Claims
- 1. A trocar assembly, comprising:
- a) a cannula assembly including a cannula base having a first coupling, and a hollow cannula extending from said cannula base, said cannula base defining a first fluid passage in fluid communication with said hollow cannula;
- b) a disposable valve assembly having a valve body defining a second fluid passage, a valve in fluid communication with said second fluid passage, and a fluid seal, said valve body including a distal portion and a second coupling configured to removably couple said disposable valve assembly with said first coupling of said cannula assembly to effect a fluid coupling of said first and second fluid passages, said fluid seal surrounding said distal portion of said valve body; and
- c) a trocar insertable through said cannula, said trocar having a proximal handle, wherein,
- said first and second fluid passages and said cannula are dimensioned to permit said trocar to be inserted therethrough,
- said valve is configured to permit said trocar to be inserted through said valve and to automatically seal said second fluid passage when said trocar is removed from said valve.
- 2. A valve assembly for use in a trocar assembly where the trocar assembly includes a cannula assembly having a first coupling and a hollow cannula, and a trocar having a proximal handle and an elongate element with the elongate element extending through the valve assembly and hollow cannula, said valve assembly comprising:
- a valve body defining a fluid passage dimensioned to permit the trocar to extend therethrough, said valve body including a well for receiving said valve and a second coupling including a plurality of ramped teeth;
- a valve cap for covering said well, said valve cap having a central opening dimensioned to receive the trocar and a third coupling including a plurality of radial openings in said valve cap; and
- a valve in fluid communication with said fluid passage, said valve configured to permit the trocar to be inserted through said valve and to automatically close said fluid passage when said trocar is removed from said valve, said valve having a plurality of trocar engaging protrusions which protrude axially from and which are spaced around said valve,
- wherein said valve body includes a valve body coupling configured to couple said valve assembly with the first coupling of the cannula assembly to effect a fluid coupling of said fluid passage with said cannula, and wherein the plurality of ramped teeth mate with and fit inside said plurality of radial openings to hold said valve in place.
- 3. A valve assembly for use in a trocar assembly where the trocar assembly includes a cannula assembly having a first coupling and a hollow cannula, and a trocar having a proximal handle and an elongate element with the elongate element extending through the valve assembly and hollow cannula, said valve assembly comprising:
- a valve body defining a fluid passage dimensioned to permit the trocar to extend therethrough, said valve body including a well for receiving said valve and a second coupling including a plurality of ramped teeth;
- a valve cap for covering said well, said valve cap having a central opening dimensioned to receive the trocar and a third coupling including a plurality of radial openings in said valve cap; and
- a valve in fluid communication with said fluid passage, said valve configured to permit the trocar to be inserted through said valve and to automatically close said fluid passage when said trocar is removed from said valve,
- wherein said valve body includes a valve body coupling for removably coupling said valve assembly with the first coupling of the cannula assembly to effect a fluid coupling of said fluid passage with said cannula, said valve body coupling including an internal thread on the valve body, said internal thread being configured to engage an external thread on the cannula assembly, and wherein the plurality of ramped teeth mate with and fit inside said plurality of radial openings to hold said valve in place.
- 4. A valve assembly for use in a trocar assembly where the trocar assembly includes a cannula assembly having a first coupling and hollow cannula, and a trocar having a proximal handle and an elongate element with the elongate element extending through the valve assembly and hollow cannula, said valve assembly comprising:
- a valve body defining a fluid passage dimensioned to permit the trocar to extend therethrough;
- a valve in fluid communication with said fluid passage, said valve configured to permit the trocar to be inserted through said valve and to automatically close said fluid passage when said trocar is removed from said valve; and
- a valve cap configured to cover the valve,
- wherein said valve body includes a valve body coupling configured to removably couple said valve assembly with the first coupling of the cannula assembly to effect a fluid coupling of said fluid passage with said cannula, said valve body having a plurality of teeth, said valve cap having a plurality of radial openings, the plurality of teeth configured to mate with and fit inside said plurality of radial openings to prevent rotational movement between the valve body and the valve cap and to hold the valve in place.
