Claims
- 1. A valve, comprising:
- a housing defining an interior chamber having an inlet and an outlet, said inlet being generally perpendicular to said outlet, said housing having an opening which is coplanar with said inlet and said outlet and perpendicular to said inlet;
- a valve member provided within said interior chamber, the valve member having first, second and third ports arranged about a surface of the valve member, said valve member having a turning axis and said first, second and third ports including central axes which are generally perpendicular to one another, said first port having a size which is smaller than either of the second and third ports;
- first seal means for selectively sealingly receiving a surface of the valve member adjacent the outlet;
- second seal means for selectively sealingly receiving a surface of the valve member adjacent the inlet;
- means for selectively moving said valve member within said interior chamber whereby communication between said inlet and outlet may be sequentially closed, opened to a first preselected flow rate and then opened to a second preselected flow rate, said second preselected flow rate being greater than the first preselected flow rate; and
- means for relieving pressure in said housing above a predetermined amount, said means for relieving pressure having an inlet in communication with said opening of said housing, said means for relieving pressure closing said opening of said housing while the pressure in said housing is below said predetermined amount,
- said valve member being selectively movable within said interior chamber whereby communication between said inlet and said outlet and between said inlet and said opening may be simultaneously closed.
- 2. The valve of claim 1, wherein the valve member is generally spherical.
- 3. The valve of claim 2 further comprising means for permitting a pressure within said housing to be sensed.
- 4. The arrangement of claim 1, wherein said means for relieving pressure includes a pressure relief valve which is threadably received within said opening of said housing whereby the valve member may be readily assembled in said valve housing.
- 5. The valve of claim 2, wherein said communication between said inlet and said outlet is closed by selectively moving said valve member to position said first, second, and third ports away from said outlet, said communication between said inlet and outlet being opened to said first preselected flow rate by selectively moving said valve member to position said first port adjacent said outlet, said communication between said inlet and outlet being opened to said second preselected flow rate by selectively moving said valve member to position said second port adjacent the outlet, and said communication between said inlet and said outlet and between said inlet and said opening being simultaneously closed by selectively moving said valve member to position said first, second, and third ports away from said inlet.
- 6. The valve of claim 1, wherein said means for relieving pressure has an outlet, said inlet and outlet of said means for relieving pressure being in communication with one another when said pressure in said housing is above said predetermined amount; said arrangement further comprising means for providing communication between said outlet of said means for relieving pressure and said outlet of said housing.
- 7. An arrangement for testing and draining a fire suppression water sprinkler system, comprising:
- conduit means for supplying water to a plurality of sprinklers;
- means for sensing a flow of water in said conduit means;
- valve means provided downstream of said means for sensing and in communication with said conduit means, said valve means comprising
- a housing defining an interior chamber having an inlet and an outlet, said inlet and said outlet being generally perpendicular to one another, said housing having an opening which is coplanar with said inlet and said outlet and perpendicular to said inlet;
- a valve member provided within said interior chamber, the valve member having first, second and third ports arranged about a surface of said valve member, said valve member having a turning axis and said first and second ports having central axes which are generally perpendicular to one another, and said second and third ports having central axes which are generally perpendicular to one another, said first port having a size which is smaller than either of the second and third ports,
- first seal means for sealingly receiving a surface of said valve member adjacent the outlet;
- second seal means for selectively sealingly receiving a surface of the valve member adjacent the inlet;
- means for selectively moving said valve member within said interior chamber whereby communication between said inlet and outlet may be sequentially closed, open to a first preselected flow rate and then opened to a second preselected flow rate, said second preselected flow rate being greater than said first preselected flow rate; and
- means for relieving pressure in said housing above a predetermined amount, said means for relieving pressure having an inlet in communication with said opening of said housing, said means for relieving pressure closing said opening of said housing while the pressure in said housing is below said predetermined amount,
- said valve member being selectively movable within said interior chamber whereby communication between said inlet and said outlet and between said inlet and said opening may be simultaneously closed.
- 8. The arrangement of claim 7, wherein the valve member is generally spherical.
- 9. The arrangement of claim 8, further comprising means for permitting a pressure within said housing to be sensed.
- 10. The arrangement of claim 9, wherein said communication between said inlet and said outlet is closed by selectively moving said valve member to position said first, second, and third ports away from said outlet, said communication between said inlet and outlet being opened to said first preselected flow rate by selectively moving said valve member to position said first port adjacent said outlet, said communication between said inlet and outlet being opened to said second preselected flow rate by selectively moving said valve member to position said second port adjacent the outlet, and said communication between said inlet and said outlet and between said inlet and said opening being simultaneously closed by selectively moving said valve member to position said first, second, and third ports away from said inlet.
