Claims
- 1. Apparatus for guiding sheet material along a curved transfer path in a printing press comprising, in combination:
- a manifold housing having a vacuum chamber, an airflow inlet opening formed therein, and having an airflow outlet port for connection to means for inducing a vacuum within said chamber;
- a curved sheet transfer plate mounted on said manifold housing and overlying the airflow inlet opening, said sheet transfer plate having a plurality of sheet support sections laterally spaced apart and disposed substantially in concentric relation with said curved transfer path, said sheet support sections being separated by radially offset transfer plate sections, integrally formed with said transfer plate, thereby defining a plurality of annular slots, said annular slots being laterally spaced to permit rotary passage of gripping means; and,
- said transfer plate sections lying in the annular slots between said sheet support sections being intersected by a plurality of airflow apertures.
- 2. A vacuum transfer apparatus as set forth in claim 1, wherein said vacuum chamber having first and second chamber the airflow apertures in the radially offset transfer plate sections overlying said first chamber region of the vacuum chamber have a total effective airflow passage area which is relatively grater than the total effective airflow passage area provided by the airflow apertures in the transfer plate sections overlying said second chamber region.
- 3. A vacuum transfer apparatus as set forth in claim 1, wherein said apertures are elongated slots, with the elongated slots overlying said first chamber region of the vacuum chamber having relatively greater total airflow inlet area than the total inlet area of the airflow slots overlying said second chamber region of said vacuum chamber.
- 4. A vacuum transfer apparatus as set forth in claim 1, including radially projecting nodes formed on said sheet support sections, said nodes having sheet engagable surfaces disposed substantially in concentric alignment with said curved transfer path.