- 5. A valve assembly according to claim 4, wherein: said plurality of teeth are ramped.
- 6. A valve assembly according to claim 4, wherein:
- said valve body includes a distal portion, and said valve assembly further includes a fluid seal surrounding said distal portion of said valve body.
- 7. A valve assembly according to claim 4, wherein:
- said valve includes a slit valve mounted in said fluid passage within said valve body.
- 8. A valve assembly for use in a trocar assembly where the trocar assembly includes a cannula assembly having a first coupling and a hollow cannula, and a trocar having a proximal handle and an elongate element with the elongate element extending through the valve assembly and hollow cannula, said valve assembly comprising:
- a valve body defining a fluid passage dimensioned to permit the trocar to extend therethrough, said valve body including a distal portion;
- a valve in fluid communication with said fluid passage, said valve configured to permit the trocar to be inserted through said valve and to automatically close said fluid passage when said trocar is removed from said valve, said valve having a plurality of trocar engaging protrusions which protrude axially from and which are spaced around said valve, and
- a fluid seal surrounding said distal portion of said valve body,
- wherein said valve body includes a valve body coupling configured to couple said valve assembly with the first coupling of the cannula assembly to effect a fluid coupling of said fluid passage with said cannula.
- 9. A valve assembly according to claim 8, wherein:
- said valve is a slit valve.
- 10. A valve assembly according to claim 9, wherein:
- said slit valve is a tricuspid valve, and
- said plurality of trocar engaging protrusions includes at least three trocar engaging protrusions.
- 11. A valve assembly according to claim 8, wherein:
- said valve body includes a well for receiving said valve,
- and said valve assembly further includes a valve cap for covering said well, said valve cap having a central opening dimensioned to receive the trocar.
- 12. A valve assembly according to claim 11, wherein:
- said valve body and said valve cap have second and third couplings configured to couple with each other and hold said valve in place.
- 13. A valve assembly for use in a trocar assembly where the trocar assembly includes a cannula assembly having a first coupling and a hollow cannula, and a trocar having a proximal handle and an elongate element with the elongate element extending through the valve assembly and hollow cannula, the first coupling including an external thread, said valve assembly comprising:
- a valve body defining a fluid passage dimensioned to permit the trocar to extend therethrough, said valve body including a distal portion:
- a valve in fluid communication with said fluid passage, said valve configured to permit the trocar to be inserted through said valve and to automatically close said fluid passage when said trocar is removed from said valve; and
- a fluid seal surrounding said distal portion of said valve body,
- wherein said valve body includes a valve body coupling for removably coupling said valve assembly with the first coupling of the cannula assembly to effect a fluid coupling of said fluid passage with said cannula, said valve body coupling including an internal thread on the valve body, said internal thread being configured to engage said external thread on the cannula assembly.
- 14. A valve assembly according to claim 13, wherein:
- said valve includes a slit valve mounted in said fluid passage within said valve body.
- 15. A valve assembly according to claim 13, wherein:
- said valve body includes a well for receiving said valve, and said valve assembly further includes a valve cap for covering said well, said valve cap having a central opening dimensioned to receive the trocar.
- 16. A valve assembly according to claim 15, wherein:
- said valve body and said valve cap have second and third couplings configured to couple with each other and hold said valve in place.
- 17. A valve assembly for use in a trocar assembly where the trocar assembly includes a cannula assembly having a first coupling and a hollow cannula, and a trocar having a proximal handle and an elongate element with the elongate element extending through the valve assembly and hollow cannula, said valve assembly comprising:
- a valve body defining a fluid passage dimensioned to permit the trocar to extend therethrough; and
- a valve in fluid communication with said fluid passage, said valve configured to permit the trocar to be inserted through said valve and to automatically close said fluid passage when said trocar is removed from said valve,
- wherein said valve body includes a valve body coupling configured to removably couple said valve assembly with the first coupling of the cannula assembly to effect a fluid coupling of said fluid passage with said cannula, and said valve body coupling includes a latch mechanism on said valve body which mates with the first coupling of the cannula assembly, said latch mechanism including a resilient tongue having a protrusion extending outward from said resilient tongue.
