Claims
- 1. A poultry eviscerating apparatus for removing viscera from the body cavity of poultry through a precut access opening at the poultry vent, including:
- a vacuum eviscerating tool having a forward portion insertable into the body of the poultry through the access opening, the interior of said tool being divided into at least two separate longitudinally extending passages;
- carriage means movable with said poultry, said tool being reciprocally and selectively movable on said carriage means for movement into and out of said cavity;
- vacuum producing means operatively connected to each of said passages to selectively withdraw viscera from said body cavity through said passages when said tool is inserted into said cavity; and
- means for selectively communicating said tool with said vacuum producing means while said tool is within said cavity wherein said tool is provided with body cavity spacing means engageable with the walls of said body cavity to maintain an air space between said tool and said body cavity to prevent collapse of said body cavity while a vacuum is imposed on said body cavity through said tool.
- 2. The poultry eviscerating apparatus of claim 1 further including conveying means for moving the poultry successively along a prescribed path and wherein said carriage means includes first drive means driven by said conveying means and operatively connected to said eviscerating tool for selectively reciprocating said eviscerating tool along a first path generally parallel to said prescribed path and second drive means operatively connected to said eviscerating tool for selectively extending said eviscerating tool reciprocally along a second path generally perpendicular to said prescribed path.
- 3. The poultry eviscerating apparatus of claim 2 wherein said first drive means is constructed and arranged to cause said conveying means to selectively move said eviscerating tool along said first path synchronously and in alignment with the poultry moving along said prescribed path and further including control means for causing said second drive means to extend said eviscerating tool along said second path through the access opening into the body cavity of the poultry while said eviscerating tool is moving along said first path synchronously and in alignment with the poultry.
- 4. Poultry eviscerating apparatus of claim 3 wherein said carriage means further includes a support frame, a carriage table movably mounted on said support frame for reciprocal movement with respect thereto along said first path generally parallel to said prescribed path, a tool support member movably mounted on said carriage table for reciprocal movement along said second path, said tool support member mounting said eviscerating tool on the end thereof; wherein said first drive means includes a cam member, idler drive means connecting said cam member to said conveying means for causing said cam member to be moved by said conveying means in response to movement of the poultry along said prescribed path, and cam follower means operatively associated with said cam member and said carriage table for causing said cam member to synchronously drive said carriage table along said first path; and wherein said second drive means is carried by said carriage table and operatively connected to said tool support member for causing said tool support member to be reciprocated along said second prescribed path.
- 5. The poultry eviscerating apparatus of claim 4 wherein said cam member is rotatably mounted on said support frame about a rotational axis generally parallel to said prescribed path and defines an annular camming surface thereon concentrically about said rotational axis, said idler drive means causing said conveying means to rotate said cam member about said rotational axis in response to movement of the poultry along said prescribed path and said cam follower means operatively engaging and driven by said camming surface to reciprocate said carriage table along said first path.
- 6. The poultry eviscerating apparatus of claim 5 wherein said conveying means moves the poultry in a first direction along said prescribed path; and wherein said camming surface includes a first portion for moving said carriage table from a first position to a second position along said first path in the same direction and at the same speed of movement as the poultry along said prescribed path, and a second portion for moving said carriage table from said second position to said first position along said first path opposite to the direction of movement of the poultry along said prescribed path.
- 7. The poultry eviscerating apparatus of claim 6 wherein said second drive means includes fluid cylinder means connecting said carriage table and said tool support member and wherein said control means causes said fluid cylinder means to extend said eviscerating tool into the body cavity of the poultry through the access opening while said carriage table moves from said first position to said second position in the same direction and at the same speed of movement as the poultry along said prescribed path.
- 8. The poultry eviscerating apparatus of claim 1 wherein said communicating means includes said vacuum producing means having two ports through which said vacuum is imposed to said tool and said tool having a port communicating with each of said passages, said vacuum means ports and said tool ports capable of being in selective registration with each other to allow said vacuum to be imposed to said tool.
- 9. The poultry eviscerating apparatus of claim 1 wherein said spacing means includes a plurality of rod members connected to and spaced from forward portion of said tool.
- 10. The improvement in a poultry eviscerating apparatus for removing viscera from the body cavity of poultry through a pre-cut access opening at the poultry vent of the type including a vacuum eviscerating tool which is reciprocally and selectively movable on a carriage means movable with said poultry and which is insertable into said body cavity through said access opening, and means for producing a vacuum on said tool to withdraw said viscera through said tool when said tool is inserted into said cavity, the improvement comprising body cavity spacing means on said tool, said spacing means being shaped to engage the walls of said cavity to hold said cavity open when said tool is within said cavity.
