Claims
- 1. A vacuum fill system for deaerating and compacting flowable material for storage and transportation in a flexible bulk container, the flexible bulk container having a bottom and sidewall, said vacuum fill system comprising:
- a base for supporting the flexible bulk container wherein the base is positioned below the flexible bulk container;
- a hollow chamber having a sidewall, a top wall, and an open bottom, said hollow chamber being inserted in the flexible bulk container such that the open bottom of the hollow chamber contacts the bottom of the flexible bulk container;
- means for creating a vacuum connected to the hollow chamber, said means for creating a vacuum drawing a vacuum from the inside of the flexible bulk container after the hollow chamber is inserted inside the flexible bulk container thereby deaerating the flowable material inside the flexible bulk container; and
- means for returning the chamber contents to atmospheric pressure substantially instantaneously to compact the deaerated material.
- 2. The vacuum fill system of claim 1, further comprising means for forming an airtight seal at the open bottom of the chamber for creating a vacuum in the chamber.
- 3. The vacuum fill system of claim 1, further comprising a sealable opening in the top wall of the chamber for movement of flowable material into the chamber and into the container.
- 4. The vacuum fill system of claim 1, further comprising means for supporting the container in an upright position for insertion of the chamber into the container.
- 5. The vacuum fill system of claim 1, further comprising means for retaining the shape of the open bottom of the chamber when a vacuum is created in the chamber.
- 6. The vacuum fill system of claim 1, further comprising a flexible bulk container having;
- a bottom wall;
- a perimeter sidewall having a first and second portions;
- a bottom panel pleated at predetermined locations to form corners from which the panel extends upwardly to form the second portion of the perimeter sidewall with the remainder of the bottom panel forming the bottom wall; and
- a seam joining the second portion of the perimeter sidewall to the first portion of the perimeter sidewall at a predetermined distance upwardly from the bottom wall.
- 7. The vacuum fill system of claim 1, wherein the means for creating a vacuum in the chamber further comprises at least one vacuum line connecting the chamber to a vacuum source.
- 8. The vacuum fill system of claim 7, further comprising at least one valve for controlling the flow from the chamber to the vacuum source.
- 9. The vacuum fill system of claim 1, wherein the means for returning the contents of the chamber to atmospheric pressure substantially instantaneously further comprises at least one line connected to the chamber and vented to the atmosphere.
- 10. The vacuum fill system of claim 9, further comprising at least one valve in the line vented to the atmosphere.
- 11. The vacuum fill system of claim 1, wherein the hollow chamber has an interior cross section dimensioned to conform substantially with an interior cross section of the container to be filled.
- 12. The vacuum fill system of claim 1, wherein the hollow chamber has an interior cross section dimensioned to conform substantially with an interior cross section of the container to be filled, said chamber further having a volume substantially three times the interior volume of the container to be filled.
- 13. A vacuum fill system for deaerating and compacting flowable material for storage and transportation in flexible bulk containers comprising:
- a base for supporting the flexible container:
- a hollow chamber having a sidewall, a top wall, and an open bottom;
- means for inserting the hollow chamber into the container;
- means for creating a vacuum in the chamber to deaerate the flowable material in the container;
- means for returning the chamber contents to atmospheric pressure substantially instantaneously to compact the deaerated material; and
- a metal disk placed under the container within the sidewall of the chamber, the metal disk having a diameter slightly smaller than the interior diameter of the chamber, said disk retaining the shape of the open bottom of the chamber when a vacuum is created in the chamber.
- 14. A vacuum fill system for deaerating and compacting flowable material for storage and transportation in a flexible bulk container, the flexible bulk container having a bottom and sidewall, said vacuum fill system comprising:
- an air impermeable base for supporting the container wherein the base is positioned below the container;
- a hollow chamber having a sidewall, a top wall, and an open bottom;
- means for forming an airtight seal at the open bottom of the chamber;
- a sealable opening in the top wall of the chamber for movement of flowable material into the chamber;
- means for creating a vacuum connected to the hollow chamber, said means for creating a vacuum drawing a vacuum from the inside of the flexible bulk container after the hollow chamber is inserted inside the flexible bulk container;
- means for returning the chamber contents to atmospheric pressure substantially instantaneously; and
- means for preventing collapse of the chamber in the area of the open bottom when the vacuum is created in the chamber.