- 11. The arrangement of claim 7, wherein said means for relieving pressure has an outlet, said inlet and outlet of said means for relieving pressure being in communication with one another when said pressure in said housing is above said predetermined amount; said arrangement further comprising means for providing communication between said outlet of said means for relieving pressure and said outlet of said housing.
- 12. An arrangement for testing and draining a fire suppression water sprinkler system, comprising:
- conduit means for supplying water to a plurality of sprinklers;
- means for sensing a flow of water in said conduit means;
- valve means provided downstream of said means for sensing and in communication with said conduit means, said valve means comprising
- a housing defining an interior chamber having an inlet, an opening, and an outlet, said inlet and outlet being generally perpendicular to one another,
- a valve member provided within said interior chamber, the valve member having first, second, and third ports arranged about a surface of the valve member, said valve member having a turning axis and said first and second ports having central axes which are generally perpendicular to one another, and said second and third ports having central axes which are generally perpendicular to one another, said first port having a size which is smaller than either of the second and third ports;
- seal means for selectively sealingly receiving a surface of the valve member adjacent the outlet;
- means for selectively moving said valve member within said interior chamber whereby communication between said inlet and outlet may be selectively opened to a first preselected flow rate, closed, and opened to a second preselected flow rate, said second preselected flow rate being greater than the first preselected flow rate; and
- means for relieving pressure in said housing above a predetermined amount, said means for relieving pressure having an inlet in communication with said opening of said housing, said means for relieving pressure closing said opening of said housing while the pressure in said housing is below said predetermined amount.
- 13. The arrangement of claim 12, wherein the valve member is generally spherical.
- 14. A valve, comprising:
- a housing defining an interior chamber having an inlet, an opening, and an outlet, said inlet being generally perpendicular to said outlet;
- a valve member provided within said interior chamber, the valve member having first, second, and third ports arranged about a surface of the valve member, said valve member having a turning axis and said first and second ports having central axes which are generally perpendicular to one another, and said second and third ports having central axes which are generally perpendicular to one another, said first port having a size which is smaller than either of the second and third ports;
- seal means for selectively sealingly receiving a surface of the valve member adjacent the outlet;
- means for selectively moving said valve member within said interior chamber whereby communication between said inlet and outlet may be selectively opened to a first preselected flow rate, closed, and opened to a second preselected flow rate, said second preselected flow rate being greater than the first preselected flow rate; and
- means for relieving pressure in said housing above a predetermined amount, said means for relieving pressure having an inlet in communication with said opening of said housing, said means for relieving pressure closing said opening of said housing while the pressure in said housing is below said predetermined amount.
- 15. The valve of claim 14, wherein the valve member is generally spherical.
- 16. An arrangement for testing and draining a fire suppression water sprinkler system, comprising:
- conduit means for supplying water to a plurality of sprinklers;
- means for sensing a flow of water in said conduit means;
- valve means provided downstream of said means for sensing and in communication with said conduit means, said valve means comprising
- a housing defining an interior chamber having an inlet and an outlet, said inlet and outlet being generally perpendicular to one another, said housing having an opening which is coplanar with said inlet and said outlet and perpendicular to said inlet;
- a valve member provided within said interior chamber, the valve member having first, second and third ports arranged about a surface of the valve member, said valve member having a turning axis and said first, second and third ports including central axes which are generally perpendicular to one another, said first port having a size which is smaller than either of the second and third ports;
- seat means for selectively sealingly receiving a surface of the valve member adjacent the outlet;
- means for selectively moving said valve member within said interior chamber whereby communication between said inlet and outlet may be sequentially closed, opened to a first preselected flow rate and then opened to a second preselected flow rate, said second preselected flow rate being greater than the first preselected flow rate; and
- means for relieving pressure in said housing above a predetermined amount, said means for relieving pressure having an inlet in communication with said opening of said housing, said means for relieving pressure closing said opening of said housing while the pressure in said housing is below said predetermined amount.
- 17. The arrangement of claim 16, wherein the valve member is generally spherical.