- 18. A valve assembly according to claim 17, wherein:
- said valve body includes a distal portion, and said valve assembly further includes a fluid seal surrounding said distal portion of said valve body.
- 19. A valve assembly according to claim 17, wherein:
- said valve includes a slit valve mounted in said fluid passage within said valve body.
- 20. A valve assembly according to claim 17, wherein:
- said valve body includes a well for receiving said valve,
- and said valve assembly further includes a valve cap for covering said well, said valve cap having a central opening dimensioned to receive the trocar.
- 21. A valve assembly according to claim 20, wherein:
- said valve body and said valve cap have second and third couplings configured to couple with each other and hold said valve in place.
- 22. A valve assembly according to claim 21, wherein:
- said second coupling includes a plurality of ramped teeth, and
- said third coupling includes a plurality radial openings in said valve cap, wherein said plurality of ramped teeth mate with and fit inside said plurality of radial openings.
- 23. A valve assembly according to claim 7, wherein:
- said resilient tongue comprises a cantilevered cut-out in a wall of said valve body.
- 24. A valve assembly according to claim 23, wherein:
- said resilient tongue further includes a release mechanism extending outward from said resilient tongue, wherein upon squeezing said release mechanism, said protrusion disengages from the first coupling of the cannula assembly.
- 25. A valve assembly for use in a trocar assembly where the trocar assembly includes a cannula assembly having a first coupling and a hollow cannula, and a trocar having a proximal handle and an elongate element with the elongate element extending through the valve assembly and hollow cannula, said valve assembly comprising:
- a valve body defining a fluid passage dimensioned to permit the trocar to extend therethrough; and
- a valve in fluid communication with said fluid passage, said valve configured to permit the trocar to be inserted through said valve and to automatically close said fluid passage when said trocar is removed from said valve,
- wherein said valve body includes a valve body coupling configured to removably couple said valve assembly with the first coupling of the cannula assembly to effect a fluid coupling of said fluid passage with said cannula, and said valve body coupling includes a bayonet locking mechanism on said valve body which mates with the first coupling of the cannula assembly.
- 26. A valve assembly according to claim 25, wherein:
- said bayonet locking mechanism includes a bayonet knob on an external surface of said valve body, and said first coupling includes a bayonet groove.
- 27. A valve assembly according to claim 25, wherein:
- said bayonet locking mechanism includes a bayonet groove on an internal surface of said valve body, and said first coupling includes a bayonet knob.
- 28. A valve assembly according to claim 25, wherein:
- said valve body includes a distal portion, and said valve assembly further includes a fluid seal surrounding said distal portion of said valve body.
- 29. A valve assembly according to claim 25, wherein:
- said valve includes a slit valve mounted in said fluid passage within said valve body.
- 30. A valve assembly according to claim 25, wherein:
- said valve body includes a well for receiving said valve,
- and said valve assembly further includes a valve cap for covering said well, said valve cap having a central opening dimensioned to receive the trocar.
- 31. A valve assembly according to claim 30, wherein:
- said valve body and said valve cap have second and third couplings configured to couple with each other and hold said valve in place.
- 32. A valve assembly according to claim 31, wherein:
- said second coupling includes a plurality of ramped teeth, and
- said third coupling includes a plurality of radial openings in said valve cap, wherein said plurality of ramped teeth mate with and fit inside said plurality of radial openings.
- 33. A valve assembly for use in a trocar assembly where the trocar assembly includes a cannula assembly having first coupling and a hollow cannula, and a trocar having a proximal handle and an elongate element with the elongate element extending through the valve assembly and hollow cannula, the first coupling including a sliding blade latch, said valve assembly comprising:
- a valve body defining a fluid passage dimensioned to permit the trocar to extend therethrough; and
- a valve in fluid communication with said fluid passage, said valve configured to permit the trocar to be inserted through said valve and to automatically close said fluid passage when said trocar is removed from said valve,
- wherein said valve body includes a valve body coupling configured to removably couple said valve assembly with the first coupling of the cannula assembly to effect a fluid coupling of said fluid passage with said cannula, said valve body coupling including a circumferential groove configured to engage said sliding blade latch of said first coupling of the cannula assembly.