- 15. The vacuum fill system of claim 14, further comprising a flexible bulk container having:
- a bottom wall;
- a perimeter sidewall having a first and second portions;
- a bottom panel pleated at predetermined locations to form corners from which the panel extends upwardly to form the second portion of the perimeter sidewall with the remainder of the bottom panel forming the bottom wall; and
- a seam joining the second portion of the perimeter sidewall to the first portion of the perimeter sidewall at predetermined distance upwardly from the bottom wall.
- 16. The vacuum fill system of claim 14, wherein the sealable opening in the top wall of the chamber further comprises a knife valve.
- 17. The vacuum fill system of claim 14, wherein the means for creating an airtight seal at the open bottom of the chamber further comprises a rubber pad placed on the base, under the container and under the chamber.
- 18. The vacuum fill system of claim 14, wherein the means for creating a vacuum in the chamber further comprises at least one vacuum line connecting the chamber to a vacuum source.
- 19. The vacuum fill system of claim 18, further comprising at least one valve for controlling the flow from the chamber to the vacuum source.
- 20. The vacuum fill system of claim 14, wherein the means for returning the contents of the chamber to atmospheric pressure substantially instantaneously further comprises at least one line connected to the chamber and vented to the atmosphere.
- 21. The vacuum fill system of claim 20, further comprising at least one valve in the line vented to the atmosphere.
- 22. The vacuum fill system of claim 14, wherein the hollow chamber has an interior cross section dimensioned to conform substantially with an interior cross section of the container to be filled.
- 23. The vacuum fill system of claim 14, wherein the hollow chamber has an interior cross section dimensioned to conform substantially with an interior cross section of the container to be filled, said chamber further having a volume substantially three times the interior volume of the container to be filled.
- 24. The vacuum fill system of claim 14, further comprising means for supporting the container in an upright position for insertion of the chamber into the container.
- 25. The vacuum fill system of claim 24, wherein the means for supporting the container in an upright position further comprises a frame having a perimeter base and at least one upwardly extending support arm.
- 26. A vacuum fill system for deaerating and compacting flowable material for storage and transportation in flexible bulk containers comprising:
- a container having sidewalls and a bottom wall for receiving flowable material therein;
- an air impermeable base for supporting the container wherein the base is positioned below the container;
- a hollow chamber having, a sidewall, a top wall, and an open bottom;
- means for inserting the hollow chamber into the container;
- means for forming an airtight seal at the open bottom of the chamber;
- a sealable opening in the top wall of the chamber for movement of flowable material into the chamber;
- means for creating a vacuum in the chamber;
- means for turning the chamber contents to atmospheric pressure substantially instantaneously; and
- a metal disk placed under the container within the sidewall of the chamber, the metal disk having a diameter slightly smaller than the interior diameter of the chamber, the metal disk preventing collapse of the chamber in the area of the open bottom.
- 27. A vacuum fill system for deaerating and compacting flowable material for storage and transportation in flexible bulk containers comprising:
- a container having sidewalls and a bottom wall for receiving flowable materials therein;
- an air impermeable base for supporting the container;
- a hollow chamber having a sidewall, a top wall, and an open bottom for insertion into the container;
- a rubber pad placed under the container and chamber for forming an airtight seal at the open bottom of the chamber;
- a slide gate valve in the top wall of the chamber for controlling the movement of flowable material into the chamber and the container;
- at least one vacuum line connecting the chamber to a vacuum source for creating a vacuum in the chamber to deaerate the flowable material in the container;
- at least one line connected to the chamber and vented to the atmosphere through at least one valve for returning the chamber contents to atmospheric pressure substantially instantaneously to compact the deaerated material;
- a frame for supporting the sidewall of the container in an upright position to allow insertion of the chamber into the container; and
- a metal disk for preventing collapse of the chamber in the area of the open bottom when the vacuum is created in the chamber.
- 28. The vacuum fill system of claim 27, wherein the container further comprises a bottom wall having a plurality of corners such that the bottom wall extends vertically adjacent the corners with a seam connecting the bottom wall to the sidewall extending around the perimeter of the sidewall a predetermined distance upwardly from the underlying surface.
- 29. The vacuum fill system of claim 27, further comprising a chamber having an interior area substantially the same as the interior area of the container to be filled.
- 30. The vacuum fill system of claim 27, further comprising a chamber having an interior area substantially three times the interior area of the container to be filled and having an exterior circumference slightly smaller than the interior circumference of the container to be filled.
- 31. The vacuum fill system of claim 27, wherein the frame further comprises a perimeter base open in the center for receiving the rubber pad therein and at least one upwardly extending support arm for supporting the container in an upright position when a portion of the container sidewall is folded thereover.