- 18. The arrangement of claim 17, wherein said second port is always in communication with said inlet and wherein said means for selectively moving said valve member is adapted to sequentially and selectively rotate said valve member to position said third port adjacent said outlet to permit communication between said inlet and said outlet at said second preselected flow rate, then to position said first port adjacent the outlet to permit communication between the inlet and outlet at said first preselected flow rate and then to selectively position said first and third ports away from said outlet to interrupt communication between said inlet and said outlet.
- 19. The arrangement of claim 18, further comprising means for permitting a pressure within said housing to be sensed.
- 20. The arrangement of claim 18, wherein said means for relieving pressure includes a pressure relief valve which is threadably received within said opening of said housing whereby the valve member may be readily assembled in said valve housing.
- 21. The arrangement of claim 16, wherein said communication between said inlet and said outlet is closed by selectively moving said valve member to position said first and third ports away from said outlet, said communication between said inlet and outlet being opened to said first preselected flow rate by selectively moving said valve member to position said first port adjacent said outlet, said communication between said inlet and outlet being opened to said second preselected flow rate by selectively moving said valve member to position said third port adjacent the outlet.
- 22. The arrangement of claim 16, wherein the seat means is comprised of at least one annular member having a radial gap with a width extending in the circumferential direction of the seat means.
- 23. The arrangement of claim 16, wherein said means for relieving pressure has an outlet, said inlet and outlet of said means for relieving pressure being in communication with one another when said pressure in said housing is above said predetermined amount; said arrangement further comprising means for providing communication between said outlet of said means for relieving pressure and said outlet of said housing.
- 24. A valve, comprising:
- a housing defining an interior chamber having an inlet and an outlet, said inlet being generally perpendicular to said outlet, said housing having an opening which is coplanar with said inlet and said outlet and perpendicular to said inlet;
- a valve member provided within said interior chamber, the valve member having first, second and third ports arranged about a surface of the valve member, said valve member having a turning axis and said first, second and third ports including central axes which are generally perpendicular to one another, said first port having a size which is smaller than either of the second and third ports;
- seat means for selectively sealingly receiving a surface of the valve member adjacent the outlet;
- means for selectively moving said valve member within said interior chamber whereby communication between said inlet and outlet may be sequentially closed, opened to a first preselected flow rate and then opened to a second preselected flow rate, said second preselected flow rate being greater than the first preselected flow rate; and
- means for relieving pressure in said housing above a predetermined amount, said means for relieving pressure having an inlet in communication with said opening of said housing, said means for relieving pressure closing said opening of said housing while the pressure in said housing is below said predetermined amount.
- 25. The valve of claim 24, wherein the valve member is generally spherical.
- 26. The valve of claim 24, wherein said second port is always in communication with said inlet and wherein said means for selectively moving said valve member is adapted to sequentially and selectively rotate said valve member to position said third port adjacent said outlet to permit communication between said inlet and said outlet at said second preselected flow rate, then to position said first port adjacent the outlet to permit communication between the inlet and outlet at said first preselected flow rate and then to selectively position said first and third ports away from said outlet to interrupt communication between said inlet and said outlet.
- 27. The valve of claim 26 further comprising means for permitting a pressure within said housing to be sensed.
- 28. The arrangement of claim 24, wherein said means for relieving pressure includes a pressure relief valve which is threadably received within said opening of said housing whereby the valve member may be readily assembled in said valve housing.
- 29. The valve of claim 24, wherein said communication between said inlet and said outlet is closed by selectively moving said valve member to position said first and third ports away from said outlet, said communication between said inlet and outlet being opened to said first preselected flow rate by selectively moving said valve member to position said first port adjacent said outlet, said communication between said inlet and outlet being opened to said second preselected flow rate by selectively moving said valve member to position said third port adjacent the outlet.
- 30. The valve of claim 24, wherein the seat means is comprised of at least one annular member having a radial gap with a width extending in the circumferential direction of the seat means.
- 31. The valve of claim 24, wherein said means for relieving pressure has an outlet, said inlet and outlet of said means for relieving pressure being in communication with one another when said pressure in said housing is above said predetermined amount; said arrangement further comprising means for providing communication between said outlet of said means for relieving pressure and said outlet of said housing.
