Claims
- 1. Apparatus for guiding sheet material along a curved transfer path in a printing press comprising, in combination:
- a manifold housing defining a vacuum chamber having an airflow inlet opening formed therein and having an airflow outlet port for connection to means for inducing a negative pressure within said chamber; and,
- an array of curved support bars mounted on said manifold housing, said support bars extending across the airflow inlet opening substantially in sheet transfer alignment with said curved transfer path and laterally space apart in side-to-side relation thereby defining a plurality of laterally spaced elongated inlet apertures, said support bars each providing a smooth surface for supporting and guiding sheet material along the transfer path while constraining the flow of inlet air through the elongated inlet apertures and thereby limiting the flow of air into said airflow inlet.
- 2. A vacuum transfer apparatus as set forth in claim 1, wherein said support bars are substantially equally spaced apart laterally across said transfer path, said airflow apertures being disposed intermediate adjacent support bars.
- 3. Apparatus for guiding sheet material along a curved transfer path in a printing press comprising, in combination:
- a manifold housing defining a vacuum chamber having an airflow inlet opening formed therein and having an airflow outlet port for connection to means for inducing a subatmospheric pressure within said chamber;
- said manifold housing including a partition panel extending laterally across the airflow inlet opening, thereby defining a first manifold chamber and a second manifold chamber, including means coupled to said vacuum chamber for producing a relatively greater airflow per unit area through the first manifold chamber relative to the airflow per unit area through the second manifold chamber; and
- an array of curved support bars mounted on said manifold housing, said support bars extending across the airflow inlet opening and laterally spaced apart in side-to-side relation substantially in alignment with said sheet transfer path thereby defining a plurality of laterally spaced elongated inlet apertures, said support bars each providing a smooth surface for supporting and guiding sheet material along the transfer path while constraining the flow of inlet air through the elongated inlet apertures.
- 4. Apparatus for guiding sheet material along a curved transfer path in a printing press comprising, in combination:
- a manifold housing defining a vacuum chamber having an airflow inlet opening formed therein and having an airflow outlet port for connection to means for inducing a subatmospheric pressure within said chamber;
- said manifold housing including a partition extending longitudinally across the airflow inlet opening, thereby defining a first manifold chamber and a second manifold chamber, said manifold housing including a first suction port coupled in airflow communication with the first manifold chamber, and having a second suction port coupled in airflow communication with the second manifold chamber; and,
- an array of curved support bars mounted on said manifold housing, said support bars extending across the airflow inlet opening and laterally spaced apart in side-to-side relation substantially in alignment with said sheet transfer path thereby defining a plurality of laterally spaced elongated inlet apertures, said support bars each providing a smooth surface for supporting and guiding sheet material along the transfer path while constraining the flow of inlet air through the elongated inlet apertures.
- 5. Apparatus for guiding sheet material along a curved transfer path in a printing press comprising, in combination:
- a manifold housing defining a vacuum chamber having an airflow inlet opening formed therein and having an airflow outlet port for connection to means for inducing a subatmospheric pressure within said chamber;
- an array of curved support bars mounted on said manifold housing, said support bars extending across the airflow inlet opening and laterally spaced apart in side-to-side relation substantially in alignment with said sheet transfer path thereby defining laterally spaced elongated inlet apertures, said support bars each providing a smooth surface for supporting and guiding sheet material along the transfer path while constraining the flow of inlet air through the elongated inlet apertures and thereby limiting the flow rate of air into said airflow inlet; and,
- a curved back plate mounted on said frame and interposed between said support bars and said vacuum chamber, said back plate intersected by a plurality of apertures providing airflow communication between the vacuum chamber and the airflow apertures between adjacent support bars.
- 6. Apparatus for guiding sheet material along a curved transfer path in a printing press comprising, in combination:
- a manifold housing defining a vacuum chamber having an airflow inlet opening formed therein and having an airflow outlet port for connection to means for inducing a subatmospheric pressure within said chamber;
- an array of curved support bars mounted on said manifold housing, said support bars extending across the airflow inlet opening and laterally spaced apart in side-to-side relation substantially in alignment with said sheet transfer path thereby defining a plurality of laterally spaced elongated inlet apertures, said support bars each providing a smooth surface for supporting and guiding sheet material along the transfer path while constraining the flow of inlet air through the elongated inlet apertures;
- a curved back plate mounted on said frame, said frame having first and second back plate sections interposed between said support bars and said vacuum chamber, each back plate section being intersected by a plurality of apertures providing airflow communication between the vacuum chamber and the spaces between adjacent support bars; and,
- wherein the airflow apertures which intersect the first back plate section have a total effective airflow passage area which is relatively greater than the total effective airflow passage area provided by the apertures which intersect the second back plate section.
- 7. Apparatus for guiding sheet material along a curved transfer path in a printing press comprising, in combination:
- a manifold housing defining a vacuum chamber having an airflow inlet opening formed therein, an airflow outlet port for connection to means for inducing a subatmospheric pressure within said chamber and said vacuum chamber having a first chamber region and a second chamber region;
- an array of curved support bars mounted on said manifold housing, said support bars extending across the airflow inlet opening and laterally spaced apart in side-to-side relation substantially in alignment with said sheet transfer path thereby defining a plurality of laterally spaced elongated inlet apertures, said support bars each providing a smooth surface for supporting and guiding sheet material along the transfer path while constraining the flow of inlet air through the elongated inlet apertures;
- a curved back plate mounted on said frame and interposed between said support bars and said vacuum chamber, said back plate being intersected by a plurality of apertures providing airflow communication between the vacuum chamber and the spaces between adjacent support bars; and,
- wherein said apertures are elongated slots, with the elongated slots overlying the first chamber region having relatively greater airflow area than the airflow slots overlying the second chamber region.
