Claims
- 1. A networked product sampling system comprising:
a plurality of sampling stations distributed at various locations in a retail site, each sampling station including a display and an audio output device for playing samples of product content of products for sale by the retail site; and a database coupled to said plurality of sampling stations through a retail site server and storing sample content and meta data related to products for sale at said retail site; wherein each of said sampling stations is associated with a unique location ID identifying the location of the associated sampling station within the retail site, such that the retail site server determines particular meta data to be sent to a sampling station to be displayed in accordance with the unique location ID associated with that sampling station.
- 2. The networked product sampling system according to claim 1, wherein said database further includes a plurality of different attractant media loops for output by said sampling stations when not being used by a customer, and said retail site server determines particular attractant media loops to be outputted at a particular sampling station in accordance with the unique location ID associated with that sampling station.
- 3. The networked product sampling system according to claim 1, wherein said system is linked to a communication network linking a plurality of retail sites to a central server of a merchant.
- 4. The networked product sampling system according to claim 3, wherein said system is linked to a plurality of third party content and service providers over said communication network.
- 5. The networked product sampling system according to claim 1, wherein said particular meta data comprises product titles of products located within a predetermined zone of the location of the sampling station in said retail site.
- 6. The networked product sampling system according to claim 1, wherein said particular meta data comprises a list of top selling products.
- 7. The networked product sampling system according to claim 1, wherein said particular meta data comprises a list of sales associates' recommended products.
- 8. A user-personalized product sampling and recommendation system, comprising:
a database storing individual customer profile data files each associated with a unique customer identification number identifying a customer to whom the customer profile data file relates, wherein said customer profile data includes customer preferences regarding categories or genres of products available for purchase by said customer, said database further including sample content and meta data related to products for sale at a retail site; a plurality of sampling stations distributed at various locations in said retail site, each sampling station including a display and an audio output device for playing samples of product content of products available for purchase by said customer, and an input mechanism for enabling a customer to input to said station a unique customer identification number assigned to said customer; and a server that receives a unique customer identification number from a sampling station, retrieves from said database corresponding customer profile data, and generates customer-specific information for display by the sampling station sending the customer identification number according to the retrieved customer profile data.
- 9. The user-personalized product sampling and recommendation system according to claim 8, wherein said customer-specific information includes personal customer information.
- 10. The user-personalized product sampling and recommendation system according to claim 8, wherein said customer-specific information includes bonus point information reflecting the total number of bonus points awarded to a customer, which bonus points may be redeemed by the customer for a certain predetermined benefit.
- 11. The user-personalized product sampling and recommendation system according to claim 8, wherein said customer-specific information includes customer-personalized product information selectable by the customer for content sampling at said sampling station, said customer-personalized product information being generated based on customer preferences stored in said customer profile.
- 12. The user-personalized product sampling and recommendation system according to claim 8, wherein said customer-specific information includes a customer wish list comprising a list of products desired by a customer, as inputted to the system by the customer and stored in said customer profile.
- 13. The user-personalized product sampling and recommendation system according to claim 12, wherein customers may access information stored in said database through an Internet connection.
- 14. The user-personalized product sampling and recommendation system according to claim 13, further including a server for allowing a customer to instant message certain information in said customer profile to a third party over the Internet.
- 15. A networked product sampling system comprising:
a plurality of sampling stations distributed at various locations in a retail site, each sampling station including a display and an audio output device for playing samples of product content of products for sale by the retail site; a database coupled to said plurality of sampling stations through a retail site server and storing sample content and meta data related to products for sale at said retail site, said retail site server being connected to an external communication network; and a point-of-sale (POS) database storing sales and inventory data for all products being sold by said retail site; wherein said retail site is one of a plurality of retail sites of a merchant, and is identified by a unique ID identifying the location of the retail site, wherein said retail site server determines particular meta data and content samples to be stored by said database in accordance with inventory data received from said POS database, sends a request for said particular meta data and content samples to a merchant server, and said merchant stores the identity of meta data and content samples contained at each retail site in association with the unique ID of each retail site.
- 16. The networked product sampling system of claim 15, wherein said meta data and content samples are retrieved over said communication network from a third party provider.
- 17. The networked product sampling system of claim 15, wherein a sampling station may retrieve sample content from a third party provider over said communication network through said central server.
- 18. The networked product sampling system of claim 15, wherein said merchant server periodically receives new meta data and content sample data from a third party provider, and determines specific new meta data and content sample data to be sent to each retail site based on the stored meta data and content sample information stored in association with the unique ID of each retail site.
- 19. The networked product sampling system of claim 18, wherein said merchant server creates individual update files for each retail site based on the result of said determination, and transmits said update files to corresponding retail sites over said communication network.
