmaceutically-acceptable carrier.
- 2. A method for preventing, retarding, arresting, or reversing wrinkles or atrophy in mammalian skin and cleansing mammalian skin comprising treating the skin with a safe and effective amount of a composition comprising:
- (a) a safe and effective amount of salicylic acid,
- (b) a surfactant, and
- (c) a pharmaceutically-acceptable carrier.
- 3. A method according to claim 1 wherein said surfactant is selected from the group consisting of anionic surfactants, nonionic surfactants, zwitterionic surfactants, amphoteric surfactants, ampholytic surfactants, and mixtures thereof.
- 4. A method according to claim 2 wherein said surfactant is selected from the group consisting of anionic surfactants, nonionic surfactants, zwitterionic surfactants, amphoteric surfactants, ampholytic surfactants, and mixtures thereof.
- 5. The method of claim 1 wherein the composition comprises from about 0.01% to about 50% of salicylic acid.
- 6. The method of claim 1 wherein the composition comprises from about 0.1% to about 20% of salicylic acid.
- 7. The method of claim 1 wherein the composition comprises from about 0.2% to about 5% of salicylic acid.
- 8. The method of claim 1 wherein the composition comprises from about 1% to about 5% of salicylic acid.
- 9. The method of claim 1 wherein the composition comprises about 2% of salicylic acid.
- 10. The method of claim 5 wherein the pharmaceutically-acceptable carrier is a topical carrier.
- 11. The method of claim 10 wherein the carrier comprises water.
- 12. The method of claim 11 wherein the carrier comprises a hydroalcoholic solvent.
- 13. The method of claim 12 wherein the carrier comprises water and an alcohol selected from the group consisting of ethanol, isopropanol and mixtures thereof.
- 14. The method of claim 11 wherein the treatment of the skin with the composition is chronic.
- 15. The method of claim 14 wherein the treatment of the skin with the composition is for a period of at least about three weeks comprising application of the composition from about once per week to about two times daily.
- 16. The method of claim 1 wherein the composition has a pH of from about 2 to about 4.
- 17. The method of claim 1 wherein the composition has a pH of from about 2 to about 3.5.
- 18. The method of claim 11 wherein the composition has a pH of from about 2 to about 4.
- 19. The method of claim 11 wherein the composition has a pH of from about 2 to about 3.5.
- 20. The method of claim 18 wherein the composition comprises from about 0.2% to about 5% of salicylic acid.
- 21. The method of claim 18 wherein the composition comprises from about 1% to about 5% of salicylic acid.
- 22. The method of claim 18 wherein the composition comprises about 2% of salicylic acid.
- 23. The method of claim 1 wherein said surfactant is selected from the group consisting of anionic surfactants, nonionic surfactants, zwitterionic surfactants, amphoteric surfactants, ampholytic surfactants, and mixtures thereof.
