Claims
- 1. In a vacuum-servo-actuated variable inductance transducer, the combination comprising:
- a one-piece molded plastic element integrally forming both a bobbin on which an inductive coil is wound and a portion of the chamber of said vacuum servo, said chamber portion terminating in a free peripheral edge portion;
- a metal shell separate from said element but cooperating therewith in forming the remainder of said vacuum servo chamber, said shell having a peripheral edge portion;
- a movable diaphragm having a peripheral edge portion and disposed within said vacuum servo chamber to divide same into a vacuum chamber portion adapted to be communicated to a source of vacuum and another chamber portion, said peripheral edge portion of said shell engaging said peripheral edge portion of said diaphragm and wrapping around said peripheral edge portion of said element such that said diaphragm is peripherally held between said peripheral edge portions of said element and shell, said vacuum chamber portion being defined by said diaphragm and said shell and said another chamber portion being defined by said diaphragm and said element;
- a bore within said bobbin containing a core arranged for displacement therein to vary the inductance of said coil;
- connection means connecting said core and diaphragm such that movement of said diaphragm causes displacement of said core within said bore;
- a spring seat formed in said metal shell; and
- a helical coil spring in said vacuum chamber portion having one end thereof disposed within said seat and the other end thereof biased into engagement with said diaphragm to bias same toward said another chamber portion.
- 2. A transducer as claimed in claim 1 wherein said connection means includes a flexible connecting element.
- 3. A transducer as claimed in claim 1 including a protective enclosure on said bobbin covering said coil.
- 4. A transducer as claimed in claim 1 wherein said element includes an intergral stem disposed within said chamber for limiting the displacement of said diaphragm.
- 5. A transducer as claimed in claim 1 including aperture means in the portion of said chamber formed by said molded plastic element and dimensioned to permit an assembly tool to effect attachment of said connection means with said diaphragm for at least approximately calibrating the transducer during assembly thereof.
- 6. A transducer as claimed in claim 1 including a nipple in said shell via which vacuum is communicated to said vacuum chamber portion.
- 7. A transducer as claimed in claim 1 including a support plate disposed against said diaphragm on the vacuum chamber side thereof, said spring bearing against said plate to bias said diaphragm.
- 8. A transducer as claimed in claim 1, including terminal means connected with said coil and disposed on said element at one axial end of said bobbin, said servo being disposed at the opposite axial end of said bobbin.