- 20. A networked product sampling and purchasing system comprising:
a plurality of sampling stations distributed at various locations in a retail site associated with a merchant having a plurality of retail sites and a central warehouse storing product inventory, each sampling station including a display and an audio output device for playing samples of product content of products for sale by the retail site, and at least one sampling station including an input mechanism enabling a customer to place a purchase order for a product item; a database coupled to said plurality of sampling stations through a retail site server and storing sample content and meta data related to products for sale at said retail site, said retail site server being connected to an external communication network; and a point-of-sale (POS) database storing sales and inventory data for all products being sold by said retail site; wherein said at least one sampling station determines, in response to placement of an order by a customer, whether the ordered product item is in stock by querying said POS database, and if so informing the customer and allowing the customer to receive said product item at the retail site; if said at least one sampling station determines that the ordered product item is not stock, determining whether the product item is in inventory at said warehouse by querying a warehouse inventory database through said external communication network, and if so informing the customer and allowing the customer to order the product item from the warehouse.
- 21. The networked product sampling and purchasing system according to claim 20, wherein said at least one sampling station provides the customer with the ability to request shipment of said order to the retail site for pickup.
- 22. The networked product sampling and purchasing system according to claim 20, wherein said at least one sampling station provides the customer with the ability to request shipment of said order to a location specified by the customer.
- 23. The networked product sampling and purchasing system according to claim 20, wherein if said at least one sampling station determines that the ordered product item is not in inventory in said warehouse, said at least one sampling station sends said order to a third party order fulfillment provider over said external communication network.
- 24. A system for providing product recommendations to a customer, comprising:
a plurality of sampling stations distributed at various locations in a retail site, each sampling station including a display and an audio output device for playing samples of product content of products for sale by the retail site, and including an input device that enables a customer to input a product's identification information for retrieval of said content samples; a retail site server; a recommendation rules database; a content database coupled to said plurality of sampling stations through said retail site server and storing sample content and meta data related to products for sale at said retail site; and a POS database coupled to said retail site server and storing inventory data of products which are in stock at said retail site; wherein said retail site server generates a first list of recommended products for sampling by a customer based on a product ID input by said customer at a sampling station of a product that the customer wishes to sample, a recommendation rule retrieved from said recommendation rules database, and based on said stored inventory data.
- 25. The system of claim 24, wherein said input device is a bar code scanner.
- 26. The system of claim 24, wherein said server generates a subsequent list of recommended products for sampling by said customer based on a product selected by said customer from said first list.
- 27. A system for promoting sales of products at a; retail site, comprising:
a display device for displaying product promotional content; a retail site server; a promotion rules database; a content database storing promotional content related to products for sale at said retail site; and a POS database coupled to said retail site server and storing inventory data of products which are in stock at said retail site; wherein said retail site server generates a promotion list of at least one product based on a promotion rule retrieved from said promotion rules database, and based on inventory data from said POS database, retrieves content associated with said promotion list from said content database, and sends said retrieved content to said display device.
- 28. The system of claim 27, wherein said display device is a large screen display.
- 29. The system of claim 27, further including a plurality of sampling stations distributed at various locations in a retail site, each sampling station including a display and an audio output device for playing samples of product content of products for sale by the retail site, and including an input device that enables a customer to input a product's identification information for retrieval of said content samples, and wherein said retail site server sends said retrieved content to a plurality of said sampling stations simultaneously.
- 30. A system for maintaining and providing access to a customer profile, comprising:
a database storing individual customer profile data files each associated with a unique customer identification number identifying a customer to whom the customer profile data file relates, wherein said customer profile data includes customer preferences regarding categories or genres of products available for purchase by said customer; a server that receives a unique customer identification number from a communication channel, retrieves from said database corresponding customer profile data, and sends customer profile data corresponding to said unique customer identification information for display at a remote display device coupled to said communication channel.
- 31. The user-personalized product sampling and recommendation system according to claim 30, wherein said customer-specific information includes personal customer information.
- 32. The user-personalized product sampling and recommendation system according to claim 30, wherein said customer-specific information includes bonus point information reflecting, the total number of bonus points awarded to a customer, which bonus points may be redeemed by the customer for a certain predetermined benefit.
- 33. The user-personalized product sampling and recommendation system according, to claim 30, wherein said customer-specific information includes customer-personalized product information selectable by the customer for content sampling at a sampling station, said customer-personalized product information being generated based on customer preferences stored in said customer profile.
- 34. The user-personalized product sampling and recommendation system according to claim 30, wherein said customer-specific information includes a customer wish list comprising a list of products desired by a customer, as inputted to the system by the customer and stored in said customer profile.
- 35. The user-personalized product sampling and recommendation system according to claim 34, wherein said communication channel is an Internet connection.
- 36. The user-personalized product sampling and recommendation system according to claim 34, wherein said communication channel is a network connection.
- 37. The user-personalized product sampling and recommendation system according to claim 34, wherein said remote display device is a personal computer.
- 38. The user-personalized product sampling and recommendation system according to claim 34, wherein said remote display device is a PDA.
- 39. The user-personalized product sampling and recommendation system according to claim 34, wherein said remote display device is a mobile telephone.
- 40. The user-personalized product sampling and recommendation system according to claim 34, wherein said remote display device is a product content sampling station at a retail location.
