Claims
- 1. A method for indicating an undesirable condition in a space, said method comprising:establishing a carbon dioxide rate of change range or threshold level that indicates an undesirable carbon dioxide concentration; determining a rate of change of carbon dioxide concentration over a predetermined period of time in the space; determining whether said carbon dioxide rate of change concentration in the space falls within said rate of change range or rises above or falls below said carbon dioxide threshold level; and generating a signal when said carbon dioxide rate of change concentration in the space falls within said rate of change range or rises above or falls below said carbon dioxide threshold level.
- 2. The method according to claim 1 further comprising the step of determining carbon dioxide leakage conditions into the space.
- 3. The method according to claim 2, wherein the step of determining carbon dioxide leakage conditions includes:considering all sources of carbon dioxide that may enter the space, including ventilation of carbon dioxide into the space.
- 4. The method according to claim 1, wherein the step of establishing said carbon dioxide threshold level further comprises:setting said carbon dioxide threshold level to an upper limit that indicates displacement of oxygen.
- 5. The method according to claim 1, wherein the step of establishing said carbon dioxide rate of change range further comprises:setting said carbon dioxide rate of change range to 5 to 25 ppm over said predetermined period of time.
- 6. The method according to claim 1, wherein the step of determining a rate of change of carbon dioxide concentration in the space is accomplished in part by employing rate of change data resulting from predetermined factors.
- 7. The method according to claim 6, wherein said predetermined factors resulting in said carbon dioxide rate of change data includes calculations involving at least a volume of the space, assumptions for air leakage rates for the space, one of natural and mechanical methods of ventilation in the space, and carbon dioxide production rates for each occupant in the space.
- 8. The method according to claim 7, wherein said carbon dioxide production rates are related to a size of each occupant, age of each occupant, and activity level of each occupant.
- 9. The method according to claim 4, wherein when said rate of change of carbon dioxide concentration exceeds said upper limit, oxygen displacement by carbon dioxide is indicated.
- 10. The method according to claim 5, wherein when said carbon dioxide threshold level concentration either one of falls within said rate of change range of 5 to 25 ppm over said predetermined period of time, and drops below a carbon dioxide threshold level lower limit of 25 ppm, an undesirable carbon dioxide concentration is indicated.
- 11. The method according to claim 1, wherein the step of generating a signal includes:generating a signal and sending said signal to a device.
- 12. The method according to claim 1, wherein the step of generating a signal includes:generating a first signal only upon a single occurrence of detection of a predetermined rate of change value.
- 13. The method according to claim 1, wherein the step of generating a signal includes:generating a second signal once a predetermined rate of change value is detected over one or more periods.
- 14. The method according to claim 1, wherein different signals are generated for correspondingly different predetermined carbon dioxide rates of change values.
- 15. The method according to claim 1, wherein a signal is generated for one or more respective predetermined rate of change values.
- 16. The method according to claim 13, wherein said rate of change value is at least 50 ppm per minute.
- 17. The method according to claim 14, wherein said different carbon dioxide rate of change values increase from a lower value to a higher value.
- 18. The method according to claim 1, wherein said signal operates a vent.
- 19. The method according to claim 1, wherein said signal operates a fan.
- 20. A system for indicating an undesirable condition in a space, said system comprising:means for establishing a carbon dioxide rate of change range or threshold level that indicates an undesirable carbon dioxide concentration; means for determining a rate of change of carbon dioxide concentration over a predetermined period of time in the space; means for determining whether said carbon dioxide rate of change concentration in the space falls within said rate of change range or rises above or falls below said carbon dioxide threshold level; and means for generating a signal when said carbon dioxide rate of change concentration in the space falls within said rate of change range or rises above or falls below said carbon dioxide threshold level.
- 21. The system according to claim 20, further comprising means for determining carbon dioxide leakage conditions into the space.
- 22. The system according to claim 20, wherein said means for generating a signal generates a first signal only upon a single occurrence of detection of a predetermined rate of change value.
- 23. The system according to claim 20, wherein said means for generating a signal generates a second signal once a predetermined rate of change value is detected over one or more periods.
- 24. The system according to claim 20, wherein said means for generating a signal generates different signals for correspondingly different predetermined carbon dioxide rates of change values.
- 25. The system according to claim 20, wherein said means for generating a signal generates a signal for one or more respective predetermined rate of change values.
- 26. The system according to claim 20, wherein said means for generating a signal generates a signal to operate a fan.
- 27. The system according to claim 20, wherein said means for generating a signal generates a signal to operate a vent.
- 28. An apparatus for indicating an undesirable condition in a space comprising:an analyzer that establishes a carbon dioxide rate of change range or threshold level that indicates an undesirable carbon dioxide concentration; a rate of change determiner that determines a carbon dioxide rate of change of concentration over a predetermined period of time in the space, said rate of change determiner in communication with said analyzer; a threshold determiner that determines whether said carbon dioxide rate of change concentration in the space falls within said rate of change range or rises above or falls below said carbon dioxide threshold level, said threshold determiner in communication with said rate of change determiner; and a generator that generates a signal when said carbon dioxide rate of change concentration in the space falls within said rate of change range or rises above or falls below said carbon dioxide threshold level, said generator in communication with said threshold determiner.
- 29. The apparatus of claim 28 further comprising a carbon dioxide leakage determiner that determines carbon dioxide leakage conditions in the space, said carbon dioxide leakage detector in communication with said analyzer.
- 30. The apparatus of claim 28, wherein said generator generates a signal to operate a fan.
- 31. The apparatus of claim 28, wherein said generator generates a signal to operate a vent.
- 32. The apparatus of claim 28, wherein said generator generates a first signal only upon a single occurrence of detection of a predetermined rate of change value.
- 33. The apparatus of claim 28, wherein said generator generates a second signal once a predetermined rate of change value is detected over one or more periods.
- 34. The apparatus of claim 28 wherein said generator generates different signals for correspondingly different predetermined carbon dioxide rates of change values.
- 35. The apparatus of claim 28 wherein said generator generates a signal for one or more respective predetermined rate of change values.
- 36. The apparatus of claim 28 wherein said rate of change determiner determines a rate of change of carbon dioxide concentration in the space by employing rate of change data resulting from predetermined factors.

This application is a divisional application of Ser. No. 09/842,635 filed Apr. 27, 2001 now U.S. Pat. No. 6,615,646 which is hereby incorporated by reference herein. This application is related to application Ser. No. 09/004,142, entitled “Method for Detecting Venting of a Combustion Appliance Within An Improper Space”, filed Jan. 7, 1998, the disclosure which is incorporated herein by reference.
