Claims
- 1. A utility lighter comprising:
a housing having a main body portion and a rod-like portion extending from the main body portion, the rod-like portion having a nozzle at its end; a fuel supply container disposed within the main body portion; a conduit for conducting fuel from the fuel supply container to the nozzle; a valve mechanism for controlling release of fuel to the nozzle; a piezoelectric unit for generating a spark near the nozzle to ignite the fuel; a trigger having a first portion that extends from the housing and is accessible by a user, and a second portion operatively associated with the piezoelectric unit; a release member exposed to the outside of the housing so that it is actuatable by a user to release fuel to the nozzle; and a blocking member associated with the release member and movable between a first position where it interferes with movement of the trigger and a second position where it permits the trigger to move sufficiently to operate the piezoelectric unit; wherein the blocking member is normally located in the first position, and actuation of the release member to release fuel moves the blocking member to the second position, and when the user releases the release member, the blocking member automatically returns to the first position to interfere with movement of the trigger.
- 2. The utility lighter of claim 1, wherein the blocking member engages the trigger when in the first position.
- 3. The utility lighter of claim 1, wherein the blocking member is pivotable with respect to the trigger.
- 4. The utility lighter of claim 3, wherein the blocking member is spring biased toward the first position.
- 5. The utility lighter of claim 1, wherein the blocking member is separate from the release member.
- 6. The utility lighter of claim 1, wherein actuation of the release member operates the valve mechanism to release fuel to the nozzle.
- 7. The utility lighter of claim 6, wherein the release member engages a portion of the valve mechanism.
- 8. The utility lighter of claim 1, wherein the main body portion defines a first length and the rod-like portion defines a second length that is at least two thirds as long as the first length.
- 9. The utility lighter of claim 8, wherein the second length is substantially equal to the first length.
- 10. The utility lighter of claim 1, wherein when a user is holding the main body portion in their hand, the release member is operable by the user's thumb, and the trigger is operable by the user's index finger.
- 11. A utility lighter comprising:
a housing having a main body portion and a rod-like portion extending from the main body portion, the rod-like portion having a nozzle at its end; a fuel supply container disposed within the main body portion, the fuel supply container in fluid communication with the nozzle; a piezoelectric unit for generating a spark near the nozzle to ignite the fuel; a trigger operable by a user's index finger to cause the piezoelectric unit to generate a spark; and a release member operable by a user's thumb to cause the release of fuel from the wherein:
the release member is normally located in a first position where movement of the trigger is substantially prevented; movement of the release member to a second position causes the release of fuel from the nozzle and permits the trigger to move sufficiently to operate the piezoelectric unit; and the release member automatically returns to the first position such that movement of the trigger is substantially prevented.
- 12. The utility lighter of claim 11, further comprising a blocking member associated with the release member, wherein the blocking member engages the trigger when the release member is located in the first position.
- 13. The utility lighter of claim 12, wherein the blocking member is disengaged from the trigger when the release member is located in the second position.
- 14. The utility lighter of claim 12, wherein the blocking member pivots with respect to the trigger.
- 15. The utility lighter of claim 12, wherein the blocking member is spring biased to engage the trigger.
- 16. The utility lighter of claim 11, further comprising a valve mechanism associated with the fuel supply container, wherein movement of the release member to the second position causes the valve mechanism to release fuel from the fuel supply.
- 17. The utility lighter of claim 16, wherein movement of the release member to the second position lifts the valve mechanism to release fuel from the fuel supply.
- 18. The utility lighter of claim 11, wherein the release member automatically returns to the first position after a user's thumb is removed from the release member.
- 19. The utility lighter of claim 11, wherein the main body portion defines a first length and the rod-like portion defines a second length that is at least two thirds as long as the first length.
- 20. The utility lighter of claim 19, wherein the second length is substantially equal to the first length.
- 21. A utility lighter comprising:
a housing having a main body portion and a rod-like portion extending from the main body portion, the rod-like portion having a nozzle at its end; a fuel supply container disposed within the main body portion, the fuel supply container in fluid communication with the nozzle; a piezoelectric unit for generating a spark near the nozzle to ignite the fuel; a trigger movable with respect to the housing to cause the piezoelectric unit to generate a spark; and a release member slidable along the main body portion to cause the release of fuel from the nozzle; wherein:
the release member is normally located in a first position where movement of the trigger is substantially prevented; sliding of the release member to a second position causes the release of fuel from the nozzle and permits the trigger to move sufficiently to operate the piezoelectric unit; and the release member automatically returns to the first position such that movement of the trigger is substantially prevented.
- 22. The utility lighter of claim 21, further comprising a blocking member associated with the release member, wherein the blocking member engages the trigger when the release member is located in the first position.
- 23. The utility lighter of claim 22, wherein the blocking member pivots with respect to the trigger.
- 24. The utility lighter of claim 23, wherein the blocking member is spring biased to engage the trigger.
- 25. The utility lighter of claim 24, wherein the release member is spring biased to the first position.