- 11. Poultry eviscerating apparatus for removing viscera from the body cavity of poultry through a pre-cut access opening at their vent including:
- an eviscerating tool insertable into the body cavity of the poultry through the access opening and having a first open mouth and a second open mouth at the projecting end thereof;
- carriage means for selectively moving said tool into the body cavity of the poultry and locating said first and said second open mouths within the body cavity; and
- vacuum producing means selectively and independently imposing a vacuum on said first and second open mouths to selectively withdraw viscera from said body cavity of the poultry,
- said apparatus further including conveying means for moving the poultry successively along a prescribed path and wherein said carriage means includes first drive means driven by said conveying means and operatively connected to said eviscerating tool for selectively reciprocating said eviscerating tool along a first path generally parallel to said prescribed path and second drive means operatively connected to said eviscerating tool for selectively extending said eviscerating tool reciprocally along a second path generally perpendicular to said prescribed path,
- said first drive means being constructed and arranged to cause said conveying means to selectively move said eviscerating tool along said first path synchronously and in alignment with the poultry moving along said prescribed path and further including control means for causing said second drive means to extend said eviscerating tool along said second path through the access opening into the body cavity of the poultry while said eviscerating tool is moving along said first path synchronously and in alignment with the poultry, said carriage means further including a support frame, a carriage table movably mounted on said support frame for reciprocal movement with respect thereto along said first path generally parallel to said prescribed path, a tool support member movably mounted on said carriage table for reciprocal movement along said second path, said tool support member mounting said eviscerating tool on the end thereof; wherein said first drive means includes a cam member, idler drive means connecting said cam member to said conveying means for causing said cam member to be moved by said conveying means in response to movement of the poultry along said prescribed path, and cam follower means operatively associated with said cam member and said carriage table for causing said cam member to synchoronously drive said carriage table along said first path; and wherein said second drive means is carried by said carriage table and operatively connected to said tool support member for causing said tool support member to be reciprocated along said second prescribed path; said cam member being rotatably mounted on said support frame about a rotational axis generally parallel to said prescribed path and defines an annular camming surface thereon concentrically about said rotational axis, said idler drive means causing said conveying means to rotate said cam member about said rotational axis in response to movement of the poultry along said prescribed path and said cam follower means operatively engaging and driven by said camming surface to reciprocate said carriage table along said first path, wherein said conveying means moves the poultry in a first direction along said prescribed path; and wherein said camming surface includes a first portion for moving said carriage table from a first position to a second position along said first path in the same direction and at the same speed of movement as the poultry along said prescribed path, and a second portion for moving said carriage table from said second position to said first position along said first path opposite to the direction of movement of the poultry along said prescribed path, said second drive means including fluid cylinder means connecting said carriage table and said tool support member and wherein said control means causes said fluid cylinder means to extend said eviscerating tool into the body cavity of the poultry through the access opening while said carriage table moves from said first position to said second position in the same direction and at the same speed of movement as the poultry along said prescribed path, said fluid cylinder means being constructed and arranged to locate said first open mouth over one of the lung cavities in the body cavity and to locate said second open mouth over the other of the lung cavities in the body cavity, further including connection means for selectively connecting said open mouths in said eviscerating tool to said vacuum producing means, said connection means defining a first port communicating with said vacuum producing means, a second port communicating with said vacuum producing means, a third port communicating with said first open mouth in said eviscerating tool, and a fourth port communicating with said second open mouth in said eviscerating tool; and said connection means including actuation means for selectively moving said third port into registration with said first port to connect said first open mouth in said eviscerating tool to said vacuum producing means while simultaneously moving said fourth port into registration with said second port to connect said second open mouth in said eviscerating tool to said vacuum producing means when said tool support member reaches a predetermined position along said second path and said first and second open mouths of said eviscerating tool overlie the lung cavities, further including body cavity spacing means operatively associated with said eviscerating tool and engagable with the inside of the body cavity to maintain an air space between said eviscerating tool and the poultry about the body cavity to prevent collapse of the body cavity while a vacuum is imposed through said eviscerating tool, said body cavity spacing means including a plurality of rod members carried by said tool adjacent the projecting end thereof, each of said rod members including a portion spaced from said tool a prescribed distance and engagable with the poultry about the inside of the body cavity.
