Claims
- 1. A floor pan for use in raised floor constructions of the type having raised cover tiles beneath which utilities are routed, comprising:
- a floor pan base adapted for abutting support directly on a floor surface, and having a generally open central portion, and at least two leg portions which extend outwardly of said central portion at a predetermined mutually included angle to define a portion of a first raceway within said floor pan, and a portion of a second raceway without said floor pan; each of said leg portions having a pair of upstanding sidewalls extending adjacent opposite sides thereof which define a generally U-shaped transverse vertical cross-sectional configuration;
- at least one pedestal mounted on said pan base adjacent the intersection of two of said leg portion sidewalls, and having an upper support surface thereof disposed above said two leg portion sidewalls, and shaped to support thereon cover tiles which enclose said floor pan.
- 2. A floor pan as set forth in claim 1, including:
- at least one vertically oriented fastener aperture extending through said pedestal for fastening the cover tiles thereto.
- 3. A floor pan as set forth in claim 2, including:
- at least one vertically oriented fastener aperture extending through one of the leg portions of said floor pan sidewalls for fastening a connector bridge thereto.
- 4. A floor pan as set forth in claim 3, wherein:
- each of said floor pan sidewalls includes an angled flange extending along an upper edge thereof.
- 5. A floor pan as set forth in claim 4, wherein:
- said fastener aperture extends through each said angled flange.
- 6. A floor pan as set forth in claim 5, wherein:
- said floor pan has an L-shaped plan configuration.
- 7. A floor pan as set forth in claim 5, wherein:
- said floor pan has an X-shaped plan configuration.
- 8. A floor pan as set forth in claim 5, wherein:
- said floor pan has a T-shaped plan configuration.
- 9. A method for routing utility lines across an existing building floor, comprising:
- providing a raised floor construction having a plurality of floor pans, bridges and cover tiles;
- positioning selected ones of the floor pans directly on the building floor; the floor pans each having a central portion, and at least one leg portion extending outwardly thereof;
- arranging the selected floor pans on the building floor in a predetermined pattern, so that the leg portions of adjacent floor pans are in an aligned, end-to-end condition, leaving the remaining portion of the building floor uncovered;
- positioning the bridges over at least one leg portion of each aligned pair of floor pan leg portions;
- routing a first set of utility lines within selected ones of the floor pans to define a first raceway;
- routing a second set of utility lines over a selected portion of the uncovered area of the building floor and selected ones of the bridges to define a second raceway, which is physically isolated from the first raceway to alleviate interference between the first and second sets of utility lines; and
- positioning the cover tiles on top of the selected floor pans, and arranging the same in edge-to-edge juxtaposition to enclose both of the first and second raceways.
- 10. A method as set forth in claim 9, wherein:
- said raised floor providing step comprises providing a thin-raised floor construction having a plurality of floor pans, bridges, and cover tiles.
- 11. A method as set forth in claim 9, wherein:
- said bridge positioning step comprises positioning the bridges over each aligned pair of floor pan leg portions, so that the bridges span between both of the leg portions of the adjacent floor pans.
- 12. A method as set forth in claim 11 including, after the bridge positioning step, the step of:
- fastening the bridges to the floor pans to rigidly interconnect the same in the predetermined pattern.
- 13. A method as set forth in claim 12, wherein:
- said bridge fastening step comprises inserting threaded fasteners into the bridges and associated floor pans to detachably interconnect the same.
- 14. A method as set forth in claim 13, including:
- inserting threaded fasteners into the cover tiles and associated floor pans to detachably interconnect the same.
- 15. A method for installing raised utility floors of the type, having a plurality of floor pans, bridges and cover tiles;
- positioning selected ones of the floor pans directly on the building floor; the floor pans each having a central portion, and at least one leg portion extending outwardly thereof;
- arranging the selected floor pans on the building floor in a predetermined pattern, so that the leg portions of adjacent floor pans are in an aligned, end-to-end condition, leaving the remaining portion of the building floor uncovered;
- positioning the bridges over at least one leg portion of each aligned pair of floor pan leg portions;
- routing a first set of utility lines within selected ones of the floor pans to define a first raceway;
- routing a second set of utility lines over a selected portion of the uncovered area of the building floor and selected ones of the bridges to define a second raceway, which is physically isolated from the first raceway to alleviate interference between the first and second set, of utility lines; and
- positioning the cover tiles on top of the selected floor pans, and arranging the same in edge-to-edge juxtaposition to enclose both of the first and second raceways.
- 16. A method as set forth in claim 15, wherein:
- said bridge positioning step comprises positioning the bridges over each aligned pair of floor pan leg portions, so that the bridges span between both of the leg portions of the adjacent floor pans.
- 17. A method as set forth in claim 16 including, after the bridge positioning step, the step of:
- fastening the bridges to the floor pans to rigidly interconnect the same in the predetermined pattern.
- 18. A method as set forth in claim 17, wherein:
- said bridge fastening step comprises inserting threaded fasteners into the bridges and associated floor pans to detachably interconnect the same.
- 19. A method as set forth in claim 18, including:
- inserting threading fasteners into the cover tiles and associated floor pans to detachably interconnect the same.
