Claims
- 1. A method for conserving power in a wireless communication device having at least one network interface, comprising the steps of:
providing a wireless communication system including a plurality of subnets; using a subnet relation database to determine foreign subnets said wireless communication device can access from a current subnet; and placing each respective network interface on said wireless communication device that cannot be used to communicate with said foreign subnets in a power-saving mode.
- 2. The method of claim 1, wherein said subnet relation database is located on a virtual operator server.
- 3. The method of claim 1, wherein each subnet is connected to a mobility agent server that monitors said wireless communication device.
- 4. The method of claim 1, further comprising the step of notifying a mobility agent server when said wireless communication device performs a handoff to said foreign subnet.
- 5. The method of claim 4, further comprising the step of notifying a virtual operator server of said handoff with said mobility agent server.
- 6. The method of claim 1, further comprising the step of sending a message with a virtual operator server to said wireless communication device that informs said wireless communication device which network interfaces may be placed in said power-saving mode.
- 7. The method of claim 1, wherein said subnet relation database includes connectivity information for each subnet in said plurality of subnets.
- 8. The method of claim 7, wherein said connectivity information comprises each subnet that said wireless communication device can handoff to from said current subnet.
- 9. The method of claim 1, further comprising the step of placing a respective network interface back in a normal mode if said wireless communication device performs a handoff to another subnet for which said wireless communication device could use said network interface.
- 10. A method of monitoring subnet relations in a wireless communication system, comprising the steps of:
providing a wireless communication device located in a first subnet; detecting when said wireless communication device executes a handoff to a second subnet; creating a subnet relation between said first subnet and said second subnet; and storing said subnet relation.
- 11. The method of claim 10, further comprising the step of notifying a mobility agent server when said wireless communication device makes said handoff.
- 12. The method of claim 11, further comprising the step of notifying a virtual operator of said handoff to said second subnet.
- 13. The method of claim 12, wherein said virtual operator server creates said subnet relation.
- 14. The method of claim 10, wherein said subnet relation is stored in a subnet relation database.
- 15. A subnet relationship monitoring system for a wireless communication system, comprising:
a wireless communication device with at least one network interface for connecting to a plurality of subnets; at least one mobility agent server connected to predetermined subnets within said plurality of subnets; a virtual operator server connected to each mobility agent server; and a subnet relation database located on said virtual operator server, wherein said virtual operator server is operable to use said subnet relation database to determine which network interfaces on said wireless communication device are active when said wireless communication device is located in a specific subnet.
- 16. The wireless communication system of claim 15, wherein said subnet relation database contains connectivity information for each respective subnet in said wireless communication system.
- 17. The wireless communication system of claim 16, wherein said connectivity information comprises each subnet that said wireless communication device can handoff to from within said specific subnet.
- 18. The wireless communication system of claim 15, wherein non-active network interfaces are placed in a power-saving mode by said wireless communication device.
- 19. A method for managing subnet relations in a wireless communication device including at least one network interface, comprising the steps of:
providing a plurality of access networks that include at least one subnet; connecting said wireless communication device to a respective subnet; determining which surrounding subnets that said wireless communication device is capable of performing a handoff to from within said respective subnet; and placing each network interface in a power-saving mode that cannot be used by any of said surrounding subnets.
- 20. The method of claim 19, further comprising the step of using a subnet relation database to determine which surrounding subnets said wireless communication device can handoff to from within said respective subnet.
- 21. The method of claim 19, wherein each subnet within said access networks is connected to a mobility agent server.
- 22. The method of claim 21, wherein each mobility agent server is connected to a virtual operator server.
- 23. The method of claim 22, wherein each said virtual operator server is responsible for generating a signal that is transmitted to said wireless communication device to place each network interface in a power-saving mode.