- 32. An arrangement for testing and draining a fire suppression water sprinkler system, comprising;
- conduit means for supplying water to a plurality of sprinklers;
- means for sensing a flow of water in said conduit means;
- valve means provided downstream of said means for sensing and in communication with said conduit means, said valve means comprising
- a housing defining an interior chamber having an inlet and an outlet, said inlet and outlet being generally perpendicular to one another, said housing having an opening which is coplanar with said inlet and said outlet and perpendicular to said inlet;
- a valve member provided within said interior chamber, the valve member having first, second and third ports arranged about a circumference of said valve member, said first and second ports being generally perpendicular to one another and said second and third ports being generally perpendicular to one another, said first port having a size which is smaller than either of the second and third ports,
- seat means for sealingly receiving a surface of said valve member adjacent the outlet;
- means for selectively moving said valve member within said interior chamber whereby communication between said inlet and outlet may be sequentially closed, open to a first preselected flow rate and then opened to a second preselected flow rate, said second preselected flow rate being greater than said first preselected flow rate; and
- means for relieving pressure in said housing above a predetermined amount, said means for relieving pressure having an inlet in communication with said opening of said housing, said means for relieving pressure closing said opening of said housing while the pressure in said housing is below said predetermined amount.
- 33. The arrangement of claim 32, wherein the valve member is generally spherical.
- 34. The arrangement of claim 33, wherein said means for selectively moving said valve member is adapted to sequentially and selectively rotate said valve member to position one of said second and third ports adjacent said outlet to permit communication between said inlet and outlet at said second preselected flow rate, then to position said first port adjacent the outlet to permit communication between the inlet and the outlet at said first preselected flow rate and then to selectively position said first, second and third ports away from said outlet to interrupt communication between said inlet and said outlet.
- 35. The arrangement of claim 34 further comprising means for permitting a pressure within said housing to be sensed.
- 36. The arrangement of claim 32, wherein said communication between said inlet and outlet is closed by selectively moving said valve member to position said first, second and third ports away from said outlet, said communication between said inlet and outlet being opened to said first preselected flow rate by selectively moving said valve member to position said first port adjacent one of said outlet and said inlet, said communication between said inlet and outlet being opened to said second preselected flow rate by selectively moving said valve member to position said second port adjacent one of said outlet and said inlet and said third port adjacent the other of said outlet and said inlet.
- 37. The arrangement of claim 32, wherein the seat means is comprised of at least one annular member having a radial gap with a width extending in the circumferential direction of the seat means.
- 38. The arrangement of claim 32, wherein said means for relieving pressure has an outlet, said inlet and outlet of said means for relieving pressure being in communication with one another when said pressure in said housing is above said predetermined amount; said arrangement further comprising means for providing communication between said outlet of said means for relieving pressure and said outlet of said housing.
- 39. A valve, comprising:
- a housing defining an interior chamber having an inlet and an outlet, said inlet and said outlet being generally perpendicular to one another, said housing having an opening which is coplanar with said inlet and said outlet and perpendicular to said inlet;
- a valve member provided within said interior chamber, the valve member having first, second and third ports arranged about a circumference of said valve member, said first and second ports being generally perpendicular to one another and said second and third ports being generally perpendicular to one another, said first port having a size which is smaller than either of the second and third ports,
- seat means for sealingly receiving a surface of said valve member adjacent the outlet;
- means for selectively moving said valve member within said interior chamber whereby communication between said inlet and outlet may be sequentially closed, opened to a first preselected flow rate and then opened to a second preselected flow rate, said second preselected flow rate being greater than said first preselected flow rate; and
- means for relieving pressure in said housing above a predetermined amount, said means for relieving pressure having an inlet in communication with said opening of said housing, said means for relieving pressure closing said opening of said housing while the pressure in said housing is below said predetermined amount.
- 40. The valve of claim 39, wherein the valve member is generally spherical.
- 41. The valve of claim 39, wherein said means for selectively moving said valve member is adapted to sequentially and selectively position one of said second and third ports adjacent said outlet to permit communication between said inlet and outlet at said second preselected flow rate, then to position said first port adjacent the outlet to permit communication between the inlet and the outlet at said first preselected flow rate and then to selectively position said first, second and third ports may from said outlet to interrupt communication between said inlet and said outlet.
- 42. The valve of claim 41 further comprising means for permitting a pressure within said housing to be sensed.
- 43. The arrangement of claim 39, wherein said communication between said inlet and outlet is closed by selectively moving said valve member to position said first, second and third ports away from said outlet, said communication between said inlet and outlet being opened to said first preselected flow rate by selectively moving said valve member to position said first port adjacent one of said outlet and said inlet, said communication between said inlet and outlet being opened to said second preselected flow rate by selectively moving said valve member to position said second port adjacent one of said outlet and said inlet and said third port adjacent the other of said outlet and said inlet.