- 34. A valve assembly according to claim 33, wherein:
- said valve body includes a distal portion, and said valve assembly further includes a fluid seal surrounding said distal portion of said valve body.
- 35. A valve assembly according to claim 33, wherein:
- said valve includes a slit valve mounted in said fluid passage within said valve body.
- 36. A valve assembly according to claim 33, wherein:
- said valve body includes a well for receiving said valve,
- and said valve assembly further includes a valve cap for covering said well, said valve cap having a central opening dimensioned to receive the trocar.
- 37. A valve assembly according to claim 36, wherein:
- said valve body and said valve cap have second and third couplings configured to couple with each other and hold said valve in place.
- 38. A valve assembly according to claim 37, wherein:
- said second coupling includes a plurality of ramped teeth, and
- said third coupling includes a plurality of radial openings in said valve cap, wherein said plurality of ramped teeth mate with and fit inside said plurality of radial openings.
- 39. A valve assembly for use in a trocar assembly includes a cannula assembly having a first coupling and a hollow cannula, and a trocar having a proximal handle and an elongate element with the elongate element extending through the valve assembly and hollow cannula, said valve assembly comprising:
- a) a valve body defining a fluid passage dimensioned to permit the trocar to extend therethrough, said valve body having a distal portion;
- b) an automatic valve in fluid communication with said fluid passage, said automatic valve configured to permit the trocar to be inserted through said automatic valve and to automatically close said fluid passage when said trocar is removed from said automatic valve; and
- c) a fluid seal surrounding said distal portion of said valve body
- wherein said valve body includes a valve body coupling configured to removably couple said valve assembly with the first coupling of the cannula assembly to effect a fluid coupling of said fluid passage with said cannula.
- 40. A valve assembly according to claim 39, wherein:
- said distal portion of said valve body has a circumferential groove, and said fluid seal includes an O-ring sitting in said circumferential groove.
- 41. A valve assembly according to claim 39, wherein:
- said automatic valve includes a slit valve and an elastic washer mounted in said fluid passage within said valve body.
- 42. A valve assembly according to claim 39, wherein:
- said valve body includes a well for receiving said automatic valve, and said valve assembly further includes a valve cap for covering said well, said valve cap having a central opening dimensioned to receive the trocar.
- 43. A valve assembly according to claim 42, wherein:
- said valve body and said valve cap have second and third couplings configured to couple with each other and hold said automatic valve in place.
- 44. A valve assembly according to claim 43, wherein:
- said second coupling includes a plurality of ramped teeth, and
- said third coupling includes a plurality of radial openings in said valve cap, wherein said plurality of ramped teeth mate with and fit inside said plurality of radial openings.
- 45. A valve assembly according to claim 38, wherein:
- said automatic valve includes a flapper valve and an elastic washer, said elastic washer having an annular opening providing a first contact surface and a circumferential portion which provides a second contact surface, said elastic washer being mounted in said fluid passage within said valve body.
- 46. A valve assembly according to claim 45, wherein:
- said flapper valve comprises a resilient arm member and a contact member coupled to said resilient arm member, wherein, in a first closed position, said resilient arm member is bent to provide a force which pushes said contact member into contact with said second contact surface of said elastic washer.
- 47. A valve assembly according to claim 46, wherein:
- said resilient arm member is made of silicone rubber, and
- said contact member is made of a polymeric material.
- 48. A valve assembly according to claim 45, wherein:
- said flapper valve comprises a spring loaded arm member coupled to a circumferential contact member, said circumferential contact member being in contact with said second contact portion of said elastic washer when said spring loaded arm member is in a first spring loaded position.
