Claims
- 1. A tension indicator for use with a fastener, the fastener being formed from a stack of conical washers confined in the stack by a cage, the stack defining an uppermost washer having an upper surface and further defining an interior region intermediate a peripheral edge thereof and a longitudinal axis of the stack, the cage including longitudinally extending side portions and including a top securing member extending from the side portions to maintain the washers in the stack, the fastener configured for threadedly engaging a stud through a central, longitudinal opening therein, the tension indicator comprising:a body defining a central nut bore therein, the nut bore configured to snuggly receiving the fastener therein; a through body eccentric bore contiguous with and eccentric with respect to the nut bore and opening into the nut bore; at least one stop disposed within the central nut bore, the at least one stop adapted to contact the nut an outermost periphery of the uppermost washer defining a baseline plane relative to an outermost periphery of the uppermost washer when the fastener is positioned within the nut bore; and indicating means positioned within the eccentric bore for determining a height of the uppermost washer at a location intermediate the outer periphery of the uppermost washer and the longitudinal axis of the stack, the height being determined relative to the baseline plane at the outer periphery of the uppermost washer.
- 2. The tension indicator in accordance with claim 1 wherein the indicating means is a mechanical gauge.
- 3. The tension indicator in accordance with claim 2 wherein the mechanical gauge is a displacement indicator and wherein the displacement indicator includes a stem portion having a tip, and wherein the eccentric bore is positioned such that the stem tip contacts the uppermost washer immediately adjacent the central stud-receiving opening.
- 4. The tension indicator in accordance with claim 1 including a plurality of stops disposed within the central nut bore.
- 5. A tension indicator for use with a fastener, the fastener being formed from a stack of conical washers confined in the stack by a cage, the stack defining an uppermost washer having an upper surface and fix defining an interior region intermediate a peripheral edge thereof and a longitudinal axis of the stack, the cage including longitudinally extending side portions and including a top securing member extending from the side portions to maintain the washers in the stack, the fastener configured for threadedly engaging a stud through a central, longitudinal opening therein, the tension indicator comprising:a body defining a central nut bore therein, the nut bore configured to receive the fastener therein; at least one stop disposed within the central nut bore, the at least one stop adapted to contact the nut at an outermost periphery of the uppermost washer defining a baseline plane relative to the outermost periphery of the uppermost washer when the fastener is positioned within the nut bore; and indicating means cooperating with the body for determining a height of the upper most washer at the interior region intermediate the peripheral edge and the stud central bore opening.
- 6. The tension indicator in accordance with claim 5 wherein the indicating means is a mechanical gauge.
- 7. The tension indicator in accordance with claim 5 wherein the baseline plane is defined by a plurality of stops in the body.
- 8. The tension indicator in accordance with claim 5 wherein the height of the uppermost washer is determined at a location immediately adjacent the stud central bore opening.
