Claims
- 1. A method for recording and indexing television programs on video recording media comprising:
storing a plurality of television program listings in memory, each television program listing including data indicative of the title, channel and start time for at least one television program; recording on the video recording media a television program corresponding to one of the plurality of television program listings; and storing the title from the memory corresponding to the recorded television program in a directory of programs recorded on the video recording media.
- 2. The method of claim 1 wherein storing the title further comprises storing data indicative of a location on the video recording media at which the television program is recorded.
- 3. The method of claim 1 wherein the storing of the title in the directory of programs recorded on the video recording media comprises storing the title in a memory separate from the video recording media.
- 4. The method of claim 1 wherein the storing of the title in the directory of programs recorded on the video recording media comprises storing the title on the video recording media separate from the television program.
- 5. The method of claim 1 further comprising:
displaying on a display monitor a plurality of program listings stored in memory; selecting one of the displayed program listings for recording;
- 6. The method of claim 5 wherein selecting comprised providing a movable cursor on the display monitor and moving the cursor on the monitor to select one of the displayed program listings.
- 7. The method of claim 1, in which storing a plurality of television program listings comprising storing the plurality of television program listings in one section of memory.
- 8. The method of claim 7, in which the directory is stored in a second section of memory.
- 9. A system for recording and indexing television programs on video recording media comprising:
a listings memory in which a plurality of television program listings is stored, each television program listing including data indicative of the title, channel and start time for at least one television program; a video recorder that records a television program corresponding to one of the plurality of television program listings onto video recording media; and a directory data store that receives the title from the listings memory corresponding to the recorded television program.
- 10. The system of claim 9 wherein the directory data store further receives data from the video recorder indicative of the location at which the television program was recorded.
- 11. The system of claim 10 wherein the directory data store comprises the video recording media wherein the data indicative of the location at which the television program was recorded is stored separate from the television program recorded on the video recording media.
- 12. The system of claim 9 wherein the directory data store comprises memory separate from the video recording media.
- 13. The system of claim 9 wherein the directory data store comprises the listings memory.
- 14. The system of claim 9, further comprising a single memory that comprises a first section comprising the listings memory and a second section comprising the directory data store.
- 15. The system of claim 9 further comprising:
a display generator that renders a display of a plurality of program listings stored in memory; and an input for receiving the selection of at least one of the displayed program listings for recording.
- 16. The system of claim 15 wherein the display generator further renders a movable cursor on the display monitor and the input further receives commands to move the cursor on the display monitor to select at least one of the displayed program listings.
- 17. A system for recording and indexing television programs on video recording media comprising:
listings means for storing a plurality of television program listings, each television program listing including data indicative of the title, channel and start time for at least one television program; video recording means for recording a television program corresponding to one of the plurality of television program listings onto video recording media; and directory means for storing the title from the listings means corresponding to the recorded television program.
- 18. The system of claim 17 wherein the directory means further receives data from the video recording means indicative of the location at which the television program was recorded.
- 19. The system of claim 18 wherein the directory means comprises the video recording media wherein the data indicative of the location at which the television program was recorded is stored separate from the television program recorded on the video recording media.
- 20. The system of claim 17 wherein the directory means comprises memory separate from the video recording media.
- 21. The system of claim 17 wherein the directory means comprises the listings memory.
- 22. The system of claim 17, further comprising a single memory means that comprises a first section comprising the listings means and a second section comprising the directory means.
- 23. The system of claim 17 further comprising:
display means for generating a display of a plurality of program listings stored in memory; and input means for receiving the selection of at least one of the displayed program listings for recording.
- 24. The system of claim 23 wherein the display means further generates the display of a movable cursor on the display monitor and the input means further receives commands to move the cursor on the display monitor to select at least one of the displayed program listings.
